I know there have probably been threads about this already but...I just had to add one more.

I caught a bit of the rerun of their press conference last night on C-Span. What a wonderful group!

They deserve our support!

1. Geez, you think that would be...I don't know....news or something
Can you imagine if that many veterans were running as Repubs? We would never hear the end of the stories on it.

8. And the republicans were recently
saying "oh they're just doing this and abusing their military records and the DCCC is abusing them" blah blah blah. They were trying to make it like the DCCC "coached" them to do what they're doing. Of course they won't actually talk to them themselves. Go Terry Stulce! Http://www.terry2006.com

2. I saw them on C-span, as well! WOW!!!
My heart skipped a beat. They are all incredible. REAL AMERICANS letting their voices be heard!

I was so impressed with how they each articulated their message. No notes. Just straight up and speaking the truth all the way.

This is what our country needs right now!!

We need to get behind them with our support.

3. this is great
(although to be completely accurate, two of the vets listed are repubs and, of course, the list doesn't include incumbents of either party who are vets). But its still fantastic and could really help our chances to take back the House.

unjustified invasion.

Iraq wasn't exactly a figure of speech, or a mere expression of shitwad Bush and Cheney's frustration.

7. Republicans call us weak on defense,
because they are scared and have nothing to run on. There's no substance to the Republican platform. They just enable the corporate takeover of our democracy and nothing more.

Yes, those veterans are Democrats. Only 2 of them are Republican. People who know about war, know that the Republicans are dead wrong.

We must shout this good news everywhere we go. This is our ticket to victory. We have veterans on our side. Jack Murtha is with us. Hell, let's take our country back!

YEARGH!!!

10. I can't agree that being strong on security equates with
advocating military aggression. I will look at each individual candidate, regardless of their military history, and evaluate what their stances are, without assuming anything a priori.

I believe that it is both possible and necessary for our party to be strong on national security. Simply conceding that issue to the Republicans, and consequently allowing them to be the ones who define the very meaning of the term, has been a disastrous path for our party to follow.

The truth is that military adventurism abroad weakens us at home and makes us less secure. We need a party that can articulate that fact with self assurance. I will support the Dems that are able to do that.

34. we are in agreement, and i got the sense that these vets agree with us...
after i first posted in this thread, i had the opportunity to see the "band of brothers" (and 1 sister) holding full court press and I was struck with their sincerity, conviction and committment to set things to rights with the issues concerning the military (which we need to have fixed) and an honest and sincere passion to repair and restore our democracy and constitution - they really care about what's happened to this country under this leadership..

the ages ranged from very young to senior citizen range, and i was thrilled to hear them say the things that said today..

they all spoke about the common needs of our citizens, and by gosh i believe they mean they will do everything in their power to see to it.

so my spirits are a bit uplifted, hope restored.. and i truly wish these great vets all the best and hope everyone of them win their elections.

so they'll going to need a lot of support.. there are a number of them from Texas too.. by the way..

Edited on Thu Feb-09-06 03:41 PM by Beaverhausen
Having veterans in congress can only insure that those who know the horrors of war will be making the decisions.

You should have heard them speaking yesterday. Not a war-monger among them.

28. Those who know war, know that it's a last resort.
The Democratic party has no use for armchair warriors, those are Republicans. In fact, we need to reign in our corporate military industrial complex that Eisenhower warned us about. Any country that spends the lion's share of it's GDP on defense...is not strong on defense. Where the hell is that money going? It definitely isn't going to the troops for armored equipment, or military healthcare, or Veterans Affairs.

Even though I supported the first Persian Gulf war, it shocked the Chinese enough to radically overhaul and modernize their military. And it motivated terrorists to find sneaky and horrible methods of striking at us. So now we've replaced the Soviet Union with China and stateless terrorists. Motherfuckers.

