Help me find out who the 11 Democrats who helped confirm Thomas were!
The Committee sent the nomination to the full Senate without a recommendation either way. Thomas was confirmed by the Senate with a 52-48 vote on October 15, 1991, making it the closest confirmation vote for a Justice in the 20th century. The vote was not strictly by party line; he received "yea" votes from 41 Republicans and 11 Democrats and "nay" votes from 46 Democrats and 2 Republicans.

<snip>

Got this from Winkopedia. How the hell can I find this info? I want to know who those eleven Senators are.

Peace.

2. And look at that- only ONE still in office
Which is why so many keep pointing out the importance of this vote as opposed to possibly losing a couple of Senate seats this fall. Which is more important? Which has the most and longest impact on the lives of Americans? There is your answer right there in LM's post.

He voted for Alito today, too.

Peace.

13. No
You're thinking of Tim Johnson of South Dakota.

Georgia's two senators are Landreu (Dem) and Vitter (Rep). Both voted for cloture.

I realized I made a mistake.

Louisiana's two senators are Vitter and Landreui.

GA's two are worse - Chambliss and Isakson. Sorry about the cofusion.

6. bears repeating - only one still in office
Senators come and go and each one is just one of a hundred. But Supreme Count Justices are there for life. If Alito is on the court until he is as old as the current oldest Justice then he will be there until almost 2040.

12. Yep..
and that guy left the party.

Some of them were fairly popular politicians in their states though and could have been elected again, but retired (Breux and Hollings).

3. That's ten...
... the eleventh was Fowler of Georgia.

Looks like that vote was a red/purple extravaganza, too.

7. Sorry, I'm tired
They're all at the link, but alphabetized rather than broken down by vote or party. I'll edit that one in.

Thanks for the correction. :)

10. Well, that's only because they don't figure into such lists...
... because they don't elect too many Democrats these days. !

Instead, they elect sleazy and/or religiously insane people like Brownback and Roberts.

9. Shelby jumped tracks in 1994, I think it was.
Yes he did. Scum

From Wiki:

On November 9, 1994, Shelby switched his party affiliation to Republican one day after the Republicans won control of both houses in the midterm elections. He won his first full term as a Republican in 1998 by a large margin, and faced no significant opposition in 2004.

I was living in AL when he pulled this stunt. People were pissed.

A reward for screwing the dems that elected his rotten ass into office in the first place.

21. Democrats haven't run in the red states for years....
When the republicans have chosen who they want their candidate to be, a bunch of other republicans start calling themselves democrats just because they want a shot at a cool job that gets them out of town on a regular basis.
