The Documentary Channel - Another small step for the people's media
It has just been started (on 1/25/06, only on Dish Network Ch.197 so far). It is a spin-off from the Sundance Channel (Redford, Newman).

"We feel that the best documentaries are made by individuals not companies. That’s why we’ve created a home where the independent documentary filmmaker is always welcome."
http://www.documentarychannel.com/about.php

The schedule is at http://www.documentarychannel.com/schedule.php , and the little I have seen seem oriented toward art and music, putting their subject into the broader social and historical context and offering some insight into our common history without being at all pedantic.

Anyway, a heads up, for those who use Dish, as something people might want to check out.

1. Current TV is sort of like that
except they're too short.

2. Welcome to DU, and
you are right. Current TV http://www.current.tv/ is another small step forward which goes even further "to the people" for its content. Film makers need a much larger budget to put together the content shown on The Documentary Channel than to put together a clip which fits the shorter Current TV format. They both offer truths that are sorely absent from (and antithetical to) corporate media.
