2008 Democratic National Convention (August 25 --> August 28, 2008)

So far, the three (known) cities that have submitted applications to host the 2008 Democratic Convention are:

Denver, Orlando, and Detroit.

According to a site that follows the convention bidding process, the deadline to request for the invitation to bid was on Friday, January 13, 2006. The site doesn't know the final tally.. (Howard Dean hasn't released the info) - but they know about Denver, Orlando and Detroit because they've been fairly vocal. http://demconwatch.blogspot.com/

2008 Democratic National Convention Timeline

~ January 13, 2006: Deadline for cities to respond to an invitation to bid for the 2008 Convention

~ February 2006: A formal Request for Proposal (RFP), containing detailed specifications for hosting the 2008 Convention, is sent to interested cities

~ May 2006: Deadline for interested cities to submit formal responses to the RFP

~ Summer 2006: Site visits

~ Late summer 2006: Finalists named

~ Late Fall 2006/Winter 2007: Announcement of 2008 Convention Host City

54. I'm going to say "NO" to New Orleans and here's why

because all of us were disgusted with how Bush used NYC to capitalized on 9/11 and even going so far as to delay the start of the convention as late as possible so it would be as close to 9/11.

I want to try and give as much business and as much hope to New Orleans as feasibly possible. But I don't want to use the city for political gains like the repukes did for NYC.

I'm wondering why our bidding process is done so soon? If you look at the info about the R's, they just finalized their "convention selection committee" and haven't mentioned anything about deadlines..

Colorado is an emerging swing state. Although the conventions generally don't make a difference in the polls, I believe that in terms of symbolism they can bolster the party's image. I'm also glad that we are not going to have our convention first (which is a tradtion that the out-of-power party has normally followed) because when we did in 2004 it allowed for the Swift Boat Veterans to trash Kerry in the period between the Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Convention. This is because Kerry accepted public financing that limited him to about $70 million and forced him to limit spending until Bush did the same after the his coronation among the GOP "statesmen."

Orlando isn't a coastal city, it sits right in the middle of Florida. Florida is obviously a crucial swing state and Orlando and the I-4 corridor in general is the swing area of Florida.

I don't think the Republicans will go after the Democrats. The week after starts on Labor Day,
and they won't want to start that weekend. The week after that is already mid-September, which is
awfully late to have it. Good move by Dean.

24. Incumbents going last is tradition, not law

Dean made a great move announcing early a late date for the Democrats. The Republicans can still go last, but with Labor Day being 9/4, they would have to start the convention the week of, (coincidentally) 9/11. Ignoring the signficance of 9/11, it would seem that having the convention
in mid-September would be a minus - the TV networks have already started new shows, and would be even less willing to give up airtime. It will be interesting to see what the GOP does.

It would be irresponsible for the networks to give more airtime to one convention over the other, so they will probably push toward giving less air to both conventions, a goal they've been going after for years anyways.

48. Plus, this was the most blatant Republican-made disaster

in the last decade. Lack of leadership, putting unqualified people in positions of authority, lack of immediate and sincere response. PEOPLE DIED BECAUSE THE ADMINISTRATION SCREWED UP -- Or worse (I believe this was allowed to happen because of the people were poor, Black, and in the only blue section of Louisiana. Because of the Katrina response, Louisiana is now a "Red" state. Why should we allow them to profit from that disaster?

They have used 9/11 constantly and shamefully because of the emotional effect it has on the American people. We need to do the same with Katrina. Once we win, we are the Party that will make sure that those who died and suffered will at least not have suffered and died in vain.

Just one clarification - Detroit's status on requesting an invitation is unknown. (I don't

45. I've been saying New Orleans WAY before Katrina...

I think it was and is the perfect place for the Democratic National Convention. New Orleans, and Louisiana in general, comes across to me as the "bluest" red Southern state, and we really need to reach out to the Southern voters who'll vote for "family values" before their own interest. I think we can patch up the Superdome before 2008, though I'm not familiar with the status regarding the cleanup of that venue.

Of the choices presented, however, I'd pick Denver or Orlando before Detroit (again, I think we should hold the convention in a red state).

51. Superdome will be back in business this fall

The NFL has announced that the Saints will be playing in the Superdome in September, so logistically, it would certainly be ready for a 2008 convention. The Democrats have never had their convention in a dome, but it does provide for extra seating, even if many seats are far away (and with half the dome curtained off). (The GOP has been in domes twice, at the Superdome in '88 and the Houston Astrodome in '92).
