Please, elected democracts, toss some history grenades when the right uses Clinton as both their excuse and boogey man. The country was stable and prosperous with a democrat in office. During his presidency the republicans complained he didn't have the right to authorize military action because he hadn't served in the military (ironic, I know) and then accused him of being afraid of another VietNam when he didn't act! Yet now, because he didn't do this or that, he's to blame for our perpetual war. Wrong. The first Bush allowed Sadaam to stay and reign over that region. The right doesn't refer to his presidency so I think you should.
Callers to C-Span, bloggers, rightwing strategists all point the finger of blame at Clinton yet I rarely hear democratic strategists savaging past republican presidents. For instance, while the rightwing was foaming at the mouth over Clinton's dealing with China, the former President Bush was making buckets speaking there. How can we forget how fond Nixon was of the Chinese or how much money this president's brother took from them? Get off the high road and fight like hell, damn it. Toss some out first for a change, why don'tcha?? What's wrong with saying, "The secrecy of this administration reminds us of the Nixon Whitehouse"? Or, "I'm reminded of Iran-Contra when..."?
If Bush was a democrat, the republicans wouldn't ever stop investigating his three failed businesses, insider trading or use of eminent domain in the baseball stadium deal. His past does influence the flawed policies that adversely affect us all - republican, democrat and independent - today. How did his 'faith' grant him an eternally redeemable Escape Accountability card accepted, evidently, by both parties? I'm not a moderate, an apologist or great fan of his but Clinton's adultery didn't endanger the nation, nor did his failed real estate deal.
The letter Pelosi wrote to Hastert was great but nobody's talking about it. Taking the high road doesn't convince the ever ellusive 'swing voter' you're strong enough to represent them. You know what a swing voter is, don't you? It's someone who can't stand what we have but who isn't convinced they can trust the alternative. We need a starker contrast to the party in power right now. Stop trying to appeal to them. Those who voted for this president based on narrow issues are never going to support you and you've got to realize that. Aim to secure support from your historic base and you can win.
