"In case something bad happens"
The guy from OMB this morning on WJ uttered this phrase to a gentleman who called to ask about pensions. Apparently this man worked for 29 years and 8 month, and because his company bellied-up, the PBGB "guaranteed" his pension to him.. He gets a measly $456 a month after almost 30 years. Donald Marron of the OMB commiserated with him and then praised the PBGB for honoring his pension commitment, and complimented the government for "helping out" ..."in case something bad happens"..

This is the underlying republican "problem". They never see themselves as CAUSING anything to happen. They are just blithely wandering through life "doing good deeds for humanity", and anything that "happens" as a result of their mismanagement, is somehow not their fault.

They attack every issue aggressively and boldly, but the consequences of their actions are always in the "passive" sense.. something done TO them..not BY them..

The economy is terrible, yet they continue to say how great it is, even when the indicators prove them wrong. When they do admit a bit or truth, it's always someone eles's fault..Clinton..Carter..Johnson..anyone with a "D" after their name.

The war is not going the way they wishe, so it's the fault of the media's failure to report the "good stuff". They can;t even bring themselves to admit that the media, for the most part is a beast of their own creation..in their own image.

The country is hopelessly divided and bitter, and they see no complicity. It just "happened".

Marron also admitted that "there are two ways of calculating the debt"..in other words, the guy admitted that they are "keeping two sets of books", anathema to bookkeepers and auditors everywhere. The set of books they praise is the one where everything looks rosy and pretty. The set they don't talk about much is the one where the truth is exposed. When THAT set comes to light occasionally, once again it's not their fault..and we get to hear about the "recession" they inherited and how the bad numbers "just happened".
