This LTTE really pisses me off |
|
Saw this in the Orlando Sentinel yesterday:
How much is privacy worth?
Posted January 30, 2006
I don't like President Bush, but I voted for him. I'm a registered Democrat, but the Democrats didn't have a viable candidate.
I do support the president in his effort to monitor known al-Qaeda operatives and other potential terrorists. Sometimes we have to give up some privacy in order to have freedom. If the government monitors my telephone because I mention a certain word, then I believe the government has the right to do so until it confirms that I'm not a threat. I believe the government has the need and right to withhold information from the general public, especially the media. The general public doesn't always have the right to know.
With the strong election results for the Palestinian Hamas, I believe this is going to encourage the terrorists and insurgents in Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries to increase their attacks around the world. Should we have another attack, it may be far worse than what we saw on Sept. 11.
I pray it doesn't happen.
James Smith
Winter park
My response LTTE:
In his letter on Monday, Mr. Smith asks the question "How much is privacy worth." I would ask him, "how much is the Constitution worth?" Nobody disputes the fact that government has a right (and duty) to gather information in order to combat terrorism. In fact, there are times when the government has a genuine need to spy on its citizens. But there is a process for that. The FISA court was created specifically with such situations in mind. In cases where agents must act quickly, they can go ahead and conduct their wiretaps and get the warrant applied retroactively. There is a reason for this process, to ensure that government doesn't abuse its power. It frightens me that this president has shown such a disregard for due process.

1. I don't believe anyone who says they are a registered Democrat |
|
but voted for Bush then goes on to praise his policies. It's total bullshit. It's part of the same plan that Republicans call the lines at CSPAN pretending to be Dems and like some of the posters on this message board who pretend to be Dems just so they can disrupt. Their sole purpose is to divide Democrats from within using Republican operatives.

2. I wasn't too fond of Kerry personally, but still voted for him! |
|
Just like if Hillary winds up being our nominee in '08 - I'm not thrilled with her either, but either Kerry or Hillary is a thousand times better than a repug neocon.
I wonder what his excuse was in '00? Maybe Al Gore wasn't good enough for him either?
Of course this assumes that he is being truthful in the fact that he is a registered Democrat. This is Florida after all, we have plenty of DINOs down here.

This morning while driving to work, Maddow and her co-host (don't know name) were laughing at a voice mail from a "long time Democrat" who had a similar type message. They were chuckling because the guy left something like 30 voice mails and she said he tried to disguise his voice and use different accents. People who do this are freepers posing as Democrats. Its a transparent attempt imo to try and make it seem as though Democrats are going toward the Republican party in droves! With even some Republicans not happy with him how does a long time Democrat all of a sudden have nothing but praise for bush and his policies? You are correct. Its total bullshit.

4. James Smith of Winter Park, you're a piss-your-pants scared little boy |
|
And I'll say that without fear of contradiction. You're probably also a liar, but I'll leave that matter to a further development of the facts.

6. And if it was a Dem administration? |

These morans would show their true colors if it was a Democrat who had ordered the secret domestic snooping.

11. Funny how they claim Clinton was doing it also |
|
But at the time, I don't recall any major repug outcry over illegal spying. I do recall a major repug outcry over a blowjob, however.

13. Outcry or not, doesn't matter |

The Repub defense that "Clinton did it too" is no more persuasive a justification than the childish "He/she did it first." My parents didn't buy that line; I doubt Repub parents are any more (gasp) liberal with the excuses they'll accept from their children for wrong behavior.
The Repubs had charge of the Congress for much of Clinton's term. If what Clinton did was wrong they were fully capable of requesting an investigation into the legalities. As you point out, they chose to get their panties in a twist over a blowjob instead.
"Clinton did it too" is no excuse. It's just another Repub exercise in evading the "personal responsibility" they like to preach to others about.

I call shenanigans on any mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging, scared lying freeper whose first line is "I'm a registered democrat who voted for Bush*." Good LTTE.
