1. For heaven's sakes, they're just CARTOONS. |
|
But remember, the hardline Islamics put a price on Salman Rushdie's head, too, for having the uppity-ness to write something they didn't like. Seems our extremist "religionistas" here could take a lesson. In fact, I wonder what's taken 'em so long to start down a path like this one.
In fact, as I write this, something in me wants to suspect them for burning some of their own churches. After all, it worked for Hitler when the Reichstag burned, too, didn't it? And for rove when he had his own office bugged and then held a loud, outraged press conference blaming his candidate's Democratic opponents.

How many times have Catholics and Jews been offended in this country? I say get over it and join the modern world. They are only cartoons. Geeez!
By the way, I like the "stop, stop, we're running out of virgins." Thats funny

24. Yeah, I do, too. Besides, there are a couple there that are merely |
|
symbolic - and, to me at least, completely innocuous. For example: the one where the crescent moon and star were incorporated into the face of Mohammed. Anybody know how THAT ONE is offensive?

proscriptions in the muslim religion about Graven images. (Remember the commandment?) I think a little cultural sensitivity is in need here. I doubt Christians would riot if there were nasty cartoons about Christ...but there would be an uproar.

4. One persons religion does not dictate the actions of another person. |
|
They only dictate the actions of people in that religion.
Jews can't riot because Bob Evan's sells pork.

5. They are justified in protesting or boycotting |
|
As fundie Christians do when they feel something inflames them. What they are doing, however, is trying to suppress freedom of speech with violence.
Cultural sensitivity goes both ways - fanatic Muslims need to understand that the rest of the world isn't beholden to their religious codes.

I couldn't believe it - I actually saw an LTTE that asked, "which is more important, freedom of expression or respect for religion?" And it was asked as if the answer was supposed to be "respect for religion."
Bull. Religion is for those who believe in it. Freedom of expression is a universal right. "Freedom of religion" also means freedom from religion.
Those who commit violence to avenge a drawing (!) only ridicule their own religion more than any drawing could have.

18. Exactly - they protest the depiction of their religion as violent.... |
|
..... by bombing embassies and making death threats?
I mean, does the irony completely escape them?

between uproar and threats of death, riots, etc.
But I do agree it is bad manners, but our friends the radical Muslims are going to have to grow up a bit and live in the real world where you can't always have the world YOUR way.

16. I don't want religious people proscribing what I can or cannot see, |
|
do, write, or think.
If they think the rest of the world must follow their rules, it is utter insanity.
It is rather arrogant and insensitive to think the entire world must obey your religious commandments.

Needless to say I didn't bomb anything in response.
There is not a single soul in the free world who should allow these reactionary fanatics to intimidate us.

9. And most of the cartoons |
|
are not in the least offensive as far as tone. Simply the visage of the Prophet is inflaming the radicals.

that said, we shouldn't give in to superstitious people and their customs. Their freedom to worship mythology is just as important as my right to be offensive.

21. Yeah, and there have been similar cartoons by US artists |
|
I have seen cartoons satirizing suicide bombers and jihadists in the newspaper before. Cartoons lampooning radical Islam are not new.
The only variable in this instance is the prescence of a depiction of Mohammed. They aren't offended by the content so much as the violation of Islamic law which prohibits depictions of the prophet.
Non-Muslims are not beholden to follow their religious dictats or to kowtow to their customs.

6. Well then.. maybe we should encourage American Cartoonists to |
|
Edited on Sat Feb-04-06 03:02 PM by radio4progressives
do caricatures of Falwell, Christ and the whole dominionists crowd..
i think that would be great.
what really would be funny is to see the instant reaction from the christo fascists here in this country rioting in the streets against the artists and the publishers ..
now that would put things in perspective wouldn't it?
and what about the Muslims doing caricatures of Christ and Falwell or Pat Robertson -- the Pope even. I'd love to see the reaction from the hypocritical bigots in this country.
So i encourage artists here to get going right now! and get it published!

10. But it is done all the time |
|
look at the Rolling Stone issue with West as Christ. I see cartoons of Falwell and Robertson all the time, and they deserve it, the turds. Then how about "Buddy Jesus" and Jeebus and the South Park versions of Christ? All funny as heck. And offensive to radicals. But so far no rioting in the streets.
And I seriously doubt if that if Muslim artists were involved there would be any rioting by Christo fascists. As a matter of fact, I can't really think of any Christo fascist rioting recently at all.

|
Edited on Sat Feb-04-06 03:17 PM by tatertop
These cartoons are the precise Muslim equivalent - clearly meant to be inflammatory. The authors knew exactly what the reaction would be. So why even go there? Nothing to be gained. Let us not praise hate on any level.
I clearly see a difference between insulting criminal Falwell or Pat Robertson and insulting all of Islam.

20. Western artists have viciously satirized Jesus for a long time now |
|
See, that's what happens in a free society - you are free to be as offensive as you want, and people who are offended are free to boycott and protest you.
Did Christian fundamentalists riot when "The Last Temptation of Christ" or "Life of Brian" came out? Were buildings bombed, fires set, condemnations by Presidents and members of Congress made?
No. So much for your "perspective."

17. Bush has sided with the Muslim extremists on this one... |
|
…and has publicly stated that the newspapers should never have published these cartoons.
One day someone is going to have to sit me down and explain to me what it is about religious conservatives and cartoons (anyone remember Spongebob Squarepants? How about the anti-cartoon campaign that resulted in the creation of the Comics Code Authority?).
