comes to politics she doesn't even know why I'm pissed, and she doesn't want to know.

24. Another missing item
No place would want me. I'm 50 and disabled, can't work now unless some cures are found.
No medicare if I went to another country, not sure about SSD. I know Americans living overseas who became disabled while working there and though still US citizens, they are taken care of. My friend in Finland is treated better then people who became disabled here!

Here you wait 2 years to get Medicare and if you don't have LTD you are screwed (not in a fun way) during the year or two fight for SSD.

My friend there got PT as soon as he was able, all the medicine he needed. MRI cost $20. Wages continue to be compensated.

But I don't think they'd want a middle aged person with so many problems.

I wanted my son and his wife to leave the country after the 2004 elections though. I told them this country didn't deserve them now. They are still here but if it keeps going downhill I hope they move away before they have their kids.

2. No, I still believe in our Constitution and Bill of Rights, and our ..
basic system of government. My hubby and I are blessed, along with our daughter. We have time to work for equal protection of the law for everyone. I have faith in my progressive friens both nationally and in California.

3. Yes I've toyed with the idea but this is MY country too. With all its
flaws and idiot republicans. Being a citizen is like being a parent. You love your kids even when they are f**ked up. You don't abandon them. I'll be damned if the idiot republicans have any more right to be here than I do. I have more right to be here than they do. They hate America.

I heard Argentina is nice for such political views.

This is our fight and we are not going anywhere.

They will lose anyway this fall. Whats a few months between parties??

6. For some it is not disloyalty but economics
Lokk down the road and tell me this government will ever consider health care a right, not a privilege. Some see a bleak old age coming with dwindling assets and a non-exitant safety net. The recourse of last resort in Amerika will be prison.

7. I had this conversation with a friend-- another DUer-- last night....
Edited on Thu Feb-02-06 10:25 PM by mike_c
I'm at the point where I would leave TOMORROW if I could find an academic job in my field in one of several Central American or South American nations (those are simply my first choices). I'm not ready to give up my vocation and drive a taxi or be a janitor yet, and I'm 50 years old so being a field hand is not a realistic possibility. But what we talked about was where the boundary is that would make even becoming a taxi driver in Mexico City better than living as a professional in the U.S. The point is that such a line exists-- it just depends on each individual's circumstances.

At present I'm ashamed of America, but I'm not afraid for my IMMEDIATE future. So I'm still here- but if I could find comparable work south of the border, I'd leave tomorrow.

8. cannot afford to go anywhere
I kind of hope that the US will break up and California will become its own country. I like it here, I just don't think we are part of the US anymore (and so many would like to see CA leave the union anyway. ;)

14. Your post goes for me, too. I can't afford to leave and I love
California too much to leave. :(

If I were better-traveled and had money, I would be in a better position to make a decision. I've traveled in the US a bit and I will stick with California. One caveat: we'd have to decide what to do with the red counties. I live in a red county, but I think my fundy family would be happy to settle in Missouri. It's where my family was from originally and they're all either fundies or neocons and like country music. It's the perfect place for them and my idea of perfect hell. :D Every year I'm asked if I want to go to Missouri. Why not just ask if I'd like my toenails ripped out by the root?

20. nah, we will deal with him
I think he is on his way out anyway; I somehow get the feeling he will not get reelected after last fall's ballot measures failed. We will give him a free ticket back to Austria, and let him deal with the folks there (I gather they are not very happy with him...)

10. remember that intellectuals had to flee Nazi Germany
we are now seeing an oppression of educated and dimwits elevated to a cult status.

I believe if the fundamentalist gain a greater foot hold that there will be a silent brain drain -- Americans are already leaving. It is becoming a fact, way beyond the wishful thinking stage.

Raygun began the worshiping of the really dumb -- and bushie is on another level of dumbness/stupidity. Neither had a long range view world view -- both were (are) self centered and bigoted.

Once you go overseas and spend time with non-Americans it is really difficult to return to the States. Not that all Americans are stupid - but stepping away and looking at the US with non American really opens your eyes.

18. Israel needs someone like me!
America is insane and there is no place to hide other than Israel. I rather live in a country where people cared about their country than to live in one where the citizens are oblivious to what is going on around them.

If you really want freedom and democracy, come to Israel. We may not agree with each other, but by G-d, we do care about the fate of our country.

27. Is that why Sharon was elected?
I'm not criticizing Israel, I'm just pointing out that the government of a nation doesn't necessarily reflect its people. No country is a utopia. The US is bad, but there are still far worse places to be.

19. I am getting to the conclusion that
if 67% of this forum want to cut and run from this country, that this forum does not represent me. This poll shows that Cindy Sheehan, Howard Dean, AL Gore, the creators of this forum and everyone fighting against the current administration are waisting their time. It is not about being a patriot but about fighting for the one who cannot defend themselves.

22. My daughter won't leave, otoh
My youngest son just informed me he didn't think he wanted to raise kids in this country. My oldest son would leave in a nano-second, he may still. For me, it's all about my kids. But still, a country with a health care plan might enable me to live long enough to see my grandkids grow up, even if I couldn't see them very often. So I don't know. I have very little loyalty left to this country. I keep hoping it isn't gone or can be saved, but I just don't know anymore.

25. Yes but
it's not the politics for me it's more the quality of life. I started thinking about it long before chimp took office. I'm unhappy with the town I live in, my neighbors suck, I have no friends any longer and all my relatives are dead so there in nothing for me here any longer.

30. You're poll is missing a "Hell yes! Should have left Dec. 13, 2000"
choice. ;)

I want to leave and am working on scraping up the money to do so. That's really the only thing holding me back. I can appreciate the "stay and fight" crowd but the way I see it, as long as I'm here and paying taxes, I am, in effect, "supporting" Dubya and his cronies. As long as I pay my taxes, that's all they care about. Nothing else matters to them.
