Capitol Hill wife who just won't sit still
By Bill Adair
Seen but not heard? Not Beverly Young. For wounded soldiers, she'll make such a fuss until laws are changed.

WASHINGTON - Beverly Young, wife of Rep. C.W. Bill Young of Indian Shores, said she was ejected from the House gallery during Tuesday night's State of the Union address because she was wearing a T-shirt that said "Support the Troops - Defending Our Freedom."

Young said she was sitting in the gallery's front row, about six seats from first lady Laura Bush, when she was approached by someone from the Capitol Police or sergeant-at-arms office who told her she needed to leave the gallery.

She reluctantly agreed but argued with several officers in the hallway outside the House chamber.

"They said I was protesting," she said in a telephone interview late Tuesday. "I said, "Read my shirt, it is not a protest.' They said, "We consider that a protest.' I said, "Then you are an idiot."'

She said she was so angry that "I got real colorful with them."

They told her she was being treated the same as Cindy Sheehan, an antiwar protester who was ejected before the speech Tuesday night for wearing a T-shirt with an antiwar slogan and refusing to cover it up.

Beverly Young said, "Wait until the president finds out."

2. And the hits just keep on coming
They screwed up with Sheehan, tried to demonstrate it goes both ways, and now,

Young's husband, a Republican who chairs the House appropriations subcommittee on defense, was unaware she was removed until after the speech. He said he was furious about the incident.

"I just called for the chief of police and asked him to get his little tail over here," Rep. Young said late Tuesday. "This is not acceptable."

4. Okay, Mrs. Young, ...
let's see the bruises on your arm. At least the Officers ASKED her to leave, where, in Miss Shehan's case, the Officer screamed "protester!", damn near jumped on her and dragged her up the steps. And who says chivalry is dead?

10. Her damn husband did, though--pretty nearly, anyway!!!!
"I just called for the chief of police and asked him to get his little tail over here," Rep. Young said late Tuesday. "This is not acceptable."

Chief Gainer certainly doesn't have a "little tail" by any stretch of the imagination...

Rep Young, be prepared to be cited for every conceivable parking violation!

6. actually, they're on far stronger legal ground if they DID arrest her
if they had a blanket rule that all t-shirts/banners/etc., REGARDLESS OF MESSAGE, are against the rules, then that's one thing.

however, once they get into discriminating based on WHAT the t-shirt says, that's a whole nother ballgame. blatantly against the first amendment to make/enforce rules based on political content.

8. HOLY SHIT--that sentiment was IN THE MONKEY's SPEECH!!!!!
It was IN HIS SPEECH, fachrissake!!!!!

blah, blah, blah....Our nation is grateful to the fallen who live in the memory of our country.

....We are grateful to all who volunteer to wear our nation's uniform.

And, as we honor our brave troops, let us never forget the sacrifices of America's military families.
....blah blah blah!

And unless she was arrested and booked, she was NOT treated the same as Cindy Sheehan.

She was the "designated deflector" so that the Cap cops could claim that they were being evenhanded.

And speaking of even hands, what about those stupid purple fingers last year? Arrest the entire GOP caucus!!!!!!

12. Perfect!
Miss Sheehan, who'll be filing a lawsuit against the Government for her arrest, just found an ally in Mrs. Young. The fact that they were treated VERY differently gives credence to Cindy's claim that her First Amendment Rights were violated. Can you imagine Mrs. Young -- who argued with the Officer whereas Cindy did not -- having to give a deposition about her experience? Was she phsycially forced to leave? "Um, no" Was she dragged up and down steps? "Well, not really" Was she arrested and incarcerated for _____ hours? "Hell no!" Thank you, that will be all. PLUS having Mrs. Young involved gives EXTRA publicity to the little dickweed's f*cked up anti-dissent policies. Call me crazy, but I think this is going to be hilarious!

14. I just had the same thought. Helps us, too, when talking to wingers.
The difference in behavior is especially interesting, and what fun we can have with the representative's furious comment about the police chief's "little tail."

Sounds as if the police were trying to polish a turd retroactively by going after another T-shirt wearer.

17. I hope she and Cindy meet.
I just read the earlier article about B. Young that is linked in the article about last night. I'd bet the two women could see each other's point of view, and I'm wondering if Young would even support Cindy's wearing the T-shirt.

I'm sending the article about last night to Olbermann. Hope he'll point out the difference in the way the two women were treated.
