My name is Carl Sheeler and I want to be your next US Senator in RI
I'm a 45 year old, father of five whose a Marine veteran, business owner, finance professor, and Democratic political outsider who is so freakin' tired of the soft leadership that has eroded my family's hope for the American Dream. I'm fed up with the field of "me too" candidates who poll test every response and can't see that solid leadership begins with connecting with and genuinely representing everyday Americans, not special interests. That's why it's called public service.

My modest beginnings taught me that when we're on the equivalent of the economic and social Titanic, that empty promises don't mean squat without experience and conviction to jump in and save those who are below the water line. That's the underrepresented.

These are the tens of thousands of families whose lives are disrupted in ways I personally know because of the War built on lies and greed. So we need to declare victory and reunite these troops who have done more than their duty with their families. We need to fund our education and health care with the monies diverted to this war. We need to roll back the tax cuts benefiting wealth income for the majority of individuals earning $250,000 or more annually; whether it is estate, dividend, capital gains or income taxes. We need to make large corporations pay their fair share. We are talking hundreds of billions of dollars annually here.

If we want to remain an economic superpower we need to put democracy before capitalism, which means big business, their lobbyists and those entrenched with them need to be given the boot as unpatriotic leeches. Our government is of, by and for the people, which means our government needs to invest in the kind of industries that will create stronger infrastructure in our communities. This means improved funding of small businesses locally and alternative energy and biotechnologies nationally. The availability of some of the brightest and best is right here in the US in business and academia, so let's not talk about energy independence, let's invest in it. Our future, while watching China, India and the EU depends upon it. Yes, and we do need domestic security, which means investment in first responders like police, fire and rescue.

Finally, I am fed up with the discriminatory practices of our government that singles out peoples sexual orientation, reproductive rights or ethnic ancestry to create political wedge issues that does anything but bring us together to address real kitchen table issues. The equality of all our citizens must be diligently advocated for and protected by our elected officials, if for no other reason then it's the moral thing to do. I an think of no more recent reason than the threat of overturning Roe v. Wade and the threat of deporting millions of undocumented immigrants living peacefully and productively in the US. These issues and their solutions are non-negotiable and I will expose any elected official on either side of the aisle that compromises on these inalienable rights of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

I'm not taking any crap from the GOP, their media machine. Chafee's a nice guy, but it's time to send him home and hire elected officials who are in touch with our issues, say what they mean and do what they say. This means not sitting on my hands when Alito was nominated, but showing him to be the executive power enabler he has been. This means send Jack Abramoff to Abu Ghraib until he tells the American public what we already know... that Bush stole the election in 2000 and likely in 2004 and he has helped his elite friends rape the American public of our rights and finances and putting the burden on our families and that of our kids and their kids.

This is why I am running and want to see the whole lot of these folks impeached. I hope you will tell me how I can help you and US Representative John Conyers (D-MI) in his impeachment proceedings. Please share your thoughts on my Be Patriotic Impeach Bush US Senate campaign. I promise to regularly respond to your comments and thoughts. We can't do this without each other and we really do need to take back our Congress in 2006. We can blend the best parts of Paul Wellstone and Dean and kick some GOP ass. I'm on the progressive side. I'm on your side. We can do it. We just need to do it together. Lets start today. Right now!

I'm from the dinkiest state with the longest name as well : The State of Rhode Island & Providence Plantations. I always say that we were corrupt long before it became nationally trendy.

I like what you've written.

In truth the with the power of the Dem Machinery in this state and the kind of support Brown and Whitehouse are getting I wonder if it might be wiser to run as an Independant as so many are so entirely fed up with both parties. The primary is likely to be really nasty and it might just enable you to stay above the fray.

Hope you're not offended by this suggestion. It was the very first thought that crossed my mind when I saw your post.

I wish you great luck with your pursuit and agree with you on all of your points.

on edit- you may want to post this in the RI state forum as well to garner more local support.
PM me if you are not yet able to access it and I'll post it for you.

I hope you all agree that an Independent voice does not have to mean no party affiliation. We need to fix the system and the people who corrupt it.

Be well and thanks for your support.

17. LOL I'd love to see a 12 party system
It's so sad that we, in what was once the land of the lively discussion are led to believe that there are only two points of view. Divide and conquer is an effective ruse ages old.

