DNC responds to Mehlman's attacks on Democrats
WASHINGTON, Feb. 11 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Democratic National Committee Communications Director Karen Finney issued the following statement in response to Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman's divisive partisan attacks on Democrats ability to protect America:

"Ken Mehlman's angry attacks are harmful to America. Using the security of the American people as a political wedge issue is disgraceful," said Spokeswoman Karen Finney. "Democrats will not be lectured to from a Republican party that leaked classified information in a time of war, sent our troops to war without the proper equipment and have left America's ports and borders, chemical and nuclear plants vulnerable to attack some five years after September 11th. As we saw in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, under Republican watch, we are not safer today than we were five years ago, a finding reconfirmed this by the F's and D's this Republican administration received by the 9/11 commission.

"The fact is that it was Democrats who pushed to create a Department of Homeland Security. It was Democrats who pushed to make our airlines safer. It is Democrats who are now working to make sure we close the remaining gaps in our nation's security. It was Democrats who demanded reform of the intelligence community.

"And it is Democrats who are pushing for a foreign policy that honestly deals with the threats of today, and the threats of tomorrow -- like securing the nuclear materials around the world. Republicans in Washington had to be dragged kicking and screaming to our side on all of these issues that protect America. Democrats believe that we must fight the War on Terror, protect our country from attacks and follow the rule of law, not be distracted by unsubstantiated rhetoric."

This is in response to the following comments by Ken Mehlman:

GOP chairman questions Democrats' ability to protect Americans

WASHINGTON - Ken Mehlman, chairman of the Republican National Committee, declared Friday that Democrats who have condemned the Bush administration's controversial eavesdropping program may not be suited to safeguard Americans against terror attacks.

"We do not and we never should question these Democrat leaders' patriotism, but we do question their judgment and we do question their ability to keep the American people safe," he said. "These are people we know love their country, the question is: Can they protect it?"

In a speech to activists gathered at the Conservative Political Action Conference, Mehlman suggested Republicans should make an election-year example out of Democrats who criticize the National Security Agency's domestic surveillance program. He made no mention, though, of a growing number of Republicans in Congress who also have raised concerns about the wiretapping.

"Do Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean really think that when NSA is listening in on terrorists planning attacks on America, they should hang up when those terrorists call their sleeper cells in the United States?" he said, referring to the House minority leader and the Democratic National Committee chairman.

1. Fair enough. Although I would have been willing to look the other way
if Ms. Finney had gone over to Mehlman's office and personally slapped the crap out of him.

No matter how long that process might have taken her.

14. FLDem5, you do whatever you can down in Florida to flip that place
blue. I still think Gore won Florida and was cheated out of it, and out of the presidency.

We need you down there, so do whatever you can!

I went to my first local Pasco Democrats meeting yesterday. I am getting as involved locally this election, as I have nationally.

13. Yep. Only fair. I have to say I appreciate the DNC's strong words.
Mehlman is all crust and no pie. I think Dr. Dean is going to do a little slapping of his own before 2006 is out, too.

7. Yeah, I'd be busy looking the other way, too!
As for Mehlman's comments, ALL DEMOCRATS should keep reminding the Republicans, as well as the American citizenry, that 9/11 happened on THEIR WATCH, not ours.

15. I kind of like the idea that Mehlman is the GOP voice out there now.
He's really a pushover. Can you imagein him trying to debate someone like Nancy Pelosi or Russ Feingold on some talkshow?

It's going to be fun punching Mehlman out when he swiftboats Democratic candidates.

24. Don't forget the ANTXRAX attacks.
They also happened on the Republicans watch.
The USA was attacked with REAL WMDs, and the terrorists responsible for it are still FREE, just like Osama.

The Democrats WON an entire World War in less time than the Republicans have been looking for Osama!

6. I think that was a very good attack.
It seems to lay out the new blueprint that WE are better on ACTUALLY ACTING to secure our country. Not just blustering and beating up on the weakest kid on the block, instead of fighting the bully who stole our lunch.

not to mention, every Democratic response to this "Democrats are unable to keep Americans safe" crap should lead off with a reminder of who was in office on 09.11.01.

19. It indicates his self loathing and hypocrisy
He supports and runs a party that would want him dead if he spoke the reality of his personal life. I think they call that being an Uncle Mary?

20. But how does this turn into MehlWOman? It almost sounds like...
"girlie man". I've never head of the "Uncle Mary" term, but it sounds hostile to women. (As though the worst thing that you could call a man is a woman.)

Karen Finney throws the "angry" meme right back at the Repukes. Go Howard Dean. The DNC is doing its job. I am impressed.

30. I agree.
The road to winning fence-sitters is paved with GOP failures. People are generally dissatisfied but not yet genuinely angry, and they should be.

I posted something on another thread about the need for a genuinely angry response from the DNC and from everyone who loves this nation and its Constitution, yet execrates the current administration:

Hope someone finds it useful.

31. Dayum! I am impressed...
Dare I hope Dems are finally taking the gloves off to hit this administration where it hurts?

The truth is...this administration is WEAK on national security...it's about time our leadership speaks out on this issue.
