Democrats in Two Southern States Push Bills on Bible Study! DLC!

"Democrats in Two Southern States Push Bills on Bible Study
January 27, 2006

"WASHINGTON, Jan. 26 — Democrats in Georgia and Alabama, borrowing an idea usually advanced by conservative Republicans, are promoting Bible classes in the public schools. Their Republican opponents are in turn denouncing them as 'pharisees,' a favorite term of liberals for politicians who exploit religion.

"Democrats in both states have introduced bills authorizing school districts to teach courses modeled after a new textbook, 'The Bible and Its Influence.' It was produced by the nonpartisan, ecumenical Bible Literacy Project and provides an assessment of the Bible's impact on history, literature and art that is academic and detached, if largely laudatory.

"The Democrats who introduced the bills said they hoped to compete with Republicans for conservative Christian voters. 'Rather than sitting back on our heels and then being knocked in our face, we are going to respond in a thoughtful way,' said Kasim Reed, a Georgia state senator from Atlanta and one of the sponsors of the bill. 'We are not going to give away the South anymore because we are unwilling to talk about our faith.'

"In Georgia, the proposal marked a new course for the Democratic Party. The state's Democrats, including some sponsors of the bill, opposed a Republican proposal a few years ago to authorize the teaching of a different Bible course, which used a translation of the Scriptures as its text, calling it an inappropriate endorsement of religion. The sponsors say they are introducing their Bible measure now partly to pre-empt a potential Republican proposal seeking to display the Ten Commandments in schools.

..."

Hey, I have a great idea!

Let's all register as Republicans, join PNAC, and do as Republicans do!

Then we can win elections and do the same thing they are doing!

Great idea, eh?

I know it's already been done to the Democratic Party, though most registered Democrats don't know it!

6. I'd be against teaching religion in school
but if they're talking about a comparative religion course where people learn about a number of religions along with their basic tenents then that would be ok. It would be hard to prevent fundimentalist teachers from turning it into a bible study course though.

29. Could we manage
to find a way to teach school in religion?

Wow, turnabout is fair play.

I want to get education into a religious context.

When a minister or priest wants to teach creation, it only makes sense to have a bona fide scientist come in and present the empirical evidence that contradicts that perspective.

Oh, wait! That is what we have to do AFTER we are in the full brunt of the Theocracy that DU'ers still deny as Bush's Rule lays all of our false assumptions down before his own idea of the Lord.

Sorry! This is a pre-emptive strike. You are all still playing politic as usual while you struggle to push away the new paradigm.

17. The text itself is more important than who is promoting it.
The advertising industry is well aware that "testimonials" (appeal to authority/celebrity) convince consumers to buy something in lieu of actual data relevant to the product.

5. I have to disagree.
Teaching the bible as literature and in its historical context is vastly different from studying it as literal truth. It will get many of these kids thinking about all kinds of things that they probably haven't before.

It's like a fire break for conservative fundamentalism, and it speaks to the values of the bible belt. Something that democrats don't do very well. If they manage it well, it may not be a bad idea.

15. Yes, this is indoctrination disguised as education, a al Int. Design.
This is NOT the Bible as literature.
It's being sold as The Bible as Lit, but a case has not been made that the product delivers on the promises of the commercial.
To be clear, I think the Bible as Lit is fine.
This is not the Bible as Lit.
This is THE POSITIVE SPIN ON THE BIBLE'S INFLUENCE
As such, it is bullshit.

63. Do you prefer the curriculum already being used in Public Schools?
The existing curriculum, from the National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools, has a more specific Right Wing Religious slant. Recently, the Odessa, Texas, school district debated which curriculum to adopt.

The Texas Freedom Network, which commissioned its study after the vote in Odessa, is sharp in its criticism. "As many as 52 Texas public school districts and 1,000 high schools across the country are using an aggressively marketed, blatantly sectarian Bible curriculum that interferes with the freedom of all families to pass on their own religious values to their children," it said.

