Bush "Wants Iranians to have greater freedom" Translation: BOMBS AWAY
Bush to say wants Iranians to have greater freedom
by Steve Holland
2 hours, 20 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush will offer words of support on Tuesday in his State of the Union address to Iranians who want greater freedom as U.S. diplomats push for sanctions over the Islamic republic's nuclear program.

In his annual speech, Bush will include a discussion of global hot spots and his drive for democracy worldwide, along with domestic priorities like improving the U.S. health-care system and promoting ways to wean Americans from foreign oil.

Bush is walking a tightrope with his Iran policy, denouncing Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for refusing to halt a nuclear program the West suspects is aimed at developing an atomic weapon, while encouraging freedom in Iran and trying not to alienate the Iranian people.

"We want the people of Iran to be able to live in a free society," Bush said during a Cabinet meeting on Monday to discuss his annual State of the Union speech. "So tomorrow night I am going to talk about this issue and make clear the policy of the United States."

3. Holy welfare parallel, Batman!
So we're fighting to give them democracy. But we're curtailing democratic rights here at home. Why can't we all move over there, then?

Or what am I missing? Freedom is a lovely thing, but the people are going to want it on their own, surely? I want a job, but nobody is just going to give me one...

So. Here's the hard Hypno-Question of the week: How often do YOU accept free charity? Doesn't that make you indolent and worthless if you take it? Why can't you pull yourself up by your own damn bootstraps like I had? That's the usual garbage republicans tell us all regarding welfare... And it's no different for democracy, you need to do it on your own. THAT is the dichotomy.

Unless history is wrong and the Redcoats said "Okey doke then, we'll let you separate. Twinklie-toodly-doodles :hi:. " :eyes:

So, where is the evidence showing the Iranian people want freedom?

Freedom is also about tolerating those you do not agree with...

6. Well, changes don't happen overnight...
But people, when oppressed, don't know what to go do with themelves once the oppressive regime leaves; and these "leaders" we're dealing with are true scumbags, never forget that.

Especially when there's little evidence of wanting TO be free, nixing the pecking order only invites chaos - and that is inevitable. It does take a very long period of time to reestablish order. And then there's the risk of the nation-builders themselves being perceived as helpers or hurters during the process. Plenty of pics I've seen with US folks with the locals don't show many smiling faces ON the locals... I can infer they don't want us there based on that alone; but the insurgents keep growing, suggesting even moreso that they did not want us at all.

Stockholm syndrome; love thy captor?

They have to rebuild things on their own. Outsiders are rarely seen as helpers without massive amounts of proof. And the outsiders might build something that the nation-builders wanted the opposite of. (The irony that Hamas now runs Palestine is shocking, to say the very least.)

7. My point was that in *'s words, "freedom" means "bombing".
What to say about your patronizing comment that the oppressed don't know what to do with their freedom!

Recent history shows people are quite capable of bringing about their own freedom if things get bad enough.

- The Iranians got rid of the Shah on their own.
- The Argentianians pressured the junta to retore political liberties.
- The Filipinos got rid of Marcos on their own
- The Indonesians got rid of Suharto on their own.

..and so on.

They don't need to be mass-murdered to get them started.

8. Iranians to Bush: Take long walk off short pier.
They may not be happy with their current government, but they have verrrrrrry long memories. Such as 1953, when the CIA-backed coup deposed their democratically-elected president Mossadegh, and installed the Shah, until 1979.

They won't accept another attempt at usurping their government by a foreign power, no matter what.
