MSNBC: "Reverence tinged with politics."
King funeral: Reverence tinged with politics
Thousands mourn civil rights leader; eulogies raise current controversies

In eulogies that praised the civil rights legacy of Coretta and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., some speakers took political jabs at the Bush administration and sparked peals of laughter.

At one point, the event seemed more political theater than a funeral service, with speakers such as former President Jimmy Carter, Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., the Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery and poet Angelou all critical of the current administration's policies.

Critics cited continuing racial problems, the lack of peace in the world, the war in Iraq and hinted at the controversy over the White House's secret eavesdropping program, the subject of bitter debate in Washington.

Like speakers before him, former President Bill Clinton reminded those attending that the work the Kings set out to accomplish is not complete. "What are we going to do for the rest of our lives?" he asked, urging others to follow in the footsteps of the Kings.

2. And the problem with the speakers is...
Seems exactly befitting a woman who wanted peace and prosperity.

I would not have allowed chimpy into the funeral... or poppy for that matter. But I'm like that, I don't care what is expected. If I don't want you there, you ain't comin'!

3. Completely appropriate.
King's life was dedicated to justice. * knows nothing about justice.

4. " hinted at the controversy over the WH's secret eavesdropping program"
Carter gave one of the most overt "hints" I've ever heard. He talked about how the civil rights struggle wasn't over, and mentioned the color of the faces we saw in Louisiana and Missisippi, and THEN he talked about how MLK and Coretta King had been subject to government surveillance themselves, and other government harrassment.

Hints? I don't think so.

I personally think that Coretta King, from what I understand of her, would have thoroughly approved. MSNBC calls it "politics" but it was about justice.

standing ovation."
