How many DWI deaths were there?
http://www.jointogether.org/sa/news/summaries/reader/0,1854,553295,00.html

How about cancer deaths in NY or in the US?
http://www.cancer.org/downloads/STT/F&F2001.pdf

How about Aids, Heart disease, not to mention world hunger and genocide.

No disrespect to those who have died and those left behind. But wouldn't we get a little more bang for the buck with a look at the big picture?

2. It's not about facts, it's about fear.
People STILL ask me if it's safe to fly.

I tell them that 9/11 was a safe day to fly. We had over 4500 planes in the air and lost four. That's a lot more than we usually lose, but those are still damn good odds. They don't want to look at things logically, they want to be scared.

I do agree with your point, though.

4. How many dead Iraqi Civilians?????
Pales in comparison to those of 9/11. I say that as someone who knew a few who died that day.

WE have blood on our hands. A LOT OF IT.

10. Iraqi citizens don't count . . . they're brown . . .
and not Americans . . . they don't say the Pledge of Allegience, sing the Star Spangled Banner, or paste "Support Our Troops" ribbons on their rear bumpers . . . hell, most of 'em don't even HAVE rear bumpers! . . . so why should we care even enough to keep track of the numbers? . . . since they don't count, I mean . . .

:sarcasm:
obviously, I hope . . .

5. What I'm wondering
What happens when *asshat's illegal war has killed more Americans than 9/11? Will anyone even notice?

9. I wonder. How do we stomach that? Is the easy oil really worth it?
We kill as many voluntarily for oil as they do for their religion?

12. That oil didn't turn out to be so easy, did it?
But Halliburton sure got rich, didn't it?

13. "Oops. My bad. Too late now. Can't give up what so many have paid
for with their lives...."

makes me sick.

Let's start a draft. Now. Overturn Roe v wade. Cut all payments from the government. De regulate everything.

Until it really hurts, the morons will not get it.

6. I opposed invasions ... but it wasn't about body counts
Downtown Manhattan still hasn't recovered from the impacts - and it's useful to keep in mind the psychological impact the attacks had on the media elite here and in DC.

I come from an emotionally healthy place, but am glad I wasn't living alone on 9/11 ... when the boy I married came home that night, after waiting patiently in a bar for the subways to start running again, we had a good cry together. I was also relieved to hear from my brother who worked just two blocks from "Ground Zero"; he was just tired from walking back to Brooklyn.

I think we're beginning to recover our sanity - but comparing what happened that day to DWI fatalities or cancer statistics misses the big picture.

I remember corresponding with a well-know liberal columnist while the Taliban were offering to surrender Bin Laden ... all he wanted to do was invade Afghanistan. I've been holding my tongue since, but now may be a good time to bring those traumatized victims back to reality.

7. They say about 18,000 people die each year in Amurka due to
no access to healthcare.... but then those are probably the undesirables.... how sad is that? The richest nation in the world and almost one sixth of the population does not have healthcare.... what a shining light we hold up for the uncivilized world.

11. It's the Whiz-Bang factor.
Planes crashing into buildings and people jumping to their deaths was material tailor-made for the ghoulish electronic "news" media. I mean, it was just like a Hollywood disaster movie, except some of the lighting wasn't just right in some of the shots. Oh well. At least they can use it, over and over and over (never mind that the REAL TRUTH about how it all came about hasn't been clearly established nor will ever be), to justify the inexorable shift back toward fascism and slavery.

14. As tragic as 9/11, in the grand scheme of things it was not an earth
shattering event. Much worse things have happened to this country.