It's my understanding that Canada even has a "pot party" and a "sex party." Not sure whether their respective platforms are for more or less of either one.

Yeah the whole damned system needs the wicked overhaul. I like the way in which you are not mincing your words. That's totally refreshing in these days of talking points and BS spin.

I'll be happy to post it for you. Since that forum is sort of a yawn festival it'll stay high on the page for weeks if not months.

I'm just spiritually and practically fed up with intractable dualism is all.

47. I said it was just the first thought that entered my mind upon reading.
I live in this state and I know the players involved is all.
Brown is leading supposedly but is clueless about the insecurity of our voting tabulation systems with the optical scans. Whitehouse really whip smart.

I already forwarded his message to some heavy hitters.

Knock it off with the circular firing squad okay?

I just think we need more that two parties to represent this land of diversity is all.

If any prominent Dems were exposing the repeated and blatant election fraud I might feel differently but I doubt it . Conyers is an ace but is ignored by the media. They continually put Biden and Lieberman up.

I just thought it might to be wiser to stay out of what will be a particularly heated primary.

Plenty of leaders have switched parties (Reagan Bloomberg & Jeffords etc.)

It was a suggested "strategery" is all. So there.

Chill, don't want to be part of a so called "firing squad," and I never take my own posts too seriously, so you shouldn't either.

Hell, I'd love choice too, in a perfect world, but keep in mind Nazi Germany had several choices in the election that brought Hitler to power initially. Choice in election situations is not all it's cracked up to be - the fascists always stand together. Also note that Republicans are going to get 40% minimum no matter how many parties we have on the ballot.

Peace

Stella,

Please take no offense. If this was not a federal race or if I had significantly more political history running as an independent is always an option, but when votes count for getting RI'ers their share, being an independent has less clout at least for now.

I'd be willing to bet, Chafee's camp may be considering this option.

We'll see.

15. Oh MAN! Welcome to DU!
I hope this is really you!

We are WITH YOU ALL THE WAY! Unfortunately, I'm in California, otherwise I'd vote for you eagerly. However, I will be just as eagerly following your campaign!

Please do check in here from time to time, if you HAVE the time. LOTS of good ideas here, and deviously delicious ways of expressing them. People here are passionate, and unlike too much of America, WE'VE been staying awake and alert, and paying attention. There are many more here who started off asleep or otherwise disengaged who snapped to it awhile ago, and have been paying attention ever since.

I live in Los Angeles - the "ground zero" for the latest purported terrorist strike from which our savior bushie-boy has "protected" us (yeah, SUUUUUUUUURE). You know, the one he just remembered - that happened in 2002, but somehow only now got around to telling us about. Concerning a highrise downtown building here whose very name he got wrong. And as a resident of this presumably targeted city, I'm just supposed to take his word for it and give him the benefit of the doubt. Yeah, that and a dime will get you six minutes on a parking meter here. My immediate reaction was one of suspicion. I've reached the point where I can't even take "the pResident's" word for it. I just know better. I've come to regard ANYTHING that comes out of his smirking, disingenuous mouth a LIE.

It seems to me that Americans like a fighter, an underdog, someone who'll stand up and say what he believes. Even if they disagree.

Howard Dean has told this story about winning a convert in some gawdawful corner of the Sunbelt - an avowed republi-CON (well, maybe in her case, it should be referred to as Republican) who listened to him making a local speech, and came up to him afterwards and said while she didn't share some of his views, she really liked him and would support him because he came at them straight, said what he believed, explained it clearly, and didn't bullshit her. He won her over - from deep inside the enemy camp.

Furthermore, PLEASE remember that the IMPEACHABLE ONE HIMSELF ran around the country in 2004 telling voters "you may not agree with me, but you know where I stand." Take a lesson. People like what they perceive to be "straight-shooters." That "plain-tawkin', good-ol'-boy, aw-shucks, let's-go-have-a-beer" schtick WORKS with people, RESONATES with people, HITS HOME with people. Even if that "gee, I could go have a beer with him" type is a dry drunk in full denial of his still-untreated alcoholism who has no business going out to have any beer anywhere with anybody!