In one teaching unit, students are told, "Throughout most of the last 2,000 years, the majority of men living in the Western world have accepted the statements of the Scriptures as genuine." The words are taken from the Web site of Grant R. Jeffrey Ministries' Prophecy on Line.

The national council's efforts are endorsed by the Center for Reclaiming America, Phyllis Schlafly's group the Eagle Forum, Concerned Women for America and the Family Research Council, among others....

The course's broad statements about the Bible being the blueprint for the nation are askew, said Mr. Haynes of the Freedom Forum, part of a nonpartisan ecumenical group promoting the Bible Literacy Project textbook. "If the Bible is a blueprint for the Constitution," he said, "I guess they haven't read it," referring to the Constitution.....

Tracey Kiesling, the national council's national teacher trainer, said the course offered "scientific documentation" on the flood and cites as a scientific authority Carl Baugh, described by Mrs. Kiesling as "an internationally known creation scientist who founded the Creation Evidence Museum in Glen Rose, Tex."

http://www.theocracywatch.org/schools_bible_study_times_aug1_05.htm

Odessa picked the National Council's version.

If it were up to me, The Bible could only be taught in a comprehensive comparative religion class. But the National Council's course is already being used. The Democrats are just suggesting a less loathsome alternative.

How the Bible was used by the European Religious Community to Justify Looking the Other Way While Jews Were Being Carted Off to Death Camps (they don't believe in JAYSUS!)

Sorry, if people don't see this as a fundie back door, they're not paying attention. And since when is teaching only the positive side of anything considered a valid education?

Science is characterized by the prevailing paradigm, and some theorize that our understanding of math only reflects what we need it to be--like different logics. Everything has a point of view. The question is just which one we are getting.

39. Torah is generally
defined as the first five books of the old testament. The TANAKH is more like the Jewish bible, and is what many protestants refer to as the old testament. Although I think that the translation is an important factor, because some translations are skewed or just bad.

The Koran is a whole other ball of wax. Although it is based on the religions of the book, i.e. Judaism and Christianity, so knowledge of the bible, I am told, has value in the study of Islam.

105. Nice phony veil of victimization. Too bad your analogy is Orwellian.
McCarthy conducted a communist cleansing.

Anti-DLC'ers are trying to conduct a corporate cleansing, especially a cleansing of the neoconservative intellectual capital and corporate money that the DLC was born of and raised on.

In the beginning the DLC was funded by and developed by ... fruit of the poison tree.

No matter how hard you hide behind a false analogy, no matter how many times you repeat the false analogy, no matter how many times you respond to charges against the DLC by putting forth this false analogy, the Joe McCarthy analogy will never apply to the DLC, except that you keep falsely invoking it.

Congress will never hold hearings on the DLC. A US Senator will never elevate the DLC to such infamous distinction on the floor of the US Senate. DLC-ism will not spread like wildfire throughout this nation.

Maybe you need a new analogy?

Perhaps a picture of a witch being burned on a stake?

A witch hunt?

120. "Tailgunner Joe." Orwellian analogy?
http://www.vernonjohns.org/snuffy1186/tailgunr.html

"Sen. Joseph McCarthy and the Red Scare of the 1950s."

Is the idea is to portray the DLC as the victim of a wrongful attack on the scale of the Joe McCarthy communist hunt?

Have you seen, heard, or in any way come across any actions by a US Senator that frame the DLC in the same context that Joe McCarthy framed the communist influence on the Untied States?

Of course not!

Have you seen, heard, or in any way come across any US Senate or US House of Representative hearings that specifically seek to identify the DLC'ers in this country in order to eradicate them?

Of course not!

Sorry, Joe McCarthy had nothing to do with rooting out right-wing corporate neoconservative influence over the US Government, though this country would have been a better place if he had!

Communist and right-wing corporate neoconservative influence over the US Government and this nation are not related at all, except in that they are routinely invoked in false analogies.

These political and economic entities result in opposite effects: Communism and totalitarianism.

No US Senator will use their power to bring the DLC, corporations, neoconservative foundations and think tanks, or individuals that are supportive of the DLC to their knees on the floor of the US Senate.

