Our President loves an old fashioned game of bait and switch.

Here's an example: during his State of the Union address last week, he announced plans to cut America's foreign oil imports by 75 percent in 20 years. Less than 24 hours later, his energy secretary took those words back -- and said the President's numbers were "purely an example."

If only that were the worst example. From healthcare to the environment, education to security, the President continues to leave Americans hanging on promises he never plans to keep. This week, President Bush is playing that game again with the federal budget -- and holding state governors, many of them facing huge education and healthcare crises, hostage.

Stand up with Democratic Governors to demand answers from the White House.

In a few weeks, governors from all 50 states head to Washington for their annual meeting. At last year's National Governors' Association conference, we tried to get answers from the President. But the White House pushed back, ruling out the customary question-and-answer period and telling governors they should submit their questions in advance.

How can Mr. Bush, a former governor, refuse to have candid conversations with a roomful of governors? He did it -- and he'll do it again, unless you help.

President Bush promised last week to make education a priority. The very next day, his party passed a bill cutting $11.9 billion in student loans.

He promised to address our healthcare crisis. Then he proposed a budget that slashes Medicare by $36 billion -- on top of more than $6 billion in cuts he made this year.

The list goes on and on ...

Governors of both parties know this pattern. They deal with problems created in Washington every day: mine safety, underfunding of schools, slashed spending for local police, and on and on. The President needs to quit ducking reality and give Americans honest answers.
