Bono Speaks the Truth to Power - POVERTY
Bono Speaks the Truth to Power
February 3rd, 2006 @ 12:44 pm

Yesterday I posted about Bono speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington D.C. The purpose of his speech was to ask the U.S. to increase their aid to the poor.

Last night I thought to myself, that there was some sad irony in the timing of Bono’s speech, it occured the day after the House approved the Budget Bill which imposes “substantial changes on programs including Medicaid, welfare, child support and student lending.”

The Bush administration calls these programs “entitlements.” The single mother with 3 children who can’t find a job or can’t afford to pay for child care, if she does have a minimum wage job, calls these programs — sustenance. The high school graduate from a low income family, who has worked hard to maintain a high GPA, perhaps while working after school, calls student lending — opportunity for a better life. The elderly widow on disability, calls these programs — life’s blood.