Not only that, but please don't be afraid to take a page from kkkarl rove - who enjoys attacking someone at their strength. Look what the republi-CON machinery had the audacity to try here in true-blue California - aiming for the controls in Sacramento with their ridiculous, incompetent Austrian steroid swine-hound unseating a legitimately-elected DEMOCRATIC governor (with the ultimate aim of turning a staunchly blue state red). Similarly, they took aim at John Kerry at his strength - his war record and his combat decorations (compared to their guy's - um - er - uh - what?) and swiftboated him straight into the has-been bin. Like they also did with Max Cleland, the TRIPLE-AMPUTEE VIETNAM VETERAN - having the gaul to impugne his patriotism and sacrifice for his country for the sake of a frickin' CHICKENHAWK!!! Don't be afraid to attack them at their strength. DON'T be afraid to call them on crying wolf all the time.

And DON'T be afraid to use the "L" word - LIAR. In ALL its derivations: LIED. LYING. LIES. A LIE. HAS BEEN LYING. IS A LIE. WAS A LIE. WILL BE ANOTHER LIE. JUST ANOTHER LIE. LIED TO YOU. STILL LYING TO YOU. Remember - they repeatedly and relentlessly called Clinton a liar - shouted it from every rooftop they could reach, and even dragged him through an impeachment - for a WHOLE LOT LESS. At least when he lied, nobody DIED!!! Or got their legs blown off. Or came home with one arm missing. Or some other dreadful situation. DON'T be afraid to call bush what he is: A LIAR.

Just some thoughts. I do run on, here, sometimes (!). Sorry it's long. But it sure is heartfelt. I wish you luck. And I will be happy to support you. I only have one Senator here on whom I can count, consistently. Dianne Feinstein is little more than a DINO (Democrat In Name Only) - except when she's running for reelection. At least we have Barbara "Backbone" Boxer - and her margin of victory in her reelection campaign was something bush couldn't even begin to buy, bribe, or steal.

Now GO GET 'EM!!!!

And by ALL MEANS, come here when the well runs dry. We'll gladly and eagerly fill it back up again for you.

Edited on Fri Feb-10-06 12:58 PM by calimary
friend Bloggermann at MSNBC... (well, nice thought anyway!), Talking Points Memo, Daily Kos, Americablog, the Huffington Post - just some that come to mind. Isn't there a Conservatives Against Bush site of some sort, too? After all, we need to peel people away from EVERYWHERE, and we shouldn't exclusively preach to the choir - even though that choir does seem to be expanding. How 'bout Democrats.com, PDA (Progressive Democrats of America, Democrats.us (I write a column for them every so often), and the World News Trust that DUer Tace and others here have launched?

You've guided him here? EXCELLENT!!! I've said before, here, that I think DU is WAY more than just a website. It's a full-fledged THINK TANK, dammit! We have EVERYTHING here, from researchers and academics to writers, journalists, really great and gifted thinkers and analysts, veterans, and politicos of many stripes, and well-informed advocates from many different leanings within the Big Democratic Tent. MANY superb ideas and strategies and tactics are kicked around, honed, and refined here - and frankly, SHOULD be used! Heck, it doesn't cost anything, either! I don't know why more people actually running for something don't dip in here from time to time to make use of some of our thinking, discussion, debate, and analysis. I once saw a review of this site in which the poster said there was post-graduate-level debate and discussion here, and the intellect, reasoning and articulation skills I see manifested ALL OVER DU would certainly bear that out. It's a resource that is SO INCREDIBLY valuable, and so little used.

Basically, I'd just encourage your/our friend not to be afraid to call a spade a spade. bush LIED. Okay? That's IT. Pure and simple, and absolutely straight. HE LIED TO YOU. HE LIED TO ME. HE LIED TO US ALL. OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND...

WHY are so many of our "leaders" so afraid to say this?

WHY?

WHY the reluctance? WHY can't ONE of ours just come out and say it? AND say it over and over and over and over and over...

WHY aren't they using TEN SIMPLE WORDS to explain their own failings - in caving to him on such things as the original Patriot Act and the Iraq War Resolution and any other things he's demanded and gotten in the name of terrorism and fearmongering: "...Because I TRUSTED my president, and HE LIED TO ME." Ten words. Would explain a LOT of things sufficiently. And would probably be eminently excusable to voters. Because THEY, TOO, TRUSTED their president and AND HE LIED TO THEM, TOO!!!

