GOP bigwigs open wallets for Harris
GOP bigwigs open wallets for Harris

30 members of Congress wrote checks to Harris to give her campaign a boost

By JEREMY WALLACE

jeremy.wallace@heraldtribune.com

Although U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris still badly trails Sen. Bill Nelson in campaign fund-raising, newly filed financial reports show Harris has begun to pick up support from prominent members of the U.S. Senate and Congress.

Thirty members of Congress wrote checks to Harris, a Longboat Key Republican, over the last three months of 2005 to bolster her campaign.

The donations included contributions from political action committees run by six members of Congress from Florida, plus prominent national leaders like former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott of Mississippi and House Majority Whip Roy Blunt Jr. of Missouri.

It's something of a turnaround for Harris, who for six months has been fighting the notion that national leaders aren't supportive of her candidacy.

At least two other Republicans have been courted to run against her in the primary by GOP officials like Elizabeth Dole and Gov. Jeb Bush. Two weeks ago, Bush said he would support Harris in her campaign against Nelson, a Democrat.

1. If I had the money
I'd open my wallet big for the 30 Dems who are running against these congressmen.

What does anyone see in her? She is a caracature of the stupid woman. As a woman I find women who stick out their chests, talk in little girl voices and glob on the make up insulting. I hope she loses big time.

3. She's just "touting"
Her "development" program, which she embarked upon with her local plastic surgeon.

She really needs more publicity. She is a PR train wreck waiting to happen.

6. What do they see in her? Someone who can spill the beans. Someone
with a big mouth who will spill her guts about selection 2000 if she doesn't get her way.

7. Even if she could
who would believe her? The Repugs are masters of spin and disinformation. Anything she would say would be spun as sour grapes. They did it to Richard Clarke, they did it to Joe Wilson. They would do it to little miss Harris in a heartbeat.

4. Where are these people getting that kind of money?
You know it's being laundered.

In local government, especially in one-sided party municipalities, it doesn't take much money to win an election. The Orlando Sentinel does a good job of plugging the favorite, so the average person who goes up against an incumbent is likely to lose even if he brings in his own money. But, incumbents still need money, and I once saw evidence in the city file, of the city giving a local business a $500.00 charity contribution. Just like that. When you looked back at the campaign contributions, there was the guy and his neighbor's donations to the city commissioners and their sums of money amounted to about the same.

9. And that money came from where?
That's like asking someone, why do you rob banks? And the answer is, because that's where the money is.
