Them Wesley Clark Dems are good folks!
This is my very first shout out to Wesley Clark supporters here on DU! Back in my Dean pimpin' days, I always appreciated the local Clark supporters. The Kerry / Dean / Kucinich camps could be tiresome with their pro war, or pro progressive, or pro reform mantras.

Local Dems that supported Lieberman, Kerry, Dean (I supported Dean, but DAMN!, my fellow Dean supporters could be... rather... harsh..at times), or Kucinich could easily wear me down. Clark supporters never did that.

So here it is, my first official shout out to Clark supporters! Check in if you did the Clarkies!

ps-shout out to Kerry / Kennedy (filibuster!)...Hillary (lock box ovation TSOTU)...Dean... Murtha (withraw!)...AND Joe Lieberman (for criticizing Bush n. co.).
pss-shout out to Toles, Boondocks, Doonesbury, Cindy Sheehan, Mike Moore, and all do-gooders (even Nader!)
psss- Shout out to DU

PEACE AND LOW STRESS!

1. SHOUT right back at cha. There were some toughies in in all camps
during the primary days. Each of us had our days where we blew our stacks.

But we MUST come together 1 and all for the sake of all that is good in the world for the 2k6 elections and the 2k8 elections.

So let's all bury the hatchets and pick up signs and leaflets!

That reminds me...how is Clark doing with the Fox viewers? I wonder if he's getting any converts.

Saw the marvelous General yesterday, here at an event in S.F.

We had some good conversations. He was very attentive and listened to all that I had to say. He is soooo very easy to talk to, and is earnestly interested in what I thought of things. I mainly talked to him about our problems with the media. He gets that all too well. He said that is partially why he chose to be on Fox. Said that the Fox Viewers need to hear the truth, even if it kills him!

FUNDAY is my annual party -- I invite all of my friends (including cyberfriends @ DU) and we drink free beer and listen to music all day.
This is the twelveth annual edition. Saginaw is a swell place and accomodations are cheap. Many DUers have attended. You should mark it on your calendar so you don't forget to attend.

We're 259 miles from Buffalo, presumably via Canada as opposed to all the way around the southern shore of Lake Erie.
Past DU attendees include the Ohio Blues from Cincinnati (last year) and Davsand from near Danville, IL (2002, 2003), It isn't unusual for other friends to come from 100 miles and more -- Detroit's well within our sphere of influence.

25. The people I met up in New Hampshire
from other candidate camps when I was up there volunteering for Clark were all good folks. On election day there were groups of us standing in front of polling stations, offerning each other coffee and the like. Made a nice bond with a Kucinich supporter while there.

When I went to Pennsylvania to help out Kerry in November, I met tons of Dean supporters doing great work for Kerry. Kerry supporters too obviously, and no doubt prior supporters of Edwards and others also, but the Dean supporters stood out. A lot of the Demos I work with locally on issues were/are Dean supporters also. It is easy to work together, we have a lot in common.

In my area there were 100's of Dean activists, Dozens of Kucinich / anti war activists, and a couple of Clark activists. Lieberman, Kerry, Edwards, and Sharpton had support, but not active supporters. Of course Kerry ultimately had the most overall support.

:yourock:

I never really got involved in politics before the last election. I met alot of really great people at the Clark meetups and house parties that I went to. Then Clark was out waaaay before I ever got a chance to vote, so I threw in with the Kucinich people. There were a whole lot great folks in that group as well. I also got to know alot of Dean people over the course of the Kerry campaign. They were some of the most dedicated and hard workers that I saw. What the hell, Dems are great people!

I definitely noticed that things out on the ground tend to be alot more civil than they often are online. I did see some bumpy moments betweent the Kerry people and the Kucinich people in my state up to the Conventions at which the delegates were elected (we got more delegates for DK in Colorado than any other state) but everybody seemed to work pretty well together once that was out of the way. I can imagine things being a good deal more stressful in the early primary states though.

Peace to you and thanks for a great thread!

and what I saw, on that beautiful warm sunny day, was an endless quiet march of people to gather for the same reason.
It was remarkable to view the growing fan club Clinton was amassing. It was born out of need to be rid of such governance of Mr GHW Bush.

This next election will be a repeat...media or no media ..it will come from the people.
This November election will also see a growing effort to end the bleeding of our American Democracy at the hands of HW's spawn..george, boy king of America.
Its time to end the Crime dynasty once and for all.

Change the shift in power in our House and Senate this November..make way for the restoration of our democracy and pray we are never so ignorant to foreign attacks through our ports, airways nor our White House.
Let the masses march again...ahhhhh yes!

