Dean in VT today, at AUW convention tomorrow, fundraiser with GLBT later

Tomorrow Dean, Clinton, and Bayh, among others will speak at the UAW convention in DC.

United Auto Workers president Ron Gettelfinger told about 1,600 union political activists yesterday that the union had "no choice but to dig in for the fight" for a better legislative agenda amid rising health care costs, troubling trade policies and job cuts.
"We cannot sugarcoat what we're facing as working people and as a nation. These are very serious times and it is time for us to take very serious actions," Gettelfinger said. "If we don't stand up, who will?"
His address, opening the union's four-day conference, comes at a difficult time for an industry struggling under intense competition in the North America market and rising costs for labor and raw materials.
Delphi Corp., GM's former parts division, filed for bankruptcy last fall and is seeking steep wage cuts from workers. GM and Ford have outlined restructuring plans that will eliminate at least 64,000 jobs in the next six years.

Union members are expected to hear this week from Democratic Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Evan Bayh of Indiana, both potential presidential candidates in 2008, and Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean.

And tomorrow night, in spite of the posts here saying he is not supporting the GLBT community....he and Jesse Jackson Jr. have a fundraiser with that community tomorrow night. Of course one magazine (the one that hired Jeff Gannon on) says to protest that event. Protest your own fundraiser? Makes no sense.

At least that is the way I read it. Sounds interesting.

"As DNC chairman, I very proud to do this," says Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Howard Dean was Vermont's governor when he signed into a law a bill aimed at reforming how campaigns are financed.

The law was immediately challenged in court. After an eight year legal battle, the highest court in the land, the United States Supreme Court will hear the case at the of the month. The National Democratic Party thru Dean is getting behind the Vermont law.

"I think it is time that political parties stand up for real campaign finance reform," says Dean."

7. DNC will file a "friend of the court" brief in support of this bill.

"BURLINGTON, Vt. -- In an effort to get the "dirty money out of politics," the Democratic National Committee will ask the U.S. Supreme Court this month to allow states to limit how much is spent on campaigns.

Howard Dean, the chairman of the Democratic Party, announced Monday that the party will file a friend of the court brief with the Supreme Court in support of Vermont's 1997 campaign finance law.

"I feel very, very strongly that the Democratic Party, in this era of this Republican culture of corruption, has to walk the walk and not just talk the talk," said Dean.

"The Democratic Party of the United States has an opportunity to actually do something," said Dean. "I thought it would be hypocritical to be pilloring the Republican Party for their corruption when this opportunity was coming before the Supreme Court."

8. Dean has made a big statement about campaign finance reform....

in having the DNC file this friend of the court brief. I notice it is getting ignored in the media, though if it makes it through the court after all these years...it might affect other states.

I read at the DNC blog just now that he is getting criticized by the party about this.

It is an important statement really, and it is being ignored except by VT papers.
