It Is the Total Information Awareness program
Edited on Thu Feb-02-06 09:46 PM by warbly

A similarly revealing sparring session came when Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon, pressed the intelligence officials about whether a controversial Pentagon data-mining program called Total Information Awareness had been effectively transferred to the intelligence agencies after being shut down by Congress.

Mr. Negroponte and the F.B.I. director, Robert S. Mueller III, both said they did not know. Then came the turn of Gen. Michael V. Hayden, who headed N.S.A. for six years before becoming the principal deputy director of national intelligence last spring.

"Senator," General Hayden said, "I'd like to answer in closed session."

NY Times
General Hayden's refusal to answer confirms it. The TIA program was transferred to the NSA from the Pentagon after congress closed it in 2003. It never went away, it just went black.
Information on Total Information Awareness is here.

2. I can guarantee that you're right; TIA didn't go away, but I can also
guarantee you this: It doesn't work.

Its still squatting there on a Hitachi supercomputer feeding NAS clusters, but nobody has the faintest fucking idea what to do with the data.

Two words: Information overload.

Therefore, not anything for us to worry about, except for the fact that it's that much more of our tax money thrown down a rathole.

3. Bullshit misinformation...
...and I've seen quite a bit of it. The point is they are storing that data. They may not be able to pick up, thru data mining, indications of anything of national security concern, or they might, but I'm damn certain they could punch in the name of a political enemy and come up with reams of material.

5. No. It doesn't work like that. There's no "punching in a name" in a system
that's this complex. Ever.

You give those people WAY too much credit. Ever study ERP systems?

If you had, you'd know that's it's never as easy as "punching in a name."

9. Pardon me...
...for simplifying, but it's not that complex either. So save it, and what does this have to do with ERP systems? And yeah, I really believe that corporations and the government sink billions into data mining technology annually because they can't use it at all.

10. Ah, actually, they do.
If you were in the business, you'd know that. Corporations and the Government do sink billions into data-mining projects that are, in the end, utterly worthless. It happens all the time.

You can be as hostile as you want, but that doesn't change the facts.

Furthermore, this has everything to do with ERP systems, because it has to do with complexity.

I'd explain it, but your hostile tone makes me unwilling to spend the time to do so. A bit of research on your part, rather than being argumentative, would supply all the information you'd need to understand what I'm saying.

11. Your patronizing tone...
...does little to convince anyone. I've done a bit of research, and I disagree with your conclusions. I consider this matter a threat to our civil liberties, not just a "waste of taxpayer dollars". My apologies if this somehow runs counter to your agenda of being dismissive of our concerns.

So pardon me if I choose to disregard your "expert opinion" on this matter.

8. One of the Senators asked what they did with the information...?
Once they found it was not useful. None of them agreed to respond in open hearing...