It's beyond my understanding, because it just seems so simple, and so clear, and so frickin' obvious! If I were an elected official who'd been had by bush and his juggernaut machinery, that's the first, last, and only thing I'd be saying to save my neck and my job, although I doubt I would have fallen for it, to begin with. After all, Russ Feingold had the guts and the clear-eyed vision and reasoning to see through the bullshit and resist it.

Franky, I suspect this is at the heart of the lament of Democrats all over the country, who complain about our "leaders" being soft, caving, being too nice, being too polite, not wanting to rattle any cages or make any waves. I think this goes straight to the heart of that complaint. Our people don't even have the guts to come straight out and say, quite simply, that this bastard LIED!!! (Well, you don't necessarily have to include the term "bastard" in that when you speak out - that might be a little over the top... :D)

Jimmy Carter, when running for office the first time (SUCCESSFULLY, I might add), said among other things, "I will never lie to you." And it's what America desperately needed to hear and to experience for real, after Nixon. And it worked.

It NEEDS to be said. FLAT OUT. It just needs to be said. I don't care if there's some fear or trepidation about upsetting or offending people. It needs to be said, ANYWAY. I'd bet those same people would be far more offended or upset about being continually lied to, rather than to have it pointed out that some scheming, manipulative liar LIED to them.

bush himself once talked about repeating something over and over and over and over and over ... "to kind of catapult the propaganda." Well, okay then. If that's the game, then let the games begin.

For heaven's sakes, like they say in the Nike commercials, JUST DO IT!

I was contacted by the Scarborough Report on Wednesday then was preempted. We need televised media and we need to be able to say that it was from here that it started. One of you or one of your friends, family or neighbors can bring Impeach Bush to the next level.

He might have blown off Cindy Sheehan and I hope she will help with this campaign, but I will be glad to do a Texas two step on this poor excuse for our nation's leader.

Just watch my back and I'll do the same.

23. Thank you, Carl! This is what I'm sending to my personal email list:
Rhode Island U.S. Senate candidate Carl Sheeler is ready to stop
our "Weapons of Misdirection" (BushCo)

Just last weekend he took out a billboard saying "Be Patriotic,
Impeach Bush" overlaid on the Bill of Rights. www.carlsheeler.com

While we have our own battles to fight in every state, we know that
every Senate seat is precious. There are only 100 of them representing
300 million of us! I hope you'll join in helping to get the word out
about Carl Sheeler's campaign, and perhaps send a couple dollars,
sign the Bring the Troops Home petition, and help bring his message
to Rhode Island voters as well as progressives across the country.

The Right Wing has bungled our foreign policy, trashed our budgets, made
access to health care even harder, outsourced our jobs, failed to respond in
a national emergency, pitted American against American through "divide and
conquer" propaganda, and gives tax breaks to the wealthiest while cutting
funds for our vulnerable kids, elderly, veterans, college students, anyone
and everyone who isn't part of the "investment class."

We can't afford the Right Wingers anymore. November is our chance to elect
true patriots who will effectively challenge the Right Wing's destruction
of our democracy.

Sheeler is a former Marine, father of five, business person,
community activist, and adjunct professor at Bryant University. His
previous campaign experience was as a latecomer in May 2004 when he
ran as an Independent against a four-term Republican state senator,
garnering 41% of the vote. He can win in Rhode Island if he can
bring his message directly to people. Corporate media won't do that.

P.S. Impeachment is not an impossible dream.

Did you know 24 members of Congress are now on record as supporting
a probe that could lead to impeachment or resignation? John Conyers'
H.RES.635 has 23 co-sponsors and the list is growing by the week.

25. My suggestion for your campaign:
Edited on Fri Feb-10-06 12:24 PM by mzmolly
1. CALL BUSH OUT FOR HIS FAILURE TO PROTECT AMERICANS ON 911.

His failure was just that - a "failure" on the part of this administration. Now, he DARES play "the fear card" in order to bolster support?

