Cleveland police brutalize woman for putting up "Bush Step Down" posters
On the World Can't Wait web site there is this disturbing account of a Cleveland woman who was brutalized and arrested by Cleveland police for putting up anti-Bush posters:

"...One of the cops says to me, "Shut up or I will kill you!", "I am sick of this anti-Bush shit!" "You are definitely going to the psyche ward." Then somebody calls the EMS, and a fire squad shows up. The cop superviser appears and puts his finger in my face: "I dont like it when people treat my men like this and if you don't obey the law you will suffer the consequences." ..."

A family of police and they are all Democrats. Interesting indeed.
Though I to am from the Northeast and I must say that our police are not known for their overly aggressive (abusive) behavior as they are in other parts of the country.

69. UNIONs! Government workers NEED unions. To bad they also vote RW
because they want the FEAR that the pugs promote...to further the private war profiteers, the prision industrial complex, and the oppression necessary for the cops to have a free hand.
Justice and civil liberties are the opponents of brutality by those in power, like cops and U.S. miltary and the Fascists in the WH and the congress. Individuals are not protected on the street w/o legal battles, and individual citizens are not protected from the abuses of power w/o lawyers.
That's why JFK said, "When we make peaceful revolution impossible, we make violent revolution inevitable."

73. Kill, instead of just firing from gov & defense plant jobs u mean? Careers
are being ruined as we ignore the war crimes and the Fascist attacks upon our civil liberties.
Ever notice the cameras the cops wield at protests. I have seen the cops go into two protests, five strong, to intimidate while cameras positioned above the crowds roll. THis is Fascist America, in full bloom. During the McCarthy era hundreds lost careers and jobs and were even jailed, for demonstrating peacefully. Same thing happened in the Nixon era. Same thing is happening now, can some people think the Nixon Dirty Tricks and 1st Amendment violations stopped?!

8. In general, I don't trust police as far as I can throw an officer.
There have to be citizen oversight boards on these police forces. The last thing we need is a police force goose-stepping to the beat of Bush and his financiers. The police forces can provide a benefit, but at the same time, the fact that police brutality, corruption, and abuse of power is an ever-present issue, especially with respect to inner-city areas, requires us to be ever-vigilant with respect to police authority.

Everyone just get a gun and protect yourself.

Seriously, I do not believe that the police should be allowed to unionize. They have enough power as it is, too much power.

....and of course, it's the firemen who came to the poor woman's help. We can always count on them to help us. That's why so many people admire them. When they go into the "line of fire", they don't get a gun or the law to protect them.

This needs media attention.

53. I've known some lazy freaking firemen in my time
Granted the inner city firemen do a hard job, but some of suburbian firemen I have had the displeasure of meeting were some of the most lazy piles of ego I've ever seen. Post 9-11 some of them really played up the "We're all hero's" crap to the hilt...

Some cops really do earn their money too. They see the worst of the world and have one of the most depressing jobs in the world. As a result they have a high suicide rate.

For every cop who hides behind the badge and flaunts his ego with a nightstick there's another who we can be sure is truly there to "serve and protect." The problem is that they tend to stick up for each other regardless of how lousy a cop really is...

Claiming that all cops are gestapo thugs like these dipshits and all firemen are heros is just silly.

I'm not saying it isn't true, and God knows I know OH well enough to know that such a thing wouldn't be at all out of character for it, and especially that particular area of OH, but I think we need to really verify the truth of this story before we go apeshit. We can't just automatically accept stories like this as true without doing any verification.

42. Cleveland cops are notoriously rotten
Many are corrupt or incompetent and they have a record for lying and being racist. Kind of surprising in a city run by Dems, but they have a very strong union and basically ignore the Dem mayor and Dem city council.

I recall being a volunteer driver in a motorcade once when Al Gore was in town. The SS had all the vehicles lined up outside the hotel as they were being inspected prior to leaving. A stupid Clevleand cop came over and started yelling and screaming at the drivers, telling us to break up the motorcade. We looked at him like he was crazy (which he had to be), the SS calmed him down. What an idiot.

before i had the experience of crazy-ass cop brutality, i wouldn't have believed it was possible. it really opened my eyes.

the fact is, when it's just 'you' and a couple of a 'cops' anything can happen. if they've had a fight with their family or are hungover, and you offend them in some way, crazy shit can happen. as soon as you are 'in the system' and for as long as you are 'in the system' you are screwed. no one will question the cops.

this doesn't surprise me, especially given that it's Cleveland, Ohio.