I missed the primary wars here, thank goodness...but I see, I guess, the remnants that still linger. It seems there are some Dean supporters who will never forgive Clark for running or us, it seems, for asking him to...but my personal contact with Dean supporters has always been pleasant. I worked with a Dean supporter for redefeatbush after Clark dropped out and she was great, so full of positive enrgy...and recently a lot of old Clark supporters worked very closely with Dean supporters to put together a fundraiser in the city for Eric Massa...I think we're definitely better working together than at each others' throats.

So, shout out back atcha...and to good Democrats everywhere. :)

83. the ugly primaries
You know, I've been thinking about this and, being too busy during the primaries to spend basically any time here (all my time being spent working with the Draft Clark group and then the campaign office out in the real world or with Clark-centric online communities like the Clark yahoo groups and CCN), my experience, albeit quite limited, was so different. My contact with Deniacs was mostly with Dean supporters who actually came over to the Clark campaign after he announced...There were a few in our office, one of whom was really great, running the phone banks and letter writing sessions...In fact, he's the one who got me hooked up with ACT NY after the redefeatbush calling crews in Manhattan kind of disintegrated. There was the great Ex-Deaniacs for Clark site with great pages busting the most common Clark myths that were floating against him at the time. Even when I ran into some strong Dean supporters while out on the streets collecting petition signatures so that Clark could be on the NY primary ballot, they were very respectful and we parted with kind words for both Clark and Dean. Then, after Clark dropped out, I worked with the redfeatbush Deaniac and then with other Dean supporters with ACT. I'd always at least gotten the feeling that we were working together toward a common goal, getting rid of Bush whoever got the nomination and the Clark and Dean supporters seemed to be the ones with the most enthusiasm.

Granted, I remember being told during a conversation with someone who would attend local political events as the Clark representative how she would be treated sometimes with outright hostility by some of the supporters of other candidates (like they resented strongly the fact that Clark dared run...except for the Kucinich supporters who, she said, were always welcoming and kind), it wasn't just Dean supporters...and they weren't even the worst.

So, I came away from the whole experience with the feeling that, although politics is an ugly, dirty pursuit, Clark and Dean supporters had a lot more in common than not. It's a bit disconcerting to see some of the remnants of the nastiness apparently left over from the primary wars...It kind of throws me when I see things like Dean supporters claiming that they've never met anyone out in the real world who cares or knows of Clark and if they do know of him, they can't stand him...Or that everyone they meet when they're out among activists always talks of how there are never any Clark supporters out doing "work" in the real world. I don't know if they seriously mean these things or just say them to get to the Clark supporters. My experience is so different. I know so many instances of Clarkies and Deanies working together since the campaigns....

In any event, I think I'd much prefer my experience to what I would have experienced had I been here then. I can only hope that I'm too busy to witness the primary wars here next time around too.

Despite what some people would like to believe, I think there's a lot more that binds Dean and Clark supporters than pulls them apart. Oh, and I think Dean's doing a bangup job as DNC Chair, too...I just wish he'd get more support from the rest of the Party. I HATE when they all start backing away from him because he's said something confrontational...even if it is true. Bah!

Peace....

I just hope to God that we can (re)make the party in his image, while shoring up our traditional constituencies and not alienating all of the people I want in it - GLBT, blacks & browns, anti-war folks, union members, feminists, and all of the other anti-oligarchy types.

Bless Wes!

I had a very unpleasant experience here last night--I couldn't even sleep well because of it (I was accused of being a Republican!:grr:)--and so your lovely comments are particularly welcome. Not just because they make me personally feel better as one of the Clarkies you're being so sweet to, but because your open heart and generous spirit are a reminder that we really are all in this together.

71. Actually, I know that you are a Republican! So there!
I kid...out of love...
I understand the DU hatred of 'the other side', but in my real life, I work with many, many political republicans. I love chipping away at the GOP power structure, and it is such a great feeling to see someone finally "see the light". I even know a couple GOP Deadheads.

There are a lot of good republicans out there. What I like about Wes Clark is that he can talk the GOP talk without selling the Dems out. Being attractive to GOP is a good thing, outside of DU.

We ARE all in this together, including the Republicans. In the big picture, all of our "enemies" are in this together with us, as well. Let me stop now before I get religious / spiritual!

Peace and low stress! Thanks for the kind post!

I posted so that freeper would see what the rest of the world thinks of Bush. This blogger often states, "Jap is too cool to apologize for WWII crimes. Just like American too cool to apologize for Bosh." There are always return posts from Americans "I'm so sorry for Bush!" LOL! Usually there are many posters that say similar things, from all over the world.

72. No, this was a gracious thread
It was a positive gesture from one DU member toward other DU members. There are ample threads where the relative strengths and weaknesses of different potential candidates is the subject of debate. Your entering this specific thread with your comments is crass.