2. Call AMERICANS out for their FAILURE to recognize WHO was in office on 911. Call Americans and the MSM out for clinging to the false image of Bush as "the great protector." Call out Americans for allowing their civil liberties to be trampled upon in the name of so called "safety." etc. Call Americans out for allowing Bush to pull the wool over our eyes for long enough. Then, empower Americans with a solution to rid us of the albatross sitting in the OO. ;)

Start a dialog to expose the faux protector for the weak/reactionary he is. And, call out the media while your at it, but remember you're gonna need em.

Thanks again Carl, looking forward to having you around.

* As for impeachment read Conyers blog/DU etc and take notes, there are so many avenues to impeachment it's a matter of choosing your road. The Avenue with the most support from Americans now is the "domestic spying" fiasco. :hi:

Yes, he was warned a month prior in his PDB Presidential Daily Briefing that Osama was intending to use aircraft to carry out a terrorist threat and no authorization was given to do anything about it. Well at least Tenet received a medal (CIA Director).

Welcome to DU and know that this former Navy guy won't hold your USMC service against you. :)

I'm not in RI, so I can't vote for you. But I want to follow your race. Anybody who starts out with that billboard is a friend of mine!

Please do contact the Band of Brothers. All but two are runing as Democrats .... the REAL party who has the military's best interests at heart. The REALparty who understands what it means to wage *necessary* war, but also to avoid all war until the last possible moment. And the REAL party who would never wage an adventitious excursion for personal gain.

Come back here often and watch the threads. You could get a whole campaign here ... positions, strategy, even speeches.

33. Squid or Jarhead We're in this together
I am looking for a few good men and women to help me with this campaign. It belongs to you. It's EXACTLY what the founding fathers believed when they drafted "We The People" and "of, for and by the people"

I want a committee of military and military savvy who know that you don't invade without adequate forces or protection or no exit strategy. Much more you don't invade unless you know what leadership is which means having the intelligence to do the right thing, not politically or personally expedient.

We also need committees of women rights and rights of others who are historically underrepresented or exploited.

We need a committee of the young who are being screwed out of a quality education and track for vocational school or college and may be made war fodder if the draft board is activated with their $500 million appropriation.

We need a committee for the elderly who are being screwed by the high fuel prices and gutted medicare and at risk social security.

We need an environment committee who understands the economic and social impact of alternative energy solutions.

We need financial gurus and tech wonks who know how to use the Internet to circumvent the lobbyists and special interests who have corrupted and co-opted our political system. We need to prove if they want a money game that the internet and not the media will control the flow of contributions for the best and not the richest candidates with pedigrees.

Will you help me? I can't do this alone without you.

101. Carl-- I sure wish you luck...
...sounds like you have the right attitude.

If you don't mind some kibitzing from an old party hack (first campaign I worked on was LBJ vs. Goldwater, when my older sibs drafted me to hold a coffin-shaped sign urging MN voters to "BURY Goldwater!" during a St. Paul LBJ rally, and I've been helping Dems get elected ever since) let me tell it like I see it.

Make two groups your main focus: Seniors AND THEIR FAMILIES and servicepeople/vets AND THEIR FAMILIES. By extension, that gets you a huge slice of the folks.

Pick two "messages" for each group: One "get it done NOW" message, and one "assure a better future" message.

For seniors, your "now" message is straightening out the Rx drugs mess. Replace the current "benefits to drug companies" plan with a "benefits to seniors" plan (woa, novel idea!) that empowers Medicare AND state Medicaids & supplementals to negotiate with big pharma and pass the savings on to seniors.

For servicepeople/vets, your "now" message is "Stop losses and stop 'stop loss'." NO MORE weaseling away at combat pay, deployment bonuses, family support, etc., and no dirty lowdown skunkcrap like making wounded soldiers PAY for their transportation to medical bases, etc. Treat servicemembers in an upright, honest manner and that also means no more 'backdoor draft.'

For seniors, your "future" message is "Social Security will NEVER go away, and it will ALWAYS be there as a safety cushion. PERIOD." And you will work to ensure the retirement future of all working Americans, keep corporations from welching on pension fund commitments, keep sleazy Wall Street hacks from victimizing peoples' retirement investments, etc.

For servicepeople/vets, your "future" message is "Preserving veterans' benefits and ensuring health care for the men and women who laid their lives on the line for all of us." Transparency in the VA and no more bureaucratic weasels covering up health problems arising from depleted uranium and other exposure hazards.

