This morning a woman and her daughter came to our door
wanting "to talk to me about the Bible" I said I wasn't interested and they left. Later as my wife and I were driving to the store I saw them getting into a big black HUMMER!!!

It was all I could do not to stop and talk to them about Hummers and how fucking religious and caring driving one is.

I wonder if this was some sort of a scam (beyond the scam of door-to-door religion)?

1. Do the fundies still go door-to-door.
I used to like messing with them and calling into question the accuracy (or inaccuracy, as it were) of the bible and watch their little heads spin.

9. Ever read Oberon Zell's tale of fundies dropping by?
Members of his family came through the room in their birthday suits, as was common. Guess it was pretty amusing.

Havocdad tells them he was just about to clean the guns then suggests they guy next door would probably enjoy a visit with them, knowing our neighbor likes to run around in the buff.

They don't come by anymore...

15. Hilarious.
Gus Van Sant did a movie about Kurt Cobain where two Mormon boys drop by the house. It's priceless.

20. Rarely our church
will go and leave little flyers attached to the mailbox. I like that better because you can always throw it away instead of bothering someone. At least they didn't bug the hell out of you. I do give them that.

In the newest version of Christianity, greed and polluting the atmosphere are no longer sins, but virtues.

5. They were probably Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormons
though usually the ones that call at our door are men. They have stopped coming by as often, maybe because of the bumper sticker in Arabic on our window (which says "In the Name of God, Who is Mercy and Compassion" translated).

8. It was probably JWs, as they use children
in their door-to-door campaigning. They figure you won't shut the door on a child. Several years ago, they were stopping at a neighbor's house, ALWAYS the day after the Social Security checks arrived. Sure enuf, they would come out the front door, waving a check at those still in the car. I called one of the children and got that stopped. They never did come back to do any of their preaching or spreading of the Word. Gee, you'd think their only concern was that monthly check. Hmmmm!

21. Right
I believe when my church did door-to-door campaigning they only did flyers and I believe just adults and teens went if they wanted. I didn't go so I don't know for sure of course. But we rarely do that though.

6. In all my years, I have noticed door to door preaching types
Edited on Sat Jan-28-06 01:24 PM by havocmom
usually arrive in very nice vehicles. You cannot imagine my glee when at 13, I was told by my mom to "be as forceful or even rude as necessary to turn them away from our house" when they would come to prey on my grandfather and his pensions. They would leave with his money too often and their 'gift' to him? Nothing but dismal preaching about how horrible life was and how evil we all were. The man was dealing with ill health and loneliness, having outlived all his contemporaries. Their visits would leave him depressed and difficult. Also noticed his coughing and shortness of breath worse for two days EVERY TIME they dropped by.

When they started coming during hours I was in school, Mom and I figured their schedule and one of stayed home from time to time when they were expected. My grandfather's outlook and strength improved when they and their mercedes stopped coming.

Over the years, I always paid attention to the car folks arrived in when they toted a bible in one hand and put the other out for a donation. Big new car? You sure as hell don't need money from my meager budget! With limited resources, I pick my charities carefully.

11. I love it when they come to my door.
I keep a t-shirt with the Statue of Liberty holding a coat hanger by the door with a book I found in a thrift shop, "The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology". I show them my book and say "OK, lets debate." They for some reason decline my invitation and leave abruptly.

12. You don't understand the new christianity...
See.. in order to avoid any criticism of the mega preachers who want to drive hummers and take expensive trips, they now preach that God WANTS them to all be RICH! Seriously.. they have seminars and videos all about getting rich, because God said they should have riches. It's really sick.. they now have Christian financial advisors, investment programs, etc. I guess some people are stupid enuff not to notice that born again christianity is not only a fad but a BIG biz. Those people don't give a fuck about polluting the Earth.. they actually believe that the extinction of man is a good thing, cuz Jesus will come back and take them all out for ice cream or something.

I believe I have heard that if you're doing God's work they believe they'll get rich. That goes against everything Jesus is about. Do you know the story of the rich young ruler?

26. Prosperity Theology
It's a cancer spreading through the church, and most of the faithful have been hoodwinked into thinking it's for real. Disgusting. I always counter that and ask just how much money Jesus, the beloved Son of God had or any of the apostles and early Church leaders. They usually leave me alone.

Though I recall the ones who used to come arrived in a large black SUV.

I don't think they were mentally equipped for a real philosophical debate.

I haven't seen them in years though. Maybe it's because I told them that if my son-in-law saw them trespassing on his property, he would shoot them.

19. I had a woman
and her young son at the door in December. When I opened the door she said, "Do you know what is wrong with the world today?" She had pamphlets in hand. I said yes, people like you. Then asked why she felt the need to drag her young child with her. I shut the door.

I have no tolerance for these presumptuous brainwashed individuals.

27. It's bad.
See, that form of missionary work literally has the lowest success rate of any of them. (I went to an evangelical college and have done mission work, so that's how I know--there've been studies within the churches.) The only reason they do it is that they think they have to, since St. Paul said it's a good idea (in an age with no mass communication technology).

You know what I do? I take their flyer, assure them I am a Christian and a waste of their time, and then I call their pastor and ream him out instead. At least I won't get anyone else from that church.

If it's Mormons, I give them books on Church history or try to get them to take an icon. ;)

30. Recite these Bible verses to Hummer-driving door-to-door evangelists
and watch them sputter. Ask them to explain the Hummer in light of Jesus' words...

Matthew 19:20 - 24
The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come follow me.
But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.
And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Mark 10:20 - 23
And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.
Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.
And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

34. When we evacuated for a hurricane, we turned our chickens loose, in case
their coop should get damaged. They came through it fine. However, they roosted on the front porch, leaving some poop. Some fundies came by the next few days and talked to my husband about Jesus. He said "I smell sh1t! Is that sh1t? Oh, yes, over there. Yes, it is..." They left promptly. Try it. It works.

especially the one from this past November when the gay marriage ban was passed. One of my neighbors asked why I had the sign up & I told them. They asked if they could have a sign, so I asked how they voted on the ban. Too bad for them...they voted for it, so no sign.
