Arctic experiencing summer temperatures

It may still be January, but the Arctic region is reportedly experiencing record, summerlike temperatures.

Norway's Meteorological Institute said the ice line at Svalbard, a northern Norwegian territory, is extremely far north for the season, Aftenposten reported Thursday. The waters around Svalbard are nearly free of ice and there are large areas of open sea up to near 84 degrees north.

The average temperature on Svalbard so far this month has been 29 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about 24 degrees higher than normal, Aftenposten reported.

Meteorologists said a record high 49 degrees Fahrenheit was recorded Wednesday evening on the Arctic island of Jan Mayen.

1. fairbanks AKa -49 yesterday, North Dakota 10th warmest on record
so far, this winter is nearing the top ten list for warmest winters in Fargo.

meanwhile, fairbanks alaska is about average, temps minus 30 to minus 50 this week.

the polar jet stream has not dipped south so far this winter. it may yet do so, however,
and the upper midwest will lose its january "spring" over night.

Same thing happening in eurpoe. Their polar jet moves north allowing the warmth in Norway, and dips south over russian, pushing cold air over russia and westward into europe.

2. Here is an interesting note on warmer conditions in East Tennessee
Edited on Sat Jan-28-06 12:56 PM by fasttense
Today it is suppose to be up in the 60s. This is January, for god's sake, it is not suppose to be in the 60s. January and February here are some of the coldest months of the year, yet it is 60 degrees.

But what is interesting is that I just got back from taking my dog to the vet and the Doctor told me that fleas are still out there. Fleas in January? Usually by now they are all dead. I don't like tropical climates because of the explosive insect infestation. I picked East TN because it got cold enough to kill the bugs but not so cold that you got months of snow, and because it was beautiful. Sigh...I may have to move further up the mountains, or further north.