To suggest this is so is PURE nonsense.

No US Senator will conduct a DLC hunt like Joe McCarthy did in hunting down alleged Communists in this nation.

To suggest that there should be concern that the DLC or its advocates or supporters will become victimized by this type of action is PURE nonsense.

The DLC is not the victim that DLC advocates and supporters portray it as.

Instead, this analogy is Orwellian, because it is exactly the opposite of the truth.

In fact, it kind of reminds me of a lot of the Republican use of Orwellian expressions in recent times, though I am not trying to state that the DLC advocates and supporters that invoke this false analogy are Republicans.

No, I would never do that!

75. I claim your contention about the OP is a straw man
Edited on Wed Feb-08-06 05:16 PM by Moochy
specifically, that you claim the OP is saying that the bill is a "DLC bill" is a straw man.

You asked a civil question, about the bills sponsors, and I replied after searching the article for who was quoted, and I found one. I allege no nefarious 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon, links between the bill and the DLC.

Once confronted with this answer, you and your cohorts seemed to ignore it, as usual, and went on to pat each other on the back and throw smears around.

Particularly ironic since both of you tend toward anti-left witch hunt modalities like McCarthy did, you red-bait constantly and claim to speak for the middle.

"dung" ? I know that wolves are fecally fixated but c'mon, lets rise above our base natures mkay wolfie?

I'll give you that point, perhaps constantly was an overstatement, for you at least.

And regarding our conflicting claims, then lets' agree to disagree, or wait for Free the Press to return and clarify. But I read nothing that spells out the explicit link you claim that the OP is making.
Certainly it may be implied, but I'll wait for clarification.

And reading Bridget's post about the current curriculm's reputation, it does shed an intersting light on the motivation for the bill. ie. replacing a bad book with a more objective one.

Who is claiming that the article is a DLC article? You always kick up dust like this, with an apparently rhetoricical question, but it betrays your (intentionally?) muddled thinking.

As if, to throw out the false assertion, that the OP is not making btw, tht the NYT must be controlled by organziation X in order to publish an article about a bill, from a politician with ties to organization X.

But you'll ignore this thread since it points out yer stinkin thinkin. Have a nice day! :hi:

Who is claiming that the article is a DLC article?

The OP, by posting the link to the reprint on a DLC website and not posting the link to the original source. That, combined with associating the point of the article with the DLC, shows the OP is trying to create a relationship between the two where none exists.

If the OP, by putting "DLC" in the OP's title, wants to make say the point of the article is DLC because it appears on a DLC website, surely that would also make the NY Times part of the grand DLC conspiracy by printing it as well.

But you'll ignore this thread since it points out yer stinkin thinkin. Have a nice day!

No, he's saying that because a state level politician in one state, who is a member of the DLC, is backing the bill, it is a DLC bill.

If not, he could have just left "DLC" out if it.

We would have seen a discussion of the merits (or non merits) of the bill (like what Magistrate did, for example)

Instead, he tried to pin the bill on the DLC.

121. The DLC chameleon: Progressive, Moderate, Centrist, & Conservative!
All at the same time, depending on who is framing the propaganda for you.

Also, the money and neoconservative intellectual capital used to create the DLC and to sustain it, are not actually real, because they are not proven to be directly linked to the DLC.

Of course the DLC and its supportive organizations, the Progressive Policy Institute and the Third Way, are neither required to nor do completely open their books and organizational details to the general public.

That would only allow the average American to find out who and what the DLC actually represents.

Anyone have any links to the number of Americans who are members of the DLC?

The number of Registered Democrats?

Anyone have any links to the number of Americans who actually know what the DLC is or what it does?

The number of Registered Democrats?

Anyone have any links to DLC offices in the 50 states, and each of their major cities, the telephone and fax numbers of these offices, and the contact names of the DLC officials at these offices for average Americans to communicate with?

Anyone have the links to DLC documents that explain whether the average American or Democratic Party registered member is able to affect the policies of or the processes of the DLC, and how?

Anyone have any links that detail the democratic processes of the DLC and enable it to function as a Democratic organization for Registered Democrats?

