Check out this response to illegal domestic spying: Hold a "spy-in"
Although I moved from NE OH to Rapid City, SD, last summer, I still receive items of interest from friends back in OH. I was just sent this news release via email regarding a "spy-in" that will be held at the federal building in Cleveland by the Northeast Ohio Anti-War Coalition, in response to its discovery that one of their meetings was infiltrated and spied on by the DOD. I had not heard that idea before, and I think it's a wonderful one that has the potential to be powerful and effective. Maybe we should all start thinking of planning one in our own area!

NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release

Clevelanders to Conduct "Spy-In" to Bring Attention to Illegal Domestic Spying

In response to the news that the Pentagon has illegally spied on the Northeastern Ohio Anti-War Coalition (NOAC), Clevelanders will gather outside the Federal Building at 1240 East Ninth Street on Monday, January 30 at 7:30 AM to conduct a spoof "spy-in" on the U.S. government. Participants will dress in Hollywood-inspired spy outfits and pretend to spy on the Federal Building with cameras, binoculars and other gear often associated with espionage activities.

A partial database from the Department of Defense (DOD) obtained in December from last year listed a November, 2004 NOAC planning meeting as an "incident" that the DOD spied on. The meeting focued on plans to send Clevelanders by bus to protest at the Presidential Inauguration in DC and to develop discuss military counter-recruitment activities. The NOAC meeting was one of 43 such incidents contained in a 400-page long document, only eight pages of which were publicly released.

This satirical event, sponsored by NOAC, is intended to highlight the illegality and ludicrousness of the U.S. military spying on various peace and social justice organizations across America that have no history of violence and have made no threats to anyone.

"We're also using this spy-in to inspire Americans to ask their government some vital questions about our democracy", says Sarah Morton, one of the event's coordinators. "For instance, why can't we sit in on the Bush Administration's energy policy planning meeting or listen to their discussions about domestic and foreign policy? After all, they are paid with our tax dollars and are ultimately accountable to us."

"Just as importantly, why aren't the feds investigating their own?", says Tom Pieragastini, co-coordinator of the spy-in. "Instead of spying on peace groups, why aren't they investigating those who lied about going into Iraq, those who are illegally spying on U.S. citizens, or those taking illegal campaign "contributions" from lobbyists? If they want to promote democracy at home and abroad, they should be looking into all the overpriced war contracts, the disappearing millions of tax dollars, and the undone work to repair and rebuild Iraq-not infiltrating domestic groups that are trying to bring about peace and social justice."

In the belief that humor is a powerful form of non-cooperation, NOAC organizers hope this event will help bring about federal accountability as well as some comic relief.

Sounds like a fantastic idea to me, and one that will take courage to implement in the current political climate. We should consider conducting "spy-ins" in our own areas.

6. That's what I think would really
be an effective and powerful message, if groups all over the country started planning and implementing spy-ins!

20. Oh! I would SO do this!
Sounds like a fun afternoon!

Sometime in the spring...

Get, say...10-30 people together in 'spy' overcoats and hats. They could slink about the building with the cameras and binoculars... maybe even toy listening devices.

And everyone would each occasionally sidle up to a passer-by;

"Psst! here... take this and make sure it gets to a safe place... I think they're following me...", and hand them a pamphlet with the words "You are being Watched(secrets inside...)" right on the front fold and then slink away looking over their shoulder.
When they open it up they will find concise and creepy information about what the government is up to.

I think this would be a great way to pique interest and get the message out.

22. Hey, now that's a
really neat and creative twist; I think it would really work, too. It would really make the whole issue real to people instead of it just being an abstract concept right now.

...listed a November, 2004 NOAC planning meeting as an "incident" that the DOD spied on. The meeting focued on plans to send Clevelanders by bus to protest at the Presidential Inauguration in DC and to develop discuss military counter-recruitment activities.

Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

...and here's another...

Amendment IV
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

4. Their total disregard for the law is
indeed frightening, isn't it? And I think it would be safe to assume that if they'd been planning to protest Clinton's inauguration, they would not have had to worry about being spied on.

3. Why not have a "Spy-in" on private Republican appologists?
For example, that UCLA Alumni guy who wanted to pay students to tape record liberal professors?

Or large GOP donors?

Or Bill O'Reilly?

5. Now we're getting somewhere,
that would certainly be an interesting twist! How would that be done? I'm sure there's a way to plan such "activities."

7. Well, you could park outside their home holding a big parabolic dish
You'd have to be open and obvious about it.

The idea isn't necessarily to actually spy on them, but to call attention to spying.

You could also play a tape recording of "convesations" that may or may not be taking place inside the target house.

8. This would indeed be the goal:
"The idea isn't necessarily to actually spy in them, but to call attention to spying."

One of the great things about this spy-in idea is that it would bring home to people, in a concrete yet humorous way, just how intrusive, dangerous and illegal such domestic spying really is and that it can happen to anyone for whatever reason the government feels like coming up with. THAT is what we need to get through to people, that this can easily be them even if they've done nothing wrong or illegal.

The fact that the government, in its recent request for search engine records, wasn't just focusing on a particular group or person and subject, but wanted MILLIONS of RANDOM search records, ought to have really made that clear to people.

23. 'whattsamattta? if if ya got nothing to hide? Why worry about spying?"
If they have nothing to hide, they should be very happy about spooks with overcoats, and parabolic mikes, pointing spottting scopes at their homes.

At least thats the conventional wisdom I've heard served up.

they wouldn't be all that thrilled with it even if they DIDN'T have something to hide. Guess privacy is good enough for them, but to hell with us peasants!

This is the most secretive administration in American history, yet it demands the shredding of its citizens' privacy in every area you can think of.

Edited on Sat Jan-28-06 01:24 PM by IanDB1
Thank you for taking a stand against government invasions of our privacy.

The Human Rights investigation for your actions in China are nothing more than government retaliation and strong-arm tactics for your refusal to bow to the Bush Administration's demands.

May I suggest that Google publish all web searches originating from The White House? Especially during the week of August 29, 2005, and during the week of September 11, 2001.

I think I'll send a similar letter and hopefully enough people here will do the same. They must be under tremendous pressure from the government, and we should express our appreciation for their standing firm.

Whether we all coordinate for one day, or just spread the idea and watch it take.

I already know I'm going to try and put one of these together... it just sounds like too much fun.

28. On Boston Legal there was a spy-in by an attorney in a case in
Edited on Sun Jan-29-06 11:34 AM by Humor_In_Cuneiform
which an HMO had left information about a woman in a shelter for battered women on the internet.

Her husband located her there and killed her. Her daughter sued the HMO for not keeping the info protected.

The attorney played by James Spader went into court having done his research and started asking the witness for the HMO about all kinds of personal aspects of his life, leaving him dumbfounded.

He kept going and going with details of the guy's life.

It was fantastic, a great way to make a point!!