The back drop to this thread is the difficult period that many DU members experienced during the Primaries when hard feelings were frequently present. Since you are neither a Clark supporter, nor someone here to wish Clark supporters well, the fact that your post count is so low is highly relevant. You were not here for the hard times, you do not understand how gracious this OP was and the significance it holds for many. There is no good reason for your negative posts here.

Under the circumstances the reception you have received is "kinder" than any you have any right to expect.

if it turns out that "he doesn't have enough support in real life". You posted due to your "cult" concerns... I created this thread to shout out to the "cult". At least you recognize that Clark has supporters here. Why does his support on DU concern you?

Peace, and did you get to check out www.masamania.com ?

(Excuse me, I meant "wierd.") I wear weird/wierd vintage clothes, eat weird/wierd meatless things, make my living in weird/wierd artsy ways, etc...

But among the most UNweird/wierd things about me are my support for General Clark, AND my support for other Democratic leaders mentioned in the OP, AND my appreciation of other Democrats who support Democrats, in truthful and respectful ways, especially on DU.

Shout-outs like the OP's are important on DU. We've got competitions behind us and ahead of us, and knowing what they're like, posts like this one are MORE than welcome imho.

129. Clark!!! Be still my heart!!! I was out in my yard today,
moving around the stuff in my composter, when I had this flash....Clark is the only one I trust these days.

Why stirring my compost led to this flash of appreciation for Clark is beyond me...unless I was on a spiritual level equating with the good things compost does with the good that Clark does!!

LOL!!!

130. Can Anyone Recommend Clark's Book: " Winning Modern Wars" ?
Is it a good read? Is it Technical?

Is it something that would help persuade people to support Clark for president, or does it give a good insight to his thinking......(?)

what do Clark supporters think of this book?

132. Waging Modern War
Edited on Sun Feb-19-06 10:40 PM by Donna Zen
I had signed the draft about two weeks before I read Waging Modern War. I'd fallen asleep reading and when I woke I thought about all of the horror that is reaped upon the heads of people who run for office in America. I realized that I really liked Wes Clark as a person...a fellow human. He'd lived such a straight-arrow life, I no longer wanted him to run. I wrote and told him. As for the subject of this thread, I don't think I could ever bring myself to ask another one of America's best and brightest to run. Gert said once, "When he left the Army the only thing he had was his reputation, and now they're trying to take that." That book really gives one a good look at who he is.

Winning Modern War is good, although the first half is technical, the second half spells out what a difference Clark would make. Waging is a better book imho. Clark was said to be a very good teacher, his books are readable for even an anti-war person like me.

If I was going to ask anyone to read anything, I would chose either his 100 Year Vision, or his recent Real State of the Union speech. Or watch America's Son. <---downloadable at securingamerica. com.

133. It depends on who you're persuading...
No matter what you look at from Clark, even going back years -- speeches, testimony, articles, books, interviews, campaign materials -- you'll find he is REMARKABLY consistent. That's one of the things I really admire about him. It takes some truly creative editing and twisting to try to portray him otherwise (and there sure have been some attempts -- particularly from the RNC back in 2003-4).

One thing about Clark that Husb and I sometimes chuckle about, affectionately (I hope my fellow Clarkies will forgive this): He's something of a Nerd (who as it happened, grew handsome as he grew older). I happen to LIKE "nerds" or knowledged intellectuals -- when people called Gore a "wonk," I used to wonder why that was a perjorative?!? Clark is deeply intellectual, and his books aren't breezy reading. If someone wants a complex, in-depth view of the recent history of our engagement in the Middle East, by all means give them "Winning Modern Wars."

If someone wants to get a "sense" of him, give them some audio/video clips and/or send them to his site -- http://securingamerica.com, for recent statements, writings, interviews, etc. as well as background, biography, and other info.

What really convinced me to support Clark was a townhall forum (I think in New Hampshire) I saw on C-Span. His responses to questions reminded me of Clinton, in the sense that he didn't give a canned answer -- his mind went around a whole range of factors, outlined several possibilities, then concluded with a summary answer, telling you he didn't go on a tangent, but answered the question completely. (Much as a good college prof would do -- and he is definitely a great teacher every time he speaks, something I hold in high regard.)

Whether a short interview on Faux or a long book -- it depends more on the audience, I think. :hi:

139. We liberals are good folks.
Folks, the conservatives are wounded and running scared. Yet, we are still acting as if WE are ashamed of who we are and what we stand for. WE ARE ALL LIBERALS. I don’t care if you’re what part of the political spectrum you find yourself….”moderate,” “progressive,” “far-left,” third-party, whatever. Anyone who posts on DU as a part of this community (in other words, everyone except the trolls) is a LIBERAL by definition.

