So this is how Democracy dies.
Edited on Tue Jan-31-06 08:44 AM by olafvikingr
I don't deny this has got me in a funk. It seems no matter how much goes wrong for this Administration, they are still able to incrementally get their way, slowly deconstructing our society.

I was listening to a song this morning on my way in to work from the band "Death Cab for Cutie". If you haven't heard of them, they have an easy listening sound with thought inducing lyrics. Anyway the song is called "What Sarah Said" and the relevant verse is:

"I'm thinking of what Sarah said...Love is watching someone die".

Only here, our dying love is not someone, but something...our democracy.

So sad, and half the population or more doesn't even know it.

1. We need a group hug.
Then we need to take a deep breath and get back to business. It ain't over yet.

2. Exactly...
I never expected the filibuster to be successful, so I guess I'm not so down about it. We've got plenty of other work to do.

4. I expected better than 25 votes.
I was willing to accept defeat but I am fairly well devastated that 19 supposedly Democratic senators couldn't be bothered.

3. It's only going to die if we let it
Having a bad day isn't losing the war. IT's having a bad day. Alito sucks, and will do a lot of bad things; but that just means we need to fight harder.

7. One of the best lines (if not the only good line) from Star Wars
Episode III:

So this is how liberty dies...with thunderous applause.

Think of that tonight when all the trained seals in Congress slap their flippers together.

8. Only Physics will stop them now
Edited on Tue Jan-31-06 09:40 AM by StClone
How do we outsmart them when they have the money to buy the brightest minds.
How do we push back when they have God on their side.
How do we out vote them out when the voting is manipulated.
How do we overpower them when our own Senators vote with them.
How do we gain financial support when the Corporations own them.
How do we legislate when they permeate ever branch of government.
How do we get the word out when they own the media.
How do we end their grip when enough Americans support them.

How will it end?

We are the lone person in front of the tank and the tank did not stop, nor did it turn. It won't be stopped by our hands. A bigger power maybe China, a world famine, pandemic or economic collapse will caused or exacerbated by their policies and only then will it end. Then their faithful will wail, or praise them(!), for the end times will have arrived. Even though the only end will be the end of America as we knew it.

Some climactic event will be the signal. The only thing that will stop them is the sheer physics of it.

9. ...and we're worried about the civil war in Iraq? We should be
worried about the one brewing here.
