Tonights Letter To Sen Cantwell....

Senator Cantwell,

As your constitiuent I am confused about your voting record on the Justice Alito confirmation vote.

You on January 30th voted yes on cloture then turned around on Janurary 31st and voted no on confirming Justice Alito...

Would you please explain what led you to vote in this matter, if you did not want Alito to be confirmed why did you not support a fillibuster. Would you clarify your actions.

I will report her response.

3. MARIA REPLYS.....SORTA

Never answeered why she didnt vote for a fillibuster......

Hedre is the text of what she replied.....

Dear Mr. Smith,

Thank you for contacting me about the confirmation of Samuel A. Alito Jr. I appreciate your input on this critical issue. As you know, in a 58-42 decision, Justice Samuel Alito has been confirmed by the Senate to be Associate Justice on the United States Supreme Court.

I take my Constitutional responsibility as a senator to advise and consent on judicial nominations extremely seriously. While I recognize the privilege of the President to select his nominees, I believe it is critical that we conduct a comprehensive evaluation of each nominee's qualifications, since Supreme Court judges are expected to impartially interpret our nation's laws during their lifetime terms.

I was very concerned with Justice Alito's record regarding an individual's constitutional right to privacy. While I do not expect any judicial nominee to prejudge future cases, I do expect all nominees to make their positions clear on protecting the most basic rights of individuals and the fundamental structure and foundations of our democracy. In the end, I cannot be sure that Justice Alito would do either.

Justice Alito has a record of concern when it comes to placing and consolidating the rights of the government over the rights of the individual and he has not provided the answers to adequately reassure the people of our nation. I must conclude that he would neither show due respect for the authority of Congress nor apply a necessary check to the reach of the executive. With great respect for the institution, I could not vote to confirm Justice Alito to the Supreme Court of the United States .

Thank you again for contacting me to share your thoughts on this matter. Finally, you may be interested in signing up for my weekly update for Washington state residents. 4. I think you ought to call her on the fact that she didn't answer your
question AT ALL. You could do it in a nice way if you wanted - "I'm sorry, but it seems like I wasn't very clear in my letter. What I really would like to know is why you didn't vote against cloture . I would very much appreciate a response regarding this critical issue ."

5. My Reply To The Reply.....

Senator Cantwell,

I apologize if I did not make myself clear. I wanted an explanation on why you supported cloture??

It is pretty self explanatory why you would vote NO on Alito confirmation but you seem to cancel your vote out when voted YES to cloture.

I have began to look at Mark Wilson on a serious level as it seems that you have lost the ability to address the concerns of your constitiuents.

Again I asked to explain the anti fillibuster vote as addressed above. You may have to go beyond sending a form letter to do this.

Thanks again
Randall Smith

Have I been respectful in this????

7. Your letter...
.. is reasonable IMHO. Basically, she either forwarded you her "Alito form letter", which is what most of them do, or she's trying to dodge.

I doubt if you will get a real answer, these folks think their constituents are stupid, and treat them as such.
