A children's book for young Democrats
Edited on Sun Jan-29-06 12:48 AM by Lorien
Remember the mean spirited "mommy, there are Democrats under my bed!"? Well, a former classmate of mine has published a book for children with a far more positive message and tone: http://littledemocrats.net/index.html
(I only wish I had known earlier, so I could have offered my illustration services)!

1. Very cool idea!
But the squirrels w/bowling-pin-shaped ears . . .

(Maybe you can work on the second edition.)

:D

3. I know. Here's one of my anthropomorphic animals:
(still- some may prefer colored pencil squirrels...)

It is a cool idea-and a real breath of fresh air after some of the nasty excuses for children's lit that repugs have put out there.

10. She's a meerkat
Here's one of her with an elephant (not a republican elephant, of course). These are illustrations from a book of mine that a publisher keeps saying they want to print, but they won't give me a timeline. *sigh* Maybe self publishing is the only route these days.

14. You are seriously exceptionally good.
If the publisher doesnt do it go for another until
you find the right one. Do you have an agent? What
is the medium, pastels?

15. Thanks! It's acrylic. I don't have an agent

(though I've been looking for a reputable one). Right now the book is with Scholastic, which is the world's largest children's book publisher (they publish the Harry Potter books), so I keep trying to be patient. It's very hard to make any kind of money on picture books-the Dr. Seuss' and Eric Carles of the world are very rare indeed, which is why I've stuck with Disney for most of my career.Drawing for the mouse is hardly soul satisfying, but it pays the bills. hopefully I can find a decent agent one of these days who can help make illustrating for children's books at least a little profitable.

2. OH MY GOD THANK YOU
when I heard about that other disgusting book I thought we need one for our kids - I have three nephews who have a grandfather who is the republican mayor of a town in upstate NY - I am forever telling him that his grandchildren will vote republican over my dead body - lol - this book should be a great hit with the kids and a way for me to stick it to their grandfather!!!!! In a very kind way of course.

I've been working on the 11 year old since he was 3 and other than his grandfather there is not a repunk he will ever vote for - and the seven year old during the 2004 election announced he was voting for Kerry because George Bush is a very bad man - don't i do good work - lol

4. Good work indeed!
:toast:

I hope the rest are young enough to enjoy this one. I went to elementary school with Jeremy (about the most liberal private school imaginable-even had class in the woods and sang "kumbya"). He was a very sweet kid from a family of intellectuals/ academics. For some reason he always reminded me of Charlie Brown, lol! I'm sure the book is as warm and gentle as I remember him to be.

5. Just ordered one.
I have mixed feelings as I don't want to be heavy-handed or 'brainwash', but looking through the sample pages, it's very cute and seems to have a light touch.

8. Yes, unlike the "why liberals are scary" books for kids by repugs
this one simply states what good qualities Democrats have, while the scenes in the background show the republican take on those ideas.

9. What a neat book . . .
. . . and i wish my niece was still young enough to be able to read it to her.

But she's fourteen, an aspiring veteranarian, and a fightin' lil' Dem from Kansas!