I guess not.

43. The Bible is already being taught in the Public Schools.
Edited on Wed Feb-08-06 08:45 AM by Bridget Burke
The text the Democrats are recommending is much better than the one already in use. The most popular text comes from The National Council on Bible Curriculum in the Public Schools. Check out their links page:

www.bibleinschools.net/

Doctor Mark Chancey of Southern Methodist University critiqued the NCBCPS text for the Texas Freedom Network:

Dr. Chancey’s report reveals a curriculum with a clear sectarian bias that begins with the NCBCPS’s founder and its advisers and finds repeated expression in the pages of the textbook.....

* The NCBCPS curriculum goes beyond a study of the Bible as literature or a description of the importance of the Bible for beliefs and practices of religious groups. It, in fact, improperly endorses the Bible as the “Word of God.” It also attempts to persuade teachers and students to adopt views of the Bible that are common in some conservative Protestant circles but rejected by most scholars. While such views are certainly appropriate for individuals or religious groups, public schools should not present them as fact.

* The curriculum almost exclusively reflects views held by certain conservative Protestant groups. The role of the Bible in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christian thought receives little attention.

* The curriculum depicts the United States as a historically Christian nation. It even erroneously implies that historians generally believe that the Bible, even more than the Constitution, is the nation’s “Founding Document.

Dr. Chancey’s report finds that shoddy research, factual errors, and problems with sourcing material also make the curriculum inappropriate for use in any classroom.

www.tfn.org/religiousfreedom/biblecurriculum/execsummary/

The Bible Literacy Project's text is more even-handed. If I were Empress, I'd ensure that Public Schools had all their other needs met before teaching The Bible, even as an elective. Then I'd include The Bible in a curriculum inspired by the works of Joseph Campbell.

But I'm not Empress. The Democrats are at least trying to get the less pernicious text into the schools--to replace the one already in use.

In that regard, you are totally ignorant and off base. I consider that an ad hominem that is totally irrelevant to this discussion.
If there was a class on PNAC, would you prefer a text produced by Wolfowitz and Halliburton, or by Kucinich and Dean?

To answer your question anyway, umm errr, how about THE BIBLE!?
The actual Bible would be my preference to these two apologetic marketing tools.

Alternatively, there's this:

What are good classroom resources for teaching about religion?

Teaching about religion in the public schools requires that sound academic resources be made readily available to classroom teachers. Fortunately, good classroom resources, especially in the social studies, are now available for helping teachers integrate appropriate study about religion. Two recent publications are examples of what is now available for study about religion in a secondary school classroom:

Religion in American Life is a 17-volume series written by leading scholars for young readers. Published by Oxford University Press, the series includes three chronological volumes on the religious history of the U.S., nine volumes covering significant religious groups (Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Orthodox Christians, Mormons, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Native Americans and others), and four volumes addressing specific topics of special importance for understanding the role of religion in American life (women and religion, church-state issues, African-American religion, and immigration). (For more information about the Oxford University Press series, call 800/451-7556.)

Columbia University Press has published a CD-ROM called “On Common Ground: World Religions in America.” This multimedia resource uses text, primary sources, photographs, music, film, and the spoken word to bring alive the extraordinary religious diversity in the United States. Fifteen religions in various regions of America are represented, from the long-established Christian, Jewish, and Native American traditions to the more recent arrivals such as Hinduism and Buddhism.

Maybe we wouldn't be were we are today if people were given a broader perspective on the Bible than the one from Falwell's pulpit. go ahead and mention it in the context of a sociology class where students discuss the group behavior but i don't want public school to be studying any kind of religious teaching. forget it.

catholic? kids go to public school? take a ccd class one afternoon a week. i'm sure there are other types of programs for kids in other religions. but no studying religion in public school--doesn't matter what the context.

i have a problem with schools allowing prayer groups for students in the morning. it doesn't matter that it is student requested, student run (there has to be a faculty member present so forget it!)

i can't stress it enough: slippery slope.

It's total spin, but slickly done to fool most people. Think Karl Rove.