We must reclaim our heritage, and be proud of it. The conservatives have redefined the word because in it’s original, true meaning is their greatest nemesis and greatest fear…fear of enlightenment. We need to take back the power, and take back the word. “Liberal” is NOT a political platform; it’s a way of thinking, a philosophy of life, an ode to reason, and a longing for truth. It’s the only hope for the survival of the human race. We have to be very clear on this: liberals are and always have been the only hope for the survival of the human race. Only if we truly understand this truth can we transform our society and our planet. Words have power. If we run away from this word, we do more than run away from ourselves; we castrate ourselves. The term “progressive” is nothing more than a castrated, timid redefinition of who we truly are. It’s dangerous, and we ought to do away with the term except in a context defining correctly the word "liberal." If we once again embrace the word "liberal," it will tranform into a word and force more powerful than all than any of the right-wing talk-show or t.v. hosts can possible imagine. It will disarm them.

A Liberal Definition by John F. Kennedy:
Acceptance Speech of the New York ?Liberal Party Nomination
September 14, 1960

What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."

This is my political credo:
I believe in human dignity as the source of national purpose, in human liberty as the source of national action, in the human heart as the source of national compassion, and in the human mind as the source of our invention and our ideas. It is, I believe, the faith in our fellow citizens as individuals and as people that lies at the heart of the liberal faith. For liberalism is not so much a party creed or set of fixed platform promises as it is an attitude of mind and heart, a faith in man's ability through the experiences of his reason and judgment to increase for himself and his fellow men the amount of justice and freedom and brotherhood which all human life deserves.

I believe also in the United States of America, in the promise that it contains and has contained throughout our history of producing a society so abundant and creative and so free and responsible that it cannot only fulfill the aspirations of its citizens, but serve equally well as a beacon for all mankind. I do not believe in a superstate. I see no magic in tax dollars which are sent to Washington and then returned. I abhor the waste and incompetence of large-scale federal bureaucracies in this administration as well as in others. I do not favor state compulsion when voluntary individual effort can do the job and do it well. But I believe in a government which acts, which exercises its full powers and full responsibilities. Government is an art and a precious obligation; and when it has a job to do, I believe it should do it. And this requires not only great ends but that we propose concrete means of achieving them.

Our responsibility is not discharged by announcement of virtuous ends. Our responsibility is to achieve these objectives with social invention, with political skill, and executive vigor. I believe for these reasons that liberalism is our best and only hope in the world today. For the liberal society is a free society, and it is at the same time and for that reason a strong society. Its strength is drawn from the will of free people committed to great ends and peacefully striving to meet them. Only liberalism, in short, can repair our national power, restore our national purpose, and liberate our national energies. And the only basic issue in the 1960 campaign is whether our government will fall in a conservative rut and die there, or whether we will move ahead in the liberal spirit of daring, of breaking new ground, of doing in our generation what Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman and Adlai Stevenson did in their time of influence and responsibility.

http://www.liberalparty.org/JFKLPAcceptance.html

I am a liberal. We live in a liberal democracy.... You know, this country was founded on the principals of the Enlightenment.... It was the idea that people could talk, reason, have dialogue, discuss the issues. It wasn’t founded on the idea that someone would get stuck by a divine inspiration and know everything right from wrong. I mean, people who founded this country had religion, they had strong beliefs, but they believed in reason, in dialogue, in civil discourse. We can’t lose that in this country. We’ve got to get it back. -Wes Clark

Edit:

There is something else re-embracing the word will do for our nation and our world. It will help us unite. What divides us is petty; what unites us is strong. "United we stand, divided, divided we fall" is more than an old cliche.

It's the truth.

So, when in the coming months and years the "sibling rivalries" start to intensify, remember we are part of the same family, a LIBERAL family.

Thanks

140. This Wes Dem was ashamed of myself
because of my negativity towards Dean while he was running.

This was my first foray into politics, I was inspired by Wes Clark. What I didn't realize at the time, is that Dean was probably the next best (and hey, if he could have won, the best) thing going for the country. I think both men are far more alike, in terms of character, than they are different; even though they are very different men.

141. Dean was out there before Clark
Dean broke the mold as far as I was concerned. He bucked the establishment and appeared to speak from his gut, so, he was my favorite. Then Clark came on the scene and he spoke my language too. I hoped either one would get the nomination. In fact, here in Okla. it looked like Dean didn't stand a chance so I voted for Clark (that was hard as I Really liked Dean). Clark did fairly well here! What does that say for Clark? Course, Okla.??, still Clark got a good showing.
