Ohio Voter Rights Being Stolen NOW... RIGHT Now.
Ohio Voter Rights Being Stolen NOW... RIGHT Now.
by: Renee in Ohio
January 31, 2006 at 10:27:59 America/Los_Angeles

The phone just rang, and I heard my husband saying, "What?! That's insane!" When he got off the phone, he informed me that the call was from the mother of one of our daughter's classmates, telling us about a protest that is going on right now. I had no idea about the part of H.B. 3 that you see below in boldface, until we got this call and I went Googling for it:

Demonstration at the Ohio Statehouse at noon to raise our voices against House Bill 3, the bill that will require showing an ID to vote and preventing any challenge to the results of a federal election in Ohio.

Location:Ohio Statehouse, Broad and High Streets, west lawn.

Renee in Ohio :: Ohio Voter Rights Being Stolen NOW... RIGHT Now.

I have no idea if there is anything that can be done at this point, but at very least I wanted to make some noise about this. If anyone has any ideas about how we can respond at this late hour, please share them.

5. No problem if the picture ID is FREE and easily available to all
how do you not understand that? They tried to enact such a requirement in Georgia, and then made sure that there was nowhere in Atlanta where picture ID could be acquired.

Otherwise, yes, it smacks of a poll tax and fascism.

14. You have to prove who you are when you register to vote
Once you have been properly registered, your signature on the voting rolls should be more than sufficient to prove your identity at the polls. Requiring a 'photo identification' at the polls places an unfair burden on the elderly and poor who may not have the means to get to a DMV or other state office to get a photo ID, much less pay for one.

When seniors are increasingly having to choose between eating and paying for their prescription medications, requiring them to pay for gas or other transportation and also pay for a photo ID to vote, when their signature should suffice, is tantamount to applying a 'poll tax' they must pay so that they can vote.

This move will affect the poor, minorities, and elderly voters more than most other people. It's not surprising that the three groups of people I mentioned happen to vote Democratic in larger numbers than they do Republican.

If they want to require a photo ID at the polls, then they should start taking people's picture when you first register to vote and incorporate the picture into your voter registration card. Anyone registered prior to that rule going into effect should be exempt until they need to re register after having moved to a new voting precinct.

15. If you don't see a problem with forbidding election challenges
then you might just be in the wrong place. Enjoy your stay.

12. The right wingers are pushing this in Minnesota too,
at least the photo I.D. part. So far it doesn't seem to be getting much attention which pisses me off big time. When stuff like this happens dems should all over it like butter on toast. A drivers license is the primary source for a photo I.D. -- how many inner city poor don't have drivers licenses?
