The Worst-Case Scenario - 1/29/06 CBS - 60 minutes
One of the most disturbing aspects about the story is the bubble view held by HHS. ( see: The Worst-Case Scenario - 1/29/06 CBS - 60 minutes
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/01/27/60minutes/main1245714.shtml)

HHS is under the impression that in the event of a nuclear terrorist attack on a major city - the hospitals will be able to handle the casualties. It's apparent it hasn't occurred to them that such an attack would also cause considerable damage to the hospital buildings themselves as well as medical personnel.

Raub seemed to shrug off the "worst case scenario" with a "gee, it would be a catastrophe, but everyone will help out...."

This view from a bubble is exactly what led to the Katrina aftermath debacle. Do we want to continue with a bubble policy when we could be facing an event 100 times worse than Katrina?

After September 11 - the official administration's excuse was "who knew terrorists would fly planes into buildings."

After Katrina - the official administration's excuse was "who knew the levees would fail."

Do we want to wait for the next official administration excuse of "who knew a nuclear detonation in a major city would be so bad....who knew hospitals would also be blown up"?

3. Latest Zogby Poll asked about response to Katrina
and 9/11 and about response to possible future attacks. My responses weren't favorable. Imagine that.

6. I got that survey too..
It was the first one I've gotten that asked what I consider to be relevant questions.

12. Same here. That was Some survey.
And some of the questions were simplistic, as were some of the answers. I slogged through it anyway.

4. "but that's a catastrophe for you"
Twice he basically said that, in response to the short-sighted, corporate approved approach to a nuclear disaster...

Reminded me of Rummy's.. "that's freedom for you, some people steal. It's to be expected.

And this while explicitly opposing plans that would clearly be more effective and save more lives.

Does that man have any children or grandchildren? Can he not take his "approved" rhetoric no further than the bottom of that "approved" page? Despicable.

5. I think that anyone who saw NOLA after Katrina should know
that our cities hospitals simply will not be able to handle a catastrophe of that magnitude.

But it is typical of the all is well bull shit from the bu$h regime while pumping the fear that something will happen out of the other side of their mouths.

7. I refused to watch it.
I figured this is just one more step in tptb demonizing Iran so that they can plant the bomb themselves and have a ready fall guy.

8. The reality for urban nuclear defense has always been "die in place"
Just because a terrorist nuclear attack would be less devastating than an all out attack by a nuclear adversary is no reason to rethink anything.

9. Send Them The Films Of Hiroshima
They don't need to imagine anything! They can look at the actual footage. So, imagination is hardly a requirement.

10. It's easy to do disaster response planning
when your plan is to do nothing until the mayor and governor send you a certified registered return receipt requested letter at least three days in advance of the attack.

11. "...but everyone will help out..."
Which "everyone" is that Raub is thinking of? The wounded, blinded, stunned survivors? Or the people from all those other states that are now terrified of the radioactive city? Or possibly, those other countries we've pissed off in the last five years?

Yup...there'll be LOTS of 'everyones' to help out. Yup. :sarcasm:

13. The only thing that changes with this sorry ass administration is the
names and the faces. Everything stays the same.

I think junior has appeared more often, before the so-called public, than any president in the history of this country.

Like in those Banana Republics where the main man comes out every day to let the people know who's in charge.

15. Fire Sale Perscriptions....
After that segment ended we both looked at eash other and said the same thing.... "they've led this company on to create this medication, then left them in the lurch by not following through, now when they go bankrupt a mega pharma company will buy the drug formulations and copyrights for pennies on the dollar."
SHE: "Especially since the new chairman of the FDA is an ex Pharma CEO".
ME: "I wonder if the big pharma who buys this drug for pennies on the dollar will justify their mega-buck pricing per dose (since it will save your life, it will be mucho-exspensive per dose) for the high cost of the "drug's development". Not that we working stiffs will ever see a dose if we're exposed. Look at what happend, and is still happining, in New Orleans. We'll get written off, and the Pres. and Press will sing the praises of the recovery.

Cynicerly Yours.

16. That, or they don't really give a damn about the population,
Unless you are one of the 'lucky chosen ones with connections to BushCo.' to actually get one of the few doses they did buy.
