mAnn Coulter coming to IU bloomington |
|
Hey guys and gals of DU. I am at a crossroads here and want to know some of your opinions. Coulter is coming to Indiana University soon and the whole town is in an uproar because it is the only liberal hot spot in Indiana and Coulter is evil. Some are calling for protests because she "preaches morally reprehensible things" aka shit and some others say we should welcome her because she is the reason that most people will swing to the democratic side since they will see what the republican's represent..."the true face of american conservatism: hateful, bigoted, greedy, deceitful unprincipled." (this is quoted from someone who was republican and then changed when she encountered pundits and idiots like Coulter) What do you think?

1. and her speaking fee is how much??? Keep her out if you can. |

IMHO, of course. Seems like we've had entirely too much of her kind of talk already.

have been screaming for someone like her to come. We have had Al Sharpton and others like him come for awhile. i guess we have to give them voice, but give me a break our speakers aren't bigots like Coulter.

Why not someone like Rich Lowry, who is not a total nutwad. I imagine Coulter is little hard up for work these days. all these college cons are throwing her a bone....

5. I think it's insane that a reputable institution of higher learning |
|
would pay money for someone with clearly fascist views to spout off. This is not a free speech issue, it's one of judgement about what sort of speech is of a quality that a university should provide it with a forum.
Unfortunately, I do not think that many people will swing to our side because of her. I think that giving her the opportunity to speak in mainstream venues simply makes her views look like they're legitimate and mainstream, and further contributes to the RW climate in this country. The person that you quote is obviously a thinking person, and is therefore not representative of Americans as a whole, unfortunately.
I think this descision should be protested. People should dig up some of the outrageous things she's said and ask the university if those are really views that they want represented on their campus. She did say about the Oklahoma City terrorist attack that her only regret was that it didn't happen at the NYT building. That makes her pro-terrorist in my book. Ask them if they would be willing to have a speaker who defended Al Quaeda.
I think that people who make donations to these institutions should consider very publicly shutting off the spigot as a response to this sort of thing.
My dad used to teach physics there by the way.

I agree with you totally. I think people are getting ready to protest, i just need to find out who is organizing it and where.

9. Tell them that they ought to be able to find conservative speakers |
|
who don't defend terrorism, or advocate throwing law abiding American citizens into prison camps. Tell them that you do not think that these views are representative of legitimate conservative thought, or that they are acceptable opinions for a university to promote. I wonder if there are any principled Republicans that you could enlist in this (is there any such thing as a principled Republican anymore?). Tell them that you don't have a problem with conservative view being represented, but that there must be some conservatives around that can present their views without advocating the annihilation of those holding opposing views.
Sorry that I can't seem to let go of this, but I get REALLY bothered by universities bringing in out and out fascists out of some misguided notion of "fairness" or promoting "free speech". I'm just disgusted and horrified that our society no longer seems able to see a distinction between promoting a diversity of viewpoints and promoting fascism. :grr:
I really think that people need to begin protesting with their pocketbooks as well. That's really the only language these big institutions are going to understand.
