1. Reagan wanted to say he sent a teacher into space for the SOTU |
|
so against the advice of the engineers they lit the rocket on a day when ice was hanging from the shuttle and her tanks. You wouldnt take a drag race car out on a morning like that and go from cold to full out power. I watched it real time on PBS. very sad
I wasnt real surprised when they let discovery try to come down with a hole in her wing.

2. I thought ultimate blame was placed on those defective O-rings... |
|
...from Morton-Thiokol. Unless someone claimed that the ice somehow screwed up those O-rings, that is.

3. As I recall, the O-rings were defective in cold weather. |
|
It was a combination of weather and O-rings that should have worked in any kind of weather, but didn't. I'm functioning on memory here, so if I'm wrong, someone correct me.
I can't remember the name of the guy, but he tried very hard to stop the launch. He knew that the O-rings might malfunction in cold weather.

yes you were correct. I actually sat in on one of the Rogers commission hearings that was taking place at the dept of State. It was very interesting.
I am no expert but the way RR used the media I am sure the push for launch came from the top.
As I recall RR's SOTU was to be that night or the next day.
Hey Ladyhawk are you in NM?

7. Ice is a great indication of COLD. |
|
Do this little test take two rubberbands, place one on the counter and one in the freezer wait 30 minunets and give both a good pull.
You dont need an engineering degree to see the difference in performance.
Prior to challanger, no shuttle was launched on such a cold morning and none since.