Keeping our servicepeople strong keeps our country safe. Keeping our FAMILIES strong keeps our country safe. Families are stronger when our elderly have what they need to stay healthy and independent.

Don't try to address every issue of every population segment and every group. Don't be afraid to say "I don't know as much about that as I'd like, would you like to send me some information?" and hand out your card with the campaign address on it. Don't be afraid to say "Based on what I know, this is how I feel about that," and if new information comes along to change your mind (and it will!) say "I know more now than I did then." Screw the 'flip-flop' meme, it's over. People are now starting to realize that electing dumbjohns isn't necessarily a good idea, no matter how much 'like real folks' they may seem.

Good luck!

encouragingly,
Bright

43. What about paring down waste in the Pentagon?
We could save tens upon tens of billions of dollars by cutting out no-bid contracts, unnecessary weapons programs, recalling troops from other countries around the world where we're not needed anymore (how many Korean troops are in the US? How many Paraguayan troops are in the US? How many German troops are in the US?)

And you're going to have a hard sell to people like my brother-in-law up in Woonsocket. He's as pseudo-Christian as they come. Minds completely closed off to anyone that doesn't praise God in every speech.

48. Waste in Washington More than Pentagon
Troop Strengths in other parts of the world does not always make sense. Sometimes it based upon treaties. But there is a lot of Pentagon fat in the R&D for programs that get mothballed but we pay anyway or ones that don't work or take a priority over our men and women in uniform.

As to those who filter their decisions based upon religious convictions. I am not here to dissuade those who hold their beliefs to think differently. I am simply stating that there is a fine reason why Church and State was clearly delineated in our Constitution.

158. The Pentagon was missing $ 2.3 trillion dollars as of 9/10/2001.
This information was overlooked due to the events of the following day. I would like to see an amount of this magnitude investigated Mr. Sheeler. I do agree there is horrible waste in DC also, but the Pentagon beats them hands down I would wager.

The Pentagon could not account for $2.3 TRILLION dollars as of September 10, 2001. That is $2,300 billion as another DUer pointed out to me once. That is much health care for the returning soldiers, for medicare, Katrina survivors...

Here is the DOD link and the paragraph from the transcript of the speech given by Rumsfeld on the above date:

http://www.defenselink.mil/speeches/2001/s20010910-secdef.html

DOD Acquisition and Logistics Excellence Week Kickoff—Bureaucracy to Battlefield

Remarks as Delivered by Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld, The Pentagon , Monday, September 10, 2001.

"The technology revolution has transformed organizations across the private sector, but not ours, not fully, not yet. We are, as they say, tangled in our anchor chain. Our financial systems are decades old. According to some estimates, we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions. We cannot share information from floor to floor in this building because it's stored on dozens of technological systems that are inaccessible or incompatible."

Welcome to DU Mr. Sheeler! :hi:

Good luck in your run for the Senate. Maybe you will have a chance to ask about this missing $2.3 trillion dollars. I'm sure I read somewhere that it had risen to $3.4 trillion dollars recently.

Do you have a nice doppleganger you could send to Pa.? We need to oust Ricky boy something terrible this year!

In peace and hope,

45. More material for ya, Carl:
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JOE REPUBLICAN!!!

By John Gray, Cincinnati, Ohio

July - 2004

Joe gets up at 6:00am to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot full of good clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards. He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and work as advertised.

All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers’ medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs this day. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; His bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount of its contents because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medicals benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

It’s noon time, Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below market federal student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his life-time.

Joe is home from work, he plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dad’s; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electricity until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification. (Those rural Republicans would still be sitting in the dark!)

He is happy to see his dad who is now retired. His dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to. After his visit with dad he gets back in his car for the ride home.

He turns on a radio talk show, the host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. (He doesn't tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day.) Joe agrees. We don't need those big government liberals ruining our lives. After all, I'm a self made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have.

-----------------

Also - DON'T BE AFRAID TO CONFRONT THE FEAR CARD. PLEASE don't be afraid to hit it smack-on, and tell your campaign crowds and potential voters NOT TO BE AFRAID. Don't hesitate to point out to them, clearly and honestly, that these republi-CONS are trying to SCARE you - so they can bend your will to theirs.

