She recalled her own first glimpse of the Marlboro Man -- an image seen through tears of relief that he was alive, and misery at how worn he looked.

"Some people thought it was sexy, and we thought, 'Oh, my God, he's in the middle of a war, close to death.' We just couldn't understand how some people could look at it like that," she said. "But I guess for some people it was glory, like patriotism."

12. Known fact. But I smoke and I know the cigarettes will kill
me eventually. All of us will die of something some day. Heart disease, cancer, etc. But at least I will die happy with my habit.

3. I like this guy...
Miller himself seems torn -- proud of the troops fighting for freedom, but wondering whether there was a peaceful way, to find terrorists in Iraq without invading.

There was no time for such questions in Fallujah. But now, at night, when he can't sleep, Miller thinks of the men he saw through his rifle scope, and wonders: Were they terrorists fighting against America? Or men fighting to protect their homes?

"I mean, how would we feel if they came over and started something here?" he asked. "I'm glad that I fought for my country. But looking back on it, I wouldn't do it all over again."

War is not "Oak Ridge Boys" song. Some of the best writing I have ever read.

Welcome home Mr. Miller, I hope you find peace.

5. That Pic is a PhotoShop Fake
no f-ing way that cigarrette was in the orignal shot. It was clearly added later...look how difused the smoke is...cigarette smoke eminates from a steady point on the burning end of the cig...the smoke looks like a video game effect...no burning ember visible at the cig's tip..the size and angle of the cig looks funny...the cig is utterly clean/white..the end of the cig, which should be a glowing ember, looks like it was hand-drawn to look like it was burning..

his mother on the CBS Evening News last year when the photo first came out and I remember her talking about wishing he didn't smoke.

9. Smoke is coming from his mouth not the cig.
Which means he's exhaling. Were he inhaling, the tip would glow red.

6. What did anybody expect?
I expect a huge influx of soldiers returning with PTSD. They'll be under-treated just like the Vietnam vets. They'll have to pull teeth to get benefits. Most of them will be able to function in society, even with their demons-- some of them, like my daughter's soldier buddy she was deployed with in Afghanistan, will commit murder.(He killed his girlfriend, in the words of my daughter, "he came back fucked up")

When my daughter was still deployed, one of my patients' father was a Vietnam vet,and we talked. He come back two weeks later to bring me a book called "Nam Vet" He insisted I give it to my daughter, no matter how much combat she had or had not seen, or the particular number of deaths of buddies she had dealt with. (More than I expected, the soldiers get to carry the coffins at the memorials) Or the fact she was in Afghanistan, and not Iraq

The book is by a man named Chuck Dean. It ended up with a Christian angle, but even as a non-Christan, it hit all the bases as far as PTSD is concerned I felt. I gave it to her, but I don't know if she read it.

I do know she came back changed.