55. I worked as a paramedic for four years
and I cant tell you the amount of calls I went on, whether it was at the police station or at a residence, where the patient was under arrest and beaten up/maced...and according to the cops they always had fallen down the stairs. Usually the patient was too scared to disagree with the cops around them, but there were a few instances where I got them alone and found out the truth.

I never reported anything, and sometimes I feel bad about it now that I am away from the job, but at the time, I had to work with these cops a lot and didn't want to make enemies.

The police are a necessary evil IMO, but I think they should screen these guys even harder than they already do. We do not any more Tackleberrys running around with a badge a gun, believe me.

56. Don't take this too seriously until there's corroboration in other media.
Revolution Books isn't exactly reputable. OTOH, Cleveland Heights cops ARE giant pieces of shit, and have been for about ever, so I'm not saying this isn't true, just consider the source before you jump all over this and rend your garments.

57. I called last night to find out what we could do to help Carol.
And I received a very nice message back.

World Cant Wait and Carol are probably going to file suit, but here is the joke of all jokes. The Fascist Ohio police who assaulted and abused Carol, are actually planning to charge her with 2 counts of felony (grand?) and assault. I mean you know how fearful they must have been with a 53 year old woman putting up World Can't Wait posters.

I just called the Cleveland Height City Hall and left a message with the Chief Secretary, asking how this is going to be handled and what penalties will these police face who have assaulted a totally defenseless woman who became surrounded by four cops.

The Ohio Police need to hear from us as well. That this is abuse and these policemen belong behind bars for what they have done to Carol. She was trying to put up posters and they assaulted her.

Call the Cleveland Heights Police at 216-291-3883

Call Cleveland Heights City Hall at 216-291-4444

"...One of the cops says to me, "Shut up or I will kill you!", "I am sick of this anti-Bush shit!" "You are definitely going to the psyche ward." Then somebody calls the EMS, and a fire squad shows up. The cop superviser appears and puts his finger in my face: "I dont like it when people treat my men like this and if you don't obey the law you will suffer the consequences." ..."

what is the world is going on in Ohio...the storm troppers are in charge

76. I have to agree...
Given my nigh-obsessive love of the Fourth Amendment, I tend to take a pretty dim view of the authorities in most cases. And I've seen firsthand what police can and will do to protestors -- the FTAA protest in Miami in Nov. 2003 springs immediately to mind -- but I'd really like to see some account of this other than that of the principle participants.

79. Clev Hts police won't talk until after Chief returns 3pm. Hospital name?
this is looking like a world can't wait oversight? IF the hospital were quoted, or an attourney made a public statement, or a police report were made available the legitimacy would be stronger.

in abuse towards citizens and/or protestors?

Why don't you call Carol and ask her yourself? The number is there.

85. You don't really hate cops, maybe you hate many things you've seen them do?
Hating is bad for the soul, and I have had some bad experiences...lying and worse, but some of my experiences with police have redeemed my view of even the bad one's I've personally experienced. Power can ruin those with badges, but stronger cops can do good things.

93. It has nothing to do with hating cops, it is about stopping ABUSE.
Blaming the victim is always easier than looking at the reality of what the victim endured.

There were witnesses, and if they aren't threatened and/or intimidated, they will be able to say what they saw.

There would be no reason for this woman to lie that I can see. However there would be incentive for those who caused her harm.

Edited on Mon Jan-30-06 04:33 PM by slaveplanet
The city council and mayor try to play Dem on TV

and the Police ... the only thing the police are liberal with are their use of lies and excuses.

They recently murdered an unarmed suspect teenager while he was in bed, SLEEPING(claim his parents)...his parents let the cops in , they had a warrant.

Lots of gunfire against unarmed suspects last year has caused somewhat of a PR nightmare for the incoming and outgoing mayors...

96. Last night, in San Bernardino (SoCal), video of a Sherruf Depity shooting
an unarmed, prone under point of sherrif's pistol, "suspect" from a traffic incident.
The "suspect" was an Iraq Vet, who survived THREE shots to chest and limbs. The VIDEO from a guy, was sold to KTTV for $5000 and was complete with audio on the Channel 5 news, then all other channels. WHAT A WIERD SHOOTING, very bad out of policy shooting, from my several viewings on different news channels. NO provocation!
Beware people, the cops are as edgy as a long tailed cat in a room full of rockin chairs. If your mexican or black looking, or a long hair. Like the 60's, you're right.

98. Ohio huh?
Some things never change... here's a tune and a link for all you DU young-uns.

Ohio
lyrics by Neil Young

--------

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are gunning us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are gunning us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

http://www.thrasherswheat.org/fot/ohio.htm

We just protested longer and more after the pigs shot um down back then.
