1. Susan Smith?
That's a little chilling. What she did was awful, but there were only two people killed.

Not that that wasn't horrific enough.

3. "All time" is something of a misnomer
everyone on the list is from the 20th or 21st century (where's Tamerlane, for instance)?

Not even Medea, in the mothers killing their children dept. Maybe they know that American's sense of history doesn't extend past the last few decades.

I voted for Hitler by the way. Much as I despise GWB, he hasn't yet reached that level, though I don't think he'd be incapable of it given the right circumstances.

As % of world's population he killed. Did not like cities, except his own.

7. Stalin said, "One death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic."
As much as I despise george bush, I'm not going to (at this time) put him on the same level as Hitler and Stalin. But let me add that I think he is cut from the same cloth and I do not think his character is any better than those two men, simply that our social structure will not allow him to act in the same manner as they did. There is no doubt in my mind that the basic character of george w. bush will act to the limits of tyranny that whatever country in which he lives and operates would allow him to act.

11. Ditto
The thing that * lacks is opportunity, but thus far he hasn't pulled a stalin, hitler, or pol pot.

But if you count the Iraqui civilians, New Orleans, 911, and other assorted victims--he's a mass murderer by stupidity.

17. Hitler.
But of course, we can retroactively judge Hitler now. Who knows how this poll would read 50 years from now, or perhaps even 10 or 20.

Come on. I hate * with the heat of a thousand burning suns, but let's get real, here: Hitler and Stalin should be winning this poll hands down. How crazy will we look if we pimp Bush to the top???

10. all are recent, true
but one could argue from a moral evolution stance that GWB has to be the worst since he has had the benefit of hindsight. Society has looked back on all the previous murderous regimes and individuals and deemed them horrid. We have seen the impact of numerous optional wars and deemed them bad. That Bush has cavalierly tossed those philosophical advances to waste places him very high on the list.

May he be remembered by history in the same breathe as a Hitler.

13. What a repulsive little poll.
To the murdered, their persecutors are the worst of all time. For Cambodians, it's Pol Pot. For Jews, Hitler. For millions of others, it's Stalin. God I hate polls like these.

19. You're about to be
the recipient of my pent up ire. Could your response to what I wrote be any more inane? You had to turn this into an anti-american polemic. I was speaking outside of politics. How can anybody be so obtuse? Did I excuse American Presidents or actions? No, but you couldn't bear to let even my rather apolitical post go. Nooo, you had to jump in and make sure you got in your america-is -the- evilest -of -all assertions into the mix. I particularly love the roundabout way that America is to blame for the East Timorese massacres because of favored trade partner status with America. Now, go ahead and call me an imperialistic blah, blah, blah, apologist. Wrong. I condemn plenty about American foreign policy both past and present. But to date, Stalin and Hitler and yes even Pol Pot make Americans look like pikers. This inability of adherents to a far left or far right policy, to use perspective, is a fucking sad statement on human nature.

21. ONLY the U.S. furnished helicopters and M16's to Indonesia, and bought
the most exports from Indonesia, 2nd only to China.
BUT the U.S. could have called off the slaughter with a WORD from our government...which never happend thus making U.S. a culpable enabler financially and politically in that region.
Pikers have condemned an ENTIRE RACE OF AMERICAN NATIVES to hundreds of years of living under occupation. Just get real, DUer, with how dirty OUR HOUSE IS, before or even ALONGSIDE or even in acknowlege of our own past history. Why shy away from who we really are, it's the only path to liberation and I might venture "reconciliation".
Oh, YOU said "evilest", not me, because that would be quite an oversight. this time I didn't do it.
It was like that when I got here. It's not my fault. Cheers we probably agree on more than not, sorry for infringing on your blog. won't do it again.

23. Agreed.
Of course, I have to believe that many people take into account the worldwide deaths that have happened as a result of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. But even so, the genocide of millions of people in a calculated and deliberate way is much worse than anything Bush has done.

He's still no angel however.

31. that's good reminder, still the 500,000 dying from sanctions is too recent
and the U.S. could help fix now, with reparations and by leaving w/o our OIL Industry usurping their national right to resources. this opportunity has escaped our attention in any significant dialog, yet the price in lives of our enlisted military and the Iraqi civilians and invasion defense forces grows.
