I Just Read that Public Schools Actually Score Higher Than Private Schools
Edited on Sat Jan-28-06 12:51 PM by stepnw1f
Well, well, well, even I, a public school advocate, am gleefully surprised. I guess I fell into the MSM trap....

What i believe the Right wants to do is get rid of Public Education altogether for tax purposes and information control. By having a privatized system, millions of poor people will never get an education. That's guaranteed. What will also happen, is standards or regulations on schools will be non-existent. We'll have cults teaching their own versions of truth to the public with a substandard education on sciences and math. This is the uber-wealthy wet dream... a stupid controllable society that never gets the tools they need to compete with them.

Great article!

4. Private schools getting a bad rap
The conservative right has pushed Private Schools into a situation where they need to defend themselves. Most people who work and contribute to them are well meaning people

10. No one is arguing that they are not
The argument is do public schools perform better? This latest study says, as a rule, yes they do.

6. Ummmmmmmmm
I am not pro-private not anti-public schools. But having attended both I find it hard to belive the public system students would score better, on average. There may be instances where a public school exceeds a private one, but on the whole, I find this difficult to accept.........

8. One explanation
A lot of "private" schools are medicore "faith based schools."

Some public schools - especially in the "fancy suburbs" are very good.

13. And that's the point...
Private schools can, to some degree, cherry pick their students. So it's to be expected that private school students would score better on the tests, because you're not comparing the same population of students. If this is the report that I read recently, this study tries to control for that variable, and tries to determine how identical students would fare in each type of school.

7. Now, there is the possibility that the tests are flawed.
So low test scores do not reflect understanding, only inculcation in the culture and practices of standardized tests. I've participated in analysis of Texas's pre NCLB test and have examined Ohio's writing and math tests. They seem to be good measures of particular conventions and, like the GOP, not open to diverse human experience and interpretation. Now, when there's a particular item where 70% of the kids choose the same wrong answer, you have a question: are the kids all wrong or was the question misleading, sloppy, or maybe just dumb?

That said, it should be exxmained whether private schools are serving their students.

11. This is the NAEP
It's a good test and the one that the feds use to assess education as a whole in the country.
