* has dodged a big bullet, it's been a very mild winter here |
|
I've heard horror stories about run ups in heating costs, but all in all it has been very mild here, not at all like January could be. Winter is not over yet, but with each passing day we're leaving the worst part behind us. What we can attribute this to I don't know, it could have something to do with global warming, I don't know, but, if the trend continues it's going to be a bear this summer. Heat kills more people than cold, remember that heat wave during the nineties that killed 500 people in Chicago alone? We could be looking at another one of those. Plus the hurricane season will be just as bad or worse this year, for now though this liar* has dodged a big bullet.

4. Not yet he hasn't, even with the mild winter |
|
heating costs have risen 100% to 150% in some areas of the country. Eletric bills have risen a modest 30% to 50% in the same areas. Add to that the rise in gas prices and food costs you'll see a much bleaker picture then the MSM are showing. Then take into account the new medi care health prescription plan and you will really see how bad things are. Your just hearing the hype from the 30% base that backs shrub. People are hurting all over the rust belt and it will only get worse by spring.

7. I'm just saying it could've been worse |

If we had had our normal winter here the temps would have plunged below zero and stayed there for at least a week, they haven't. There would have been many inches of snow on the ground, so far we've only seen about ten inches total. Things have a way of catching up, call it karma or whatever sooner or later the chickens will be coming home to roost. If we were freezing on top of the drug fiasco, if people had been shut off, or got heating bills in the hundreds or thousands even, there would have been a mob outside of the wh with torches and pitchforks. I believe the lying cocksucker got a reprieve.

10. Hey we still got Feb and March to get through and March is a mad |
|
weather month with all kinds of nastiness. Not to mention april with its unpredictable weather. I remember taking a cycle ride one early april, was 70's when i left that morning, the temp dropped down to under 30 and we got hit by an white out. That was the longest 50 mile ride of my life. It stayed below freezing for a week.

8. Worse yes but "dodged the bullet"? I'm not so sure... |
|
Heating costs are still so high many, at least here in northern NY, are being forced to choose between food and heat. Needless to say this has many up here VERY upset with Bush since they see the increasing oil and gas prices as his responsibilty (and fault for not doing more to help). Last month we paid $2.29 gal for home heating oil... this month it's $2.39 gal... last year around this time when we first bought this house it was about $1.75 per gal.
Many folks are just a bit over income wise to qualify for HEAP assistance. Those people are setting their thermostats as low as they dare, keeping faucets on at a trickle so the pipes don't freeze and hoping/praying that the weather stays relatively "warm". We had a couple of sub-zero weeks in December but we'hit 50F once this month and in the mid to high 30's is the norm... it's been "warm" enough that the St. Lawrence River has not frozen. Only tucked away in the little inlets will you see an ice fishing hut or two... not nearly as many as normal for up here. We also are very low on the snow which as many northerners know actually helps insulate a bit. This is also hurting the economy up here is another way... ice fishing and snowmobiling are big business up here and that's currently cut back quite a bit.
Even with all this "warmer" weather (whether courtesy of globla warming, Mother Nature or both) Gov. Pataki has had to step in with more HEAP assistance funds because even with it being "mild" NY was about to run out of money for the program even though it normally lasts into March.
Anyway... I'm not sure Bush has totally dodged this bullet quite yet... we still have February, which is almost as bad as January up here, as well as March and usually into April/May a bit that we'll need heat at least off and on... if he does dodge it though... it will be courtesy of Mother Nature's PMS... not anything Bush or the Republicans have done that's for sure... greedy uncaring bastards. :grr:

11. It's been weirdly mild in Minnesota as well. |
|
We haven't gone below zero even once (not even at night) in January. The last few weeks the temps have been in the high 20s or low 30s. We even got well into the 40s this last week. I live in an apartment so I don't have a heating bill but I'm sure this weather has been a relief for many.

I long for "seasonable" weather. Listening to the weather bunnies joke about how "nice" all this weird weather is.. and about "getting in a couple of rounds".. is CREEPING ME OUT.

I've managed to go through the winter with no furnace. Fortunate for me, but I worry what the long term meaning will be, environmentally speaking.