The most effective defense strategy we can pursue is to get the fuck off of foreign oil and let our enemies wonder about how mighty we are that we don't need to prove it. If China doesn't make you nervous, then you're not paying attention. The reason they raise my blood pressure is that nobody knows what they are capable of. And nobody wants to find out because it's probably very horrible, so nobody messes with them, not even our chickenhawk neocons would dare attack the People's Republic. Fuck Taiwan. We removed our ships because we have no fucking clue where the Chinese submarines are. They just up and vanished from sonar! :wtf:

Oh and manufacturing. We definitely don't want China doing all our manufacturing.

31. I have similar thoughts to those expressed in this thread.
I posted this elsewhere:

My position is "the more ex-military running, the better."and here is why:
The administration got us into a war we never should have entered in the first place.

They have failed horribly on many fronts, most egregiously with the treatment of soldiers and Marines themselves. And they don't seem to care. they change nothing, but let the misery continue. They never served in the military, they've never seen war. If they had, and were they sane, they would care. We would not be there at all.

Anyone who has seen war and maintained their sanity has every right to run if qualified. The passion against using the military foolishly will be hard won in an ex-soldier.

They have seen human suffering on a scale that we may only read of in books. They themselves suffered. The compassion and sacrifice for other human beings is forged deep and strong.

And if it isn't, if the candidate is not qualified, the voters will find that out on their own--that is, if they themselves care.

& are not to be confused with the brand x republicans that call themselves Republicans and have been tormenting us for the last 5 years. I don't think Eisenhower would have touched this bunch with a 10 foot pole.

32. Eisenhower actually warned us against them.
The "Military-Industrial Complex" Speech, his last speech as president.

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."

broadcast on C-Span - I wish them all well - i like their promise and committment to steer the course of our country out of shallow waters - to defend and uphold the principles of our constitution, and to work on behalf of the PEOPLE and turn their backs on K street.

I truly wish them all well..

on edit: as well as their committment to fully restore Veterans benefits, to make sure decisions of war are taken with the seriousness such calls need to be regarded, and to make sure that our military is not only well equipped but also well prepared and properly respected.

It was a wonderful feeling of hope. I think of Vietnam, and how it really was the PEOPLE that helped to stop the war.

I believe the same will be true, in ridding this country of the greedy, powerful, corrupt warmongers we currently have in congress.

21. It is VERY important to note this about VETPAC-dot-ORG ......
They say right up front there are politically non-partisan. They, for sure, have an agenda. They're very clear about that. But they align the organization with neither Democrats nor Republicans. They only align themselves with vets and issues of interest to veterans.

The fact that only two of the 55 are Republicans ought to tell even a 'moran' a thing or three about which party the vets involved in this see as better positioned to serve the needs of vets and meet issues of concern to vets.

And, while they focus first on things like the VA, they also espouse a strong economy, a lower deficit, a more inclusive, less bellicose foreign policy, and many things we Dems hold dear.

Republicans are the party for veterans ...... this veteran says BULLSHIT. Been there, done that. I left the Republican party years and years ago. They're just fucking liars who use vets for their own personal and political power.

I stand with all these guys.

the man who said he was putting KKKRove on notice that anytime he attacks ONE of the band of brothers, he would be attacking ALL of them and face their wrath. (paraphrased, but close) and they ALL would help that one fight back.:) This is going to be a GREAT election!

Here's an inspiring example:

"Tammy left the service by way of Walter Reed hospital, where she woke up without her legs 10 days after a rocket-propelled grenade exploded in her lap as she flew her helicopter. She spent the next year not only healing her own wounds, but fighting to help her fellow soldiers. She saw first-hand the young veterans who were falling through the cracks of an unprepared health care system, and championed their cause to Congress, earning admiration from both sides of the aisle.

Now Tammy Duckworth is running for Congress as a Democrat in Illinois' 6th Congressional district. As our country faces the many challenges we have, both at home and abroad, we need leaders like Tammy Duckworth on Capitol Hill fighting for what is right."
