Could Feinstein have a democratic opponent? Cindy Sheehan might run
I think whomever the democratic senate nominee is in California that this is a safe seat - it would be great to see Cindy make it to DC!

Chavez Backs Sheehan Plan for Bush Protest

- - - - - - - - - - - -

By IAN JAMES Associated Press Writer

January 29,2006 | CARACAS, Venezuela -- Cindy Sheehan, who gained international fame when she camped outside President Bush's ranch in an anti-war protest, plans to pitch her tent again, Venezuela's president said Sunday as he urged activists worldwide to help bring down "the U.S. empire."

Hugo Chavez, an arm around Sheehan's shoulders, told a group of activists that she had told him "she is going to put up her tent again in front of Mr. Danger's ranch" in April.

In some of his strongest recent comments aimed at Washington, Chavez condemned the Bush administration and said his audience should work toward ending U.S. dominance.

<<<<snip>>>>

Sheehan, who lives in Berkeley, Calif., said Saturday that she is strongly considering challenging Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein because the lawmaker will not support calls to immediately bring the troops home.

Sheehan, 48, said running in the Democratic primary in June would help "bring attention to all the peace candidates in the country."

Sheehan, who was visiting Venezuela for the six-day forum, said she will decide whether to run after talking with her three adult children in California.

Sheehan accused Feinstein of being out of touch with Californians on the war in Iraq.

1. We need to get ahold of Cindy and find out what she really said...
First it was a comment that if DIFI didn't filibuster, she would run against her. I took that as an off hand comment. Now the past two days we've seen this story running that says "seriously considering" Well, which the hell is it?

I love Cindy and everything she is doing in Casey's name, but she's not qualified to be a Senator, unfortunately. :(

3. Not qualified? Did she need to get her degree in Senatorology or something
If I recall, politicians were never suppose to be career jobs but people elected to represent a group of people.

Last I recall, one doesn't necessarily need a degree of some sort to hold political office. Hell if they did that would probably disqualify that dumbass in the White House.

Anyhow, Cindy is more than qualified as long as she is registered to vote, of the legal age and free of any felonies then she is more than qualified!

6. She has no experience in State or even Local Legislation...
I know that legally she can run, just like I could, but she would be a pup in a den of wolves, and probably ineffective in the end. I don't like that things are that way, but they are.
Now, if she were to run for a state office, spend a few years there and get the hang of things... then I would vote for her in second.

8. Cindy is more qualified than the bastards in there right now
Apparently the qualifications for being a congressman have changed. You now have to be a shameless sellout, willing to whore yourself for the nearest corporation and take long three martini lunches meanwhile looking the other way while Bush ruins the country, effectively turning it into a dictatorship not a democracy.

Our 'representatives' in congress have been doing anything but representing us so how exactly are they qualified? They have failed in their main duty to uphold our constitution. Their staff does all the work, they vote with Bush and rake in all the cash.

Personally I will take any true American Patriot over the traitors we have running the country right now.

17. Anyone Remember Tom Hayden?
Or a better example might be Bobby Rush...former Black Panther whose been in the House of Reps for the past decade.

I agree with you about Cindy. Politics is a game and especially inside the Beltway. Principals and honesty are noble assets that do matter when I look at a candidate, but experience and the ability to make a difference inside the existing system means just as much. One balances one against the other...and something Feinstein supporters here have had to do numerous times over the years.

Problem is the activists get stiffled in the "deliberative" system that is the government, and right now the Democrats need effective legislators...people who know how to beat the Repugnicans at their own game, not set fires inside our own tent.

Cheers...

20. I was thinking General Election when I posted
Should have clarified.

Don't get me wrong, I would like to see here out there getting things done. But I think she would end up marginalizing the Dems in Cah-lee-Fawn-ee-yah and probably would convince some moderates that we are too extreme, getting them to not vote or vote Republican (despite Ahhnold's record of failure)

10. If she runs, and I hope she does, she will win!
DiFi may have the cash but Americans are waking up and no amount of money will make up for the enabling of the current madman wannabe dictator.

Cindy has truth on her side! And I look foward to the discussions that her running will bring about, not to mention the other Americans she might inspire to run as well. Bring it on Cindy!

well, not next door. Cindy's official home is somewhere here in Berkeley. As you can see though, she ain't much of a homebody these days, so we don't see her much.

15. Couldn't she relocate and challenge
a republican thug, like Delay ?

I'm not sure what the purpose of peace activists challenging Dems is, other than to give the GOP more Dem bashing fodder...."look they're eating their own now!!!".

That's why I'm not on DU's Run-Cindy-Run bandwagon

16. My mentality has always been this
Primary Elections: Fight to get rid of bad democrats
General Elections: Fight to get rid of republicans

I have no problem with a good primary fight if the current democrat seems to be a sellout. However, after the primaries then it's time we all get on board and focus our battles on the republicans even if that means voting for said sellout democrat

25. I think announcing this with Chavez was a bad idea.
Don't get me wrong, I like Chavez a lot, and I like Sheehan, but this is not the right way to kick off a campaign in the US. I would be happy to vote for a more progressive dem in this seat, but I don't think Sheehan would do anything but split the vote and help a repuke get in.

Maybe a more experienced and popular local figure like Jerry Brown could do it...
