I just heard that Sen. Ensign (R-NV) was in an accident
Hello DU! I don't know much about this senator, to be honest. What I was thinking was that all of us activist should send this senator our "get well soon" / "best wishes" via email. I know that he is a republican (I don't know much else about him), but I think that it would produce good collective karma for us on DU.

I haven't looked up this dude's email address or anything yet, but I wanted to pitch this to DU. So what do y'all think? Should we try to coordinate a DU "Get well soon Sen. Ensign" email campaign?

49. Senator Reid spoke about this briefly
on the Senate floor just before the cloture vote yesterday. Senator Ensign was in a head-on collision in Las Vegas. I believe he was on his way to the airport. His air bags deployed, but he was doing well and had no head injuries.

As I posted yesterday, if the cloture vote had come within one, obviously this is not the way that we would have wanted to win. I think it's a nice thought to send him a get well message from all of us.

3. Senator Ensign in Car Accident
Senator John Ensign was transported to the hospital this morning following a car accident.

The accident happened before 8 a.m. near Paradise and Sands. Police say the driver of a Jeep swerved into Ensign's lane hitting his vehicle head on. Ensign's vehicle was also rear ended by another car.

Ensign was a passenger. His personal assistant was driving and also transported to the hospital. Both are said to not have life threatening injuries.

8. ENSIGN NAMED HUMANE SOCIETY’S LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR
(In case anyone is looking for a good reason...)

Thursday, January 19, 2006

Washington, D.C. – Senator John Ensign has been named Legislator of the Year for 2005 by the Humane Society of the United States, which cited his ongoing efforts to advance animal protection legislation at the national level. Senator Ensign is a veterinarian by trade.

“Animals and animal protection advocates have a true champion in Senator Ensign,” said Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States. “From working to end the gruesome practice of animal fighting to his efforts to halt the slaughter of horses for human consumption, Senator Ensign has shown true leadership and effectiveness on animal protection issues.”

In addition to his efforts on behalf of horses and animals trained for fighting, Senator Ensign is a cosponsor of a bill to crack down on puppy mills nationwide.

“As a veterinarian, I have a deep understanding of the issues that impact animals and animal lovers everywhere,” Ensign said. “I’m very proud to be named Legislator of the Year and will continue my efforts to advance animal protection measures in 2006.”

Ensign authored the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act, which makes it a felony to transport animals across state lines for the purpose of fighting and bans cockfighting implements. He also authored the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act in an effort to stop the practice of slaughtering horses for human consumption.

The Humane Society also cited Senator Ensign’s efforts on behalf of pets that were displaced in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Ensign traveled to Louisiana to assist in the coordination of the effort to rescue pets and reunite them with their owners.

10. I just emailed him with my best wishes and prayers that the accident is
not serious. Sen. Ensign is supporting alito and has his Senate floor video defending alito and a cute photo of him with a kitten, he won a Humane Society type of award and I mentioned the photo and congradulated him on his compassion to win this award and just made a short statement that I oppose alito for humanitarian reasons.

Edited on Mon Jan-30-06 01:37 PM by KzooDem
Don't get me wrong, I wish no harm to this man. It's too bad he was in an accident. I'm glad it wasn't too serious. I hope he has a safe and quick recovery. But, I'm sorry...the day I send some scratched up resmuglican senator a get well wish is the day hell freezes over. Ya'all are off your freakin' rockers if you ask me.

If we could nominate for "Stupidest Thread Of The Day", I'd vote this one up!

33. He is a bad guy. He is hurt.
Perhaps if a bunch of "good guys" (liberals) send him a get well note, he would be more compassionate, less of a dick.

What would it hurt to send a "get well note" to him?

Kindness is always beneficial. Hatred is almost always destructive (but not ALWAYS).

Edited on Mon Jan-30-06 02:32 PM by KzooDem
And my limit is sending get well messages to piece-of-shit resmuglicans. In case you haven't noticed we're in the midst of a war to regain control of our country from these clowns. And you want to send them get well messages because you think it will, what....make them like us? Jesus on a trailer hitch, wake up and come to your senses. You won't ever catch THIS pissed off Democrat EVER singing "Kumbaya" for ANY resmuglican, EVER.

37. these "limits" only harm you
There are only three things that matter in this life: 1) Promoting understanding (reducing ignorance) 2) healing (reduction of disease) 3) reduction of conflict (promoting peace).

If this is correct, then sending a "get well soon" note to Ensign would promote understanding, healing, and would reduce conflict. The effect might be minimal (microscopic), but every action has an effect.

Sending a get well card shows compassion. I want us to send get well wishes because I think that it is the right thing to do.

Let me ask you, if this was Sen. Jeffords, would you feel different? Would it matter if the year was 1999 or 2002?

People, republicans, can change. People, all people, can see the light. "Sometimes you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right."

Perhaps your get well thought could help Ensign (or one of his GOP staffers) "see the light".

Peace and low stress, and thank you for your post.

45. From the street names, apparently it was here in Las Vegas.
For a Republican, Ensign isn't too bad a guy. I've not seen any of his campaign lit. promote the crazies' stances on social issues (though they might put some out), and he's about the only congresscritter I know of who's so concerned about animal welfare.

I won't vote for him as long as it's a Senate seat in question, because we need all the Democrats we can get there, but in another, state- or local-level office he might be OK. Our present state admin., though all repubs., has been fairy moderate. Unfortunately that may change after the next election, if Gibbons wins the governor's office.
