Toby Keith: Music, politics and basketball skills

Q: With this new album, is it a relief not to have to deal with the controversy from the "Angry American" song?
A: Yeah, well, you know, my song was more for the police action that took place in Afghanistan — chasing a bad guy down that had killed a bunch of Americans. That bled over into the Iraq war, and
a lot of people want to paint me with that (conservative) brush. But I'm a lifetime Democrat, and that really pisses them off. They want me to be this big right-wing nut. I'm just a patriotic guy that was angry after 9/11 and knew our troops were going to have to go into Afghanistan because that country wasn't going to do the right thing and turn (Osama bin Laden) over to us.
Whatever we did, we didn't deserve to be attacked like that. And then people would go, "Oh, I guess the American way would be to just go bomb them." And I'm like, "That ain't the American way — that's just what they did to us." And I got so frustrated hearing that. So at the end of this song, I said, "We'll put a boot in your ass — it's the American way." It comes across as gung-ho, but in my view in writing it, it was a little more sarcastic. I guess it didn't come across that way.

Q: Do you and Willie Nelson ever talk politics?
A: All the time. You know what, he's a very liberal person, but he will tell you that we often agree. I'm always going to be right of where Willie is.
But I'm always going to be way left of Ted Nugent.http://www.idahostatesman.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060127/ENT03/601270315/1058/ENT