DON'T BE AFRAID to point out all the terror alerts and other diversionary tactics (MORE Whoppers of Mass Distraction) they've pulled to change the subject, and knock you off your guard.

Also, THIS - PLEASE consider it:

PLEASE DON'T BE AFRAID to use the phrase "the Republican-CONTROLLED Senate..." or "Republican-CONTROLLED House..." or "Republican-CONTROLLED Congress." THAT meme HAS TO BE REPEATED until people start babbling it back in their sleep. If you're going to defeat somebody like Chafee, who to many is a RINO (Republican In Name Only) because SOMETIMES he votes decently - you HAVE TO lump him in with the general theme that republi-CONS are BAD. LIARS. CHEATERS. LIARS. THIEVES. LIARS. PIRATES. Oh, and did I forget LIARS? We ALL have to paint republi-CONS in general as being WHAT YOU VOTE AGAINST. If there's an "R", VOTE AGAINST!!! "R" in this case stands for "Reject!" It has to be a blanket-statement. Otherwise Chafee will be able to woo some wavering moderates who think maybe they oughta stick with him. By the time people go vote, we want them THOROUGHLY conditioned to think "BAD" when they see the "R" there. Think "Reject" when you see the "R". It goes for the scandals, the Abramoffs, the reckless abuses of power, the appeasement of the LIAR-in-chief, the RUBBERSTAMPING of all things bush. "R" stands for "Rubberstamp."

BTW - I often refer to our fiends on the other side of the aisle as republi-CONS - because that's all they offer. Nothing but a CON JOB. republi-CONS - republi-CONMEN - republi-CONWOMEN - republi-CON ARTISTS. But that's for us hard-ass choir members. You also have to go after the squeamish voter uncertain about messing with the status quo and turning poor dear Lincoln out of office. Okay. Go a little more gently with those types. But with them, too, you can CERTAINLY STILL USE THE L-WORD in ALL its forms.

Cheers again!

And remember - IMPEACHMENT is MORE than just an option.

It's a NECESSITY to save our country and our Constitution.

It's a public service.

Glad you found DU. That makes at least 3 times you've surprised me as a candidate.

First time was when I got the little postcard you had sent out a couple of months ago. Very impressive, straightforward, and intelligent.

Second time was just last week when I heard about the bill board on thurbers ave (great location) I don't go that far north very often, but great job.

And now here' you are on DU. Impressive.

Well, I can guarantee you at least 4 votes (from my family at least). I hope you do well, although the dark horse moniker is certainly apropos.

Then you're the one that deserves the credit. It means you're a rare breed - primary voter and I am here for you.

The best way to help this campaign is share with family, friends, neighbors and work associates by phone, mail or blog. It is the directness of the campaign that will give us a leg up. Don't trust the media to always be accurate or forthcoming, but as just a source worth considering.

Anyway, the ProJo must have missed your four votes and the other 45,000 households like yours I have been reaching out to by card and letter.

It's a grassroots campaign in the truest sense.

Take care neighbor,

Carl

were those of the Democratic Party. I also commend your work with the Liberal Christians to show the true word. I was blessed to be presented before 2,000 last weekend at the largest Latino Christian Church in New England.

80. DU -- PLEASE READ THIS.
As Carl's de facto Net campaign manager, I have a favor to ask DU:

Can we get his original post spread across the blogosphere this weekend?

He and I are chatting and he keeps running into the delays that we all experience when we first sign up to post to a blog (the screening process).

If some people could get this moved to Kos, others to Arianna, and others to Atrios etc. we can get big Mo running in Carl's favor. As the inaugural DU Senate Candidate it's the least we can do.

In the short time I have known Carl, one thing has struck me...he has all of the qualities we liked about People Powered Howard, and lacks the DLC baggage. In other words, the perfect DU candidate.

Let's band together now so he will be positioned for the primaries. We only need 5 Senate seats to flip. This is one we can actually effect. It is time for the Bushies to feel our wrath directly.

Thanks for reading this,

135. All well and good
But if you really really want to win, you have to do ONE thing and that is to articulate a REAL strategy for ending terrorism. Something pro-active and comprehensive, something that beats the idiotic yet simplistic "fighting them over there".

Good luck guy, I'm away out in Oregon but I'll support you when I can. Oh, and stay away from killing the party's chances in December. Whether you personally win or lose, we will still be better off with Dems in 2006 than what we've got now.

