Poll question: should Dems walk out during the SOTU? |

I doubt any Democrat in the Congress has any of this, but I want to see how people here feel about this

They should just not show up. One whole side empty. Have them stand outside to give interviews "...they dont' even want to listen to our ideas or concerns, and they overrule us at every turn, all we can do is fight and hope to win back seats in 2006, or this country will only dig itself into deeper trouble."

the Democratic party would have to actually grow a pair of balls to do something like that, and we all know that will never happen. Doing something like that might cost us votes in 08, you know.

When they hear something they disagree with THEY BOO! I know the first time I watched the British Parliement I was really surprised! I never realized all sides were so vocal!
I'm quite tired of the "My esteemed collegue" or "My friends from the other side of the isle" BS. There is no friendship between the two parties anymore, so why the charade?
If they don't like what they hear...BOOO loudly! Can't you just see the visual response of Shrub from his perch...ON NATIONAL TV!!!!!

|
radical leftwinger. I'm a pretty laid back lady who always looks for some compromise. I was a buyer for a large corporation for 5 years, and I learned a lot about negotiations. You realize, that's what we're doing here...negotiating with the American people to get their vote. It's all about risk! Neither side really knows just how far the other is willing to go. The one who makes the base decision that "this is what I want, and I'll risk the untried to get it" usually wins!
I think it's worth the risk! Sure there will be people who bitch about it, and call the Dems names. SO what? What else is new????

19. No: Bad example and lets rest of speech stand unchallenged. |
|
We need to know what he says, we need to hear the lies and point them out. We need Americans to listen. We need Americans to listen to the rebuttle.
We need them to hear the lies so we can point them out later.
If they do walk out in the middle, what is the reaction when he says something patriotic that everyone would like, and they pan to an empty set of desks. Going to walk back inside when something good is said? Then walk out again? Flip, flop, flip, ...
The unclapping is fine. Hoots are fine. When and where appropo.

23. I voted NO, because..... |

the Republicans have shown how immature they can be, if in no other manner than the corruption that has been uncovered and their inability to control their greed. I think the Democrats should all attend, but be serious, solemn and stare, enmasse. Do not take your eyes away from his. I do not think they should applaud, boo or show any reaction to his words, unless he follows the Democratic beliefs and policies--you know that ain't gonna happen.
If anything will unnerve him, it will be facing a group of those he knows have opposing views, who are sitting there staring back at him with disdain and disbelief at what they are hearing. If he had his druthers, the Democrats wouldn't have been invited or allowed to enter the chamber. If he is a normal human being, he is already nervous about how the speech is going to be accepted, so it is a prime opportunity for the Dems to stare him down and see how well he works under pressure. Besides, it will create a whole bunch of Bushisms in the process. JMHO

The use of over-the-shoulder sashes is common around the world to show membership and solidarity; think of Ukraine orange, Northern Ireland tories, also orange, and the green of Hamas. I think it could be effective, especially on television. They should "respect the office" and stand on *'s entry, sit down immediately, but NO applause, never stand up again. Total silence. All Reps and Senators, and any other Dem who wants to show "true colors." I proposed this a few times, including to the originator of the walkout idea, but no response, so maybe it's not such a brilliant idea? ;-) The risk of not showing up or of walking out would be spun by big media to Dem detriment, and I feel the downside risk of this far outweighs the temporary feel-good moments we'd experience. BTW - auditable paper ballots are the only answer!

45. emotion vs. thinking, tough call |
|
I agree - that's how I FEEL, too. I'm sure that only the tip of the iceberg of corruption and complete incompetence has been exposed. But, you have to look beyond the immediate gratification (and I'm big on such behavior) and think about the undecideds-uncommitteds who are, sadly, a sizable segment of the voting public. This demographic may not view the walkout as a positive, rather as a "sore loser" response to l'affaire Alito. I just don't see much of an upside response from the national, non-partisan viewership. The downside is that Rove, Inc. already has a tactic in place with the Reich-wing media to spin a walkout, and they will make a huge deal of it. Am I too cautious? Maybe, but maybe I've tried to THINK it through, to get past my first urge for revenge...
The ratings of the SOTU's have been dropping over the years, so it's probable that only the more partisan will be watching...the darkside gang and the enlightened choir. We need to reach the middle 15-20%.
Hand-counted, auditable paper ballots or else! :kick:
