Al-Zawahri Calls Bush a 'Butcher' in Video

CAIRO, Egypt - Al-Qaida No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri said in a videotape aired Monday that President Bush was a "butcher" and a "failure" because of a deadly U.S. airstrike in Pakistan targeting the bin Laden deputy.

Al-Zawahri, shown in the video wearing white robes and a white turban, said a Jan. 13 airstrike in the eastern village of Damadola killed "innocents," and he said the United States had ignored an offer from al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden for a truce.

"Butcher of Washington, you are not only defeated and a liar, but also a failure. You are a curse on your own nation," he said, referring to Bush. "Bush, do you know where I am? I am among the Muslim masses."

"My second message is to the American people, who are drowning in illusions. I tell you that Bush and his gang are shedding your blood and wasting your money in frustrated adventures," he said, speaking in a forceful and angry voice.

"The lion of Islam, Sheik Osama bin Laden, may God protect him, offered you a decent exit from your dilemma. But your leaders, who are keen to accumulate wealth, insist on throwing you in battles and killing your souls in Iraq and Afghanistan and — God willing — on your own land."

5. I will dismiss these "guys" and I think Al Qaeda is a myth

and no I don't think they are only working for Cheney.

7. Yes, the temptation is great. But there are logical reasons for that

There is the refusal, for example, during the Clinton administration, by a Republican Congress, articulated by Sens. Orin Hatch and Jesse Helms, to freeze terrorist assets. I remember those two boasting about defeating a bill to that in Dec. 2000, smirking at what they called 'Clinton making a mountain out of a molehill'.

Those of us in NY did NOT think it was a molehill, having already had an attack and followed the trials of those arrested.

I believe there are people out there who want to harm us, and others ~ but I also think that this administration supports them ~ and that their actions, Iraq and Iran, eg, will only inflame what might have been a spark of discontent, into a fire ~

For all we know, this guy in custody somewhere and was glad to have the opportunity to tell Bush what he thinks of him. There are any number of scenarios I can imagine, because we have no idea of what the truth is.

But one thing is for sure, Osama and his friends always get their videos to the press in time to help Bush. Like right before the election. Either they are super bad strategists, or just plain dumb. In that case, they aren't much of a threat.

And I'm always struck by the silly phraseology in these tapes. I know people from the ME I have met at work etc. Not one of them talks this way ~ it's almost comic book language. Their videos haven't done them much good either, so why keep doing it?

I'll remain skeptical ~ nothing would surprise me anymore, not even finding out that the 'terrorists' were working for this cabal ~ that's how much I distrust them.