175. There is no quick fix to terrorism, but....
Based on my military training, education and reading there are only to responses to terrorism

Swift and surgical strikes to terrorists and their loved ones using the same element of fear and surprise they apply. I do not advocate this as a first choice, but it can be affected, but not like a lumbering giant. Terrorism is usually born from lost dignity and desperation that is then fueled with zealotry and fanaticism absent of humanity. In desperation there's nothing perceived to be lost. Look at how quickly humanity devolved after Katrina until the public was involved. Look at a state motto of "Live free or die." Not words, but sentiments. If we followed Norway's lead and put 1% of our GDP towards humanitarian assistance with a show of joint UN/Nato/US military teeth to make sure it gets to the intended, the embers that fuel the fire of hatred would die down. It's also much less costly than military action in all the world's hot spots. Unfortuantely, less profitale to some as well. We do need government with a longer term perspective.

Not unlike having a foster child who lashes out after a brief period of apparent stability, some degree of patience is needed to relearn alternative means of addressing issues. This is where much. much better American foreign policy is needed which needs to be built on alliances that are enduring. Our world philosophy tends to reflect the arrogance of strength with the ignorance associated with being a fairly young country lacking the wisdom of centuries of experience. Because the globe is technologically smaller now, the consequences of our missteps become much more severe, such as not fully appeciating the language and cultural barriers and traditions in the Middle East.

It's not a quick fix, but tends to defuse flash points. The alternative are the decades old conflicts such as IRA/England, Israel/Arab Nations, etc.

Sheeler's call for "Blue Fridays" (Sheeler attempts to impeach Bush)

...
The Democratic candidate also asked his fellow supporters to wear blue on Fridays until the "Impeach Bush" proceedings begin and to also organize peaceful rallies, write, make phone calls and display bumper stickers to get the word out...

It's refreshing to see someone get smart and openly come to the internets.
There are many great minds out here in DUland and one can learn a lot, be directed to important information, be ahead of the game with the latest news, and get a good feel for the pulse of the nation.
Just always remember to verify. This place edits itself pretty well, but it is a big and open world.

Perhaps you can use some version of my sig line as a rally call to those of our nation who tend to agree with the Democratic party, but feel disenfranchised, apathetic and/or discouraged.

I like the line by , I believe it's RFK Jr., that states that 80% of Americans are Democrats, but just don't know it.

203. Ok, Ok, I'll be optimistic, I'll be positive. We do need to get fired up.
You're right, we need to kick booty. Thank you for your optimism and for your loyalty and faith in this great nation of ours. That's what leaders are for. You're already doing your job. The very best to you. You've got my support from CA.

213. Leaders are Servants of the People....
but people must become enraged and engaged. The first step is this blog and many others, but tangible action is necessary to win this revolution of the public's hearts and minds. This means the msg must be received, heard and then responded to by action. No more every body l;loves raymond viewing and let the next guy/gal carry the weight. This is the complacency that put us here in the early 90's to begin.

205. Holy cow, Carl. Looks like you're a hit!
Granted, we're among the die-hards here. But if you can fire us up like this, here in this one little venue, think of what you can do throughout a progressive state (as I believe Rhode Island is).

This is great! I'm impressed! Every little bit... every little bit. Every little drop of water - and soon you have an ocean!

215. Now if we can get the rank and file RI Dems to see this....
.... the existing party leadership is entrenched and are more concerned with perpetuating their existence than making sure affiliated and unaffiliated are well represented. This is WHY I'm running. The focus here has to be laser like on folks so they can choose the candidate they're most connected with to represent them in the primary, not being forced fed by a machine or 30 second ad spots that have us mindlessly choose based upon name recognition or media hype. It's a hard, uphill battle. This is EXACTLY why we have to do this together in RI and elsewhere in the US. I want OUR country back now!

218. Here at DU or RI?
Need you both. In my perfect world, we raise the dough for the public awareness and the day after we kick the primary we party for 48 hours until I can't stand. That the power of the people still prevails would be so energizing to us all.

Then we get freakin' serious and take the seat in the general election. Then I can spend time trying to help others who want a better america for all of us, not just some of us.

It's an awesome responsibility, but it's our time and I'm ready to do it!
