Jack Carter, son of president, running for Senate in Nevada.
Now that is a bloodline that might also have a future! Jack was always very intelligent. Now he is after John Ensign's Senate seat!

"The singular difference between the junior senator and me is he works for the Bush administration and I want to work for Nevada," Carter said at a union hall outside Las Vegas, accompanied by his parents, former President Carter and first lady Rosalynn Carter.
"Common sense, honesty, integrity and a desire for good government. These are our American values," he said.

3. He is kind of a carpetbagger...
He only moved to Nevada in 2002, I don't see how he could have absorbed the political spirit of the state yet.

Then again, If NY elected Hilary, anything can happen!

4. Hey, New York elected Bobby Kennedy...
....Texas elected Dick Armey, from Georgia....and George W. Bush from Connecticut....and George H.W. Bush to Congress and he was from Maine. McCain isn't an Arizona native....lol....Hell, I'd take Carter, Hillary, or Bobby over any of those....

5. Most of them were there longer than three or four years.
Of course, Hillary was just barely a New Yorker.

His point is that it usually takes more than three years to learn the people of a state. He did NOT say that you had to be born there. That is your own gross exaggeration on what he actually said.

15. Close to 1/4 of Nevadans did not live there 10 years ago
it's a state filled with people who moved from other states. Carpetbagging is probably a Minor issue there compared to let's say, North Dakota.

24. I'm certain he is a wonderful candidate
I'm certain Carter is a great person.

I lived in Nevada for 22 years, split between Clark and Washoe counties. I've spent a fair bit of time in Carson City and Humboldt, Pershing, Nye and White Pine counties.

I think that when Hillary went to New York, it was easy for her to represent the interests of her constituents. I think Nevada politics are a bit unique. I think Nevada (outside of Las Vegas) holds on to the frontier spirit more than most states.

All I'm saying about Carter is that I wonder if he has been there long enough to absorb the "spirit" of Nevada. You know, the whole "Home means the sage and the pine" stuff. I'm afraid that if he has spent all his time in Vegas, he might have a stilted view of what Nevada is about.

I never said I wouldn't support him, I just question if he can really represent the interests of ALL his constituents.

26. I can understand your concerns and it should be something
Edited on Wed Feb-08-06 01:31 PM by ISUGRADIA
he should be able to answer to when questioned. But in Nevada electoral politics Clark and Washoe counties are the ones where Carter will need to appeal too. He has to pay lip service to the rural counties but any real effort there is a waste for a Democrat.

27. True, but a little sad...
It is true that in Nevada state politics, Clark County is the Dog, Washoe County is the Tail, and all the rest are fleas.

I think that is a little sad; the "Spirit of Nevada" is best seen outside of Las Vegas and Reno. Some may doubt me, but I beleive that rural Nevadans are among the most tolerant people I've met. I think it comes from the "you mind your business and I'll mind mine" philosophy.

Best of luck to Carter...

23. A large proportion of Nevadans are not originally from the state
As long as it doesn't appear that he moved to the state for the purpose of running for office, this won't likely be an issue.

19. I was hoping Oscar Goodman would run for governor
He would have pulled a huge number out of southern Nevada and that would have been enough against Jim Gibbons. Now it will either be Jim Gibson or Dina Titus against Gibbons, meaning we still have a good chance but Gibbons is the favorite. Recent polls give him about a 5 point lead over either Democratic contender.

Jack Carter won't win but at least he's a decent candidate and we're not conceding the race, which it looked like before Carter jumped in. You need at least a semi- competitive senate race since every other major statewide race will be on the ballot. Ensign is a pathetic senator but much less vulnerable than Democratic websites generally believe. Ensign is from southern Nevada so he cuts the typical big Democratic number in the Las Vegas area. Remember, he came within 400 votes and a statewide hand recount of ousting Harry Reid in '98.

.....and extremely righteous....the Carter's are really good people. I campaigned in Texas in 1976 for Jimmy Carter. Wore out 3 pairs of walking shoes. I had breakfast with him one Saturday morning...it was great. Just me, Jimmy Carter, and about 500 other people!

20. Saw Sen. Ensign Tuesday in committee trying to look intelligent
OMG! He had his hair gelled, desperately trying to look "younger," the way middle-aged guys do when they have a younger girlfriend who is helping them try to look younger.

I noticed the young woman behind him was trying hard to look intently supportive, but was conscious of her presence on camera behind him.

He literally stumbled through his bad attempts at questioning/speechifying. His face and lack of focus gave the appearance of one who was far into the bottle late the night before.

Maybe Carter will kick his ass.
