Who is the most obscure senator?
I would say Jeff Bingaman, D-N. Mex. He's been there 24 years and today is the first time I ever saw him mentioned in a newspaper. It was a New York Times article about evangelicals and global warming. Can't remember ever seeing him on TV, can't think of a law he sponsored. Anyone else got a candidate?

I'd say Mike Crapo of Idaho is the most obscure Republican. I'd try to keep a low profile I had that name, too.

25. Nahh...I'm a bit of a freak actually...
I used to be an Elevator operator in the Capitol. We had to memorize all of the senators (this was in the early 80's). Ever since then I have been able to name every Senator by heart. Weird and useless I know!

31. You're not a freak. Many people are familiar with Oregon's politicians.
Especially the neoconservatives, for various reasons.

I'm sure no one is trying to offend Oregonians, those of us who read real news and follow which senators are and are not nationally recognized by anyone, but--too late.

30. Senator Inoyhe? or Senator Akaka? Or Both?
I remember Senator Inoyhe from the days of Iran Contra, I think he used to sit on the Judicial hearings too during the Borking and Antia Hill? i can't remember, but lately I rarely if ever see him - and even more rare do i see Senator Akaka.

They both voted FOR ClOTURE in Alito, I think they must have done that by way of proxy, because I haven't seen either one of them since this session began.

28. Nuttier than a squirrel turd. He's kept away from cameras for good reason
<snip>

Erratic behavior during 2004 reelection bid

During Bunning's reelection bid in 2004, controversy erupted when Bunning described Mongiardo {his 2004 opponent - sd} as looking "like one of Saddam Hussein's sons." Public distaste compelled him to apologize. Other behavior, including accusing Mongiardo of physically assaulting Bunning's wife—claiming that his wife was left "black and blue"—and the use of a teleprompter during a televised debate caused several media analysts to question Bunning's mental state. Bunning set unprecedented conditions on the debate: he refused to appear in person but instead was televised from the Republican national headquarters (claiming that votes in the Senate required him to be in Washington, when in actuality the Senate was not in session); he refused to allow an independent observer in the room with him; he insisted that no portion of any recording of his performance could be rebroadcast; he insisted that the debate be broadcast live in the afternoon instead of the customary prime time hours; and other conditions. After the debate, the state's two largest newspapers, the Louisville Courier-Journal and Lexington Herald-Leader, both called for Bunning to step down.

What's that guys name, Lamar Alexander? Never heard of the guy...

And Steven's sidekick in Alaska, Lisa Murkowski. I never heard of her either.

Dem side, hmmmmmmmmm, Herb Kohl was new to me although I think he has more name recognition. Both of the Senators from Maryland, Paul Sarbanes and Barbara Mikulski. I never heard of those two.

as Crazy Guggenheim and others have suggested. That's not to say I don't like him. I do. He writes back when I send letters, even though I'm not even a resident of Hawi'i.

But he does not enjoy a powerful profile in Washington and almost no one else has ever heard of him.

47. It's probably different for everyone
depending on which state they're from. Many (possibly most) Americans wouldn't b able to name their own state's senators.

But certain senators certainly are publicity hounds. Biden and Orrin Hatch both love cameras. Lieberman and Kerry are well known for being on national tickets.

For me the most obscure senators are those from Wyoming and the "other guy" from Idaho (I know Crapo is one), Utah (know Hatch forgot the other), Montana (Baucus but forget the other)...

There's a few other states' senators I forget. I know all the more recently elected senators since I started paying attention to senate races...
