A personal thank-you note to Momcat, Wordie and everyone else

who took the trouble to put together and post Senators' contact info, Web links, etc., prior to the cloture vote. I tend to do more lurking (and occasional snarking) than IYF activism, but for the Alito nomination I had resolved to email and fax any Senators who might "need" it. Fate intervened, I came down with my first serious Winter cold, missed a couple of days of work, and fell behind on everything. I recovered enough to come in to work (no Web access at home) and as soon as I logged in to DU I saw the committee had sent the nom'n to a floor vote and thought "Oh $#!%, I missed the whole thing." But then, maybe not. Despite the DU server problems, some strange incompatibilities with my own browser and SaveTheCourt.org's Web page, a little "hardware problem" and a head filled with more mucus than brains for much of the time, there were so many options available in the various posts that I managed to get emails, at least, off to every Dem who hadn't already confirmed they would vote against cloture, a couple of R's as well, and most of the D's who had already confirmed against cloture. I don't know how much of a difference it made. I do know that doing nothing would have improved nothing. And I've saved all that info where I can get to it a little more easily next time -- I had some opportunity to think about what it would be like if I couldn't access DU, and I sometimes worry that could be made to happen.

18. good idea--i realized that i forgot to include bill nelson from

florida on my list of numbers & faxes--and it did not include most of the republicans (just snow, chafee, spector & collins...and jeffords)

oh well--i was forced to look him up when i contacted his office and just handwrote it in.

tomorrow i plan on disconnecting the fax machine. i'm headed back to work monday (i've been "on vacation" for awhile) my "fun" with these freakin senators is over. for now.

Even though we didn't win, we made quite a showing, and it was due to you folks and your efforts. I couldn't have put all that together in hours.

I really appreciate all you did to allow us to make our statement. We DID do some good, I think, even if we are still considered the left fringe.

Those are just a few that I know of, and there were many more. This was a great team effort and I was so impressed by how hard so many worked on it. We need to take that same energy and direct it toward the elections in the fall, so we don't ever again have to mobilize against a nominee like Alito!

And the biggest thanks of all should go to DU, this wonderful place where we can join forces to change things. We may not have won the Alito vote, but we learned a lot and all put forth a great effort in opposition. Without DU, that just wouldn't have been possible. Thanks DU!

A special thanks to Earl G. who heard our plea and developed the GD Alito forum and gave us a place to pin the Toolkit and other critical information. Without that special place, we would have beem hunting all over for information. As eppur_se_muova put it so well in the OP, "there were so many options available" and that is because so many people worked hard to make this happen.

I hope we can now all work together and make a permanent DU Activist Toolkit using the Alito one as a model. If anyone is interested in doing that, PM me and let me know. We will be ready to spring into action faster next time!
