Why the threats against Danish cartoonists and not against Ann Coulter?

"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity"

I think statements like that are much more worthy of outrage

1. Everyone knows Annie is a figment of Rove's imagination.
Or is that vice-versa?

2. Because she just typed in words
Now if she drew a picture of herself with a strapon buggering Mohammed, she'd be a lightning rod for death threats all over the world.

5. I believe you misunderstood the poster -
he's/she's asking why the Muslims have seemingly ignored Ann Coulter. She has said many things that are worse and more insulting than the Danish cartoons.

9. There is a real lack of understanding on this issue here on DU...
Coulter's crap is horrendously offensive. So, too are the political cartoons that appear in Egyptian and other Muslim newspapers that target Israeli jews.

But, there is a difference in offending and going to the absolute core of a people's belief system and everything they hold sacred. In Islam, any depiction of Mohammed is sacreligious. We have a hard time understanding this because NOTHING in western world or even in Christianity holds that stong a taboo in terms of our core beliefs. YEs, the "Xian" rw would (and do) scream at any depiction of Christ that they find offensive, but it is not inherent in our belief systems that Christ is not to be depicted at all.

So, while we can point to lots of offensive comments, writings, cartoons on both sides, it is not the same. There is just no comparison....

And, this is especially a problem against western ideals of free expression. But, we should try to comprehend what is behind the outrage...

Many Muslims do know of Miss Hateful, and write her off as a Bush minion.

21. LOL - everyone knows that.
It's just that one wonders why she has not been targeted for the horrible things she says and others HAVE been targeted for the things they draw. I guess it's true - a picture IS worth 1000 words.

11. Two reasons.
The cartoons violate a fundamental principle of Islam, which is that human beings are not to be depicted in any form. In some sects, this is relaxed, but even there the depiction of Mohammed is forbidden. When his figure is shown, or the figure of some other very holy person, the face is veiled.

Beyond that, though, the cartoons are for the most part hateful and bigoted. The worst is the one with the statement of belief combined with a bomb on Mohammed's turban; not far behind it is the use of the crescent moon to give him devil's horns.

Ann Coulter--no one knows about her who doesn't read or view the right-wing/MS American media. Elsewhere she's a complete non-entity.

I think statements like that are much more worthy of outrage

"invade their countries" --> Are you sure these words won't gratify those who are trying to recruit insurgents?

"kill their leaders" --> Are you sure these words won't provoke applause?

"convert them to Christianity" --> Are you sure these words won't provoke amusement?

16. The Muslims are probably awaiting results from tests to determine
whether to punish it as a man, or a woman. If neither, they're probably consulting their religious leaders to decide what it would be . . .

20. Oh come on you guys
Coulter was just an example. Many right wing radio talk hosts with substantial audiences have made extremely offensive comments about Islam, with absolutely no response. Why are Danish cartoonists threatened with beheading and not Rush, Hannity, Coulter, and Savage?

Does none of their blather filter through to the Islamic population of other countries?

Do they not care?

Is something else pushing the issue with the Danish cartoons?

What about the christian extremist statements about Mohammed being a pedophile? Why doesn't that provoke violent mobs?

Some of us took the opportunity for Coulter-bashing - hard to resist! - and left your larger point unaddressed.

I agree there has to be something else at work in the dynamic of the cartoon issue. As to what that might be, I have no theories. Just a vague feeling that Iran is part of the equation.

ON EDIT: I don't necessarily mean Iran itself as much as the BFEE's intentions toward Iran.
