AP: Bush Urges Confidence in His Leadership
Edited on Wed Feb-01-06 05:46 PM by smoogatz
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - President Bush said Wednesday he understands why the nation he has led for five years has become more anxious, and he urged people to have confidence in him.

Bush maintained his optimistic message in a lengthy speech at the Grand Ole Opry House that was designed to build momentum from the previous night's State of the Union address. But in a rare acknowledgment of the troubled times on his watch, he tried to show empathy with the public's worries.

"People are uncertain, in spite of our strong union, because of war, and I understand that," Bush said.

Well, let's see: there's your failure to act to prevent 9/11; there's making up all that stuff about Saddam's WMD; there's your ham-handed conduct of the occupation and looming civil war in Iraq and the fact that you've basically handed the whole country over to Iran; there's those missing billions in reconstruction money while most Iraqis still don't have enough electricity or clean water; there's all those tax cuts for the rich and squandering Clinton's surplus and bankrupting the nation; there's your lobbyist-written Medicaid drug entitlement and all the lobbyist-unwriting of environmental law; there's your idiotic attempt to privatize Social Security; there's your utterly failed foreign policy in every corner of the globe, from North Korea to Iran to Israel/Palestine to Canada; there's the administration's glacial and grossly incompetent response to hurricane Katrina; there's the stagnant US economy and big increases in poverty and infant mortality; there's rampant offshoring of jobs, looming crises in Medicare, debt to China, pension funding and the healthcare industry; the fact that you've packed your administration with corrupt, incompetent cronies and lobbyists; the fact that you've appointed two far-right ideologues to the Supreme Court and are doing everything in your power to undermine a woman's right to choose; and of course there's the fact that you're spying illegally on American citizens, thousands of them, and we have to take your word for it that they're in league with al Qaeda. THOUSANDS of Americans. Yep, that'll inspire confidence in your leadership all right.

Christ on a cracker. We're SO screwed.

6. After giving ample evidence...

... himself that the public shouldn't trust him or his cronies, now Bush wants the public to go on trusting him. Carrying on with the same illogical approach to governance, I see.

8. Ladies and Gentlemen, it is now official
George W. Bush has jumped the shark and is now a lame duck in his own party.

The hearings on wiretapping, Scooter in court, the hearings on Plame (Fitz ain't done yet, folks!), Rove will be indicted, Delay is toast, Abramoff is like a nuclear meltdown for them, all this is going to sink his presidency, and there will be nothing to stop it. Nothing. They will run screaming from this mess to save their own political hides. And it will be too late.

The pundits can't save them. Jeebus can't save them. Money can't save them.

I'm feeling pretty good about things right now. Alito can go piss up a rope as far as I'm concerned, we can impeach him, too.

OBTW, Gonzalez is gonna be toast. He perjured himself before Congress.

10. I'm getting some Enron deja vu:
Then:

"Talk up the stock and talk positively about Enron to your family and friends," Lay exhorted employees during a company-wide electronic town hall meeting on Sept. 26, just four days before Enron closed out the worst quarter in its history. "The company is fundamentally sound."

Now:

LAT: Defense Says Doubt, Not Greed, Hurt Enron
Defense Says Doubt, Not Greed, Hurt Enron

HOUSTON — Enron Corp.'s shocking 2001 collapse was caused by a crisis of confidence in the company's financial prospects and not by a conspiracy involving Kenneth L. Lay and Jeffrey K. Skilling, lawyers for the former corporate chieftains said in the opening arguments of their federal trial here Tuesday.
