I was out of town and could use some advice on
a response. I was visiting another travel forum w/a political section. An Aussie friend posted about the blivet announcement of another bombing in LA thwarted. From what little I had read about his remarks on DU, I snuck in a quick response here:

"FYI, there are those cynical Americans who don't believe this for a second. Me thinks dimson aka Bush is looking for any distractions possible, as his poll numbers are in the toilet and sinking fast. He's pretty quick about bringing up any issue that might further terrorize his base to keep them in line. Many Americans are no longer buying it thankfully. And isn't it odd the mayor of LA knew nothing about this?"

There's an American from Iowa on this forum who knocks down every argument I have on BFEE, and here is his 2 cents. I know he's spouting untruths and he sounds like he's swallowed the terror memes hook, line, and sinker. Any thoughts on a counter attack, or should I just let him slide? Neither of us are going to change our opinions, but he needles me anyway.

Sorry, I can't let this one go by..... Bush's numbers are the highest they have been for over a year. If he wanted to distract or use this why not for the 2004 elections? That would have been a better time to do it. The New York Times has changed it's description of the mayor's response from not knowing anything to
"In Los Angeles, the office of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said that the White House on Wednesday had given them a heads-up about the president's disclosure but said that the mayor was not personally informed. ''I would have expected a direct call from the White House,'' the mayor said at an afternoon news conference." So the mayor's office was informed just no one told him....And why would they tell him when even the most secret things have been leaked to the press? Bush also spoke about this in October but no one seemed to listen.

Without meaning insult, I think no matter what the president says you will disagree with him. Just as I will give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to terrorism.

Further terrorize his base? I think the attacks of 9-11, along with the London bombings, Madrid bombings, U.S.S, Cole, Tanzania Embassy bombings, Kenya embassy bombings, the numerous Bali bombings, Iran's recent statements and a host of other things have given a large number of people an appropriate concern regarding terrorism. Perhaps downplaying this known threat is the reason the Republicans continue to hold all three branches of government? Just another opinion....

1. What a crock.
Bush has lied about so many things, you have to be deaf dumb AND blind to believe a word he utters.

Also, there is no reason to withhold news of a plot disrupted for so long. Unless it is being politicized. :eyes:

2. He should read his own post - the answer is there.
"If he wanted to distract or use this, why not for the 2004 elections?"

Hmmm, because they hadn't dreamed this story up yet?

He answers his own question, but doesn't want to see the obvious answer. If this story were true, why WOULDN'T they have publicized it then, when it mattered, when it might have led to more votes or swyaed a fence-sitter on the issue of national security?

This is like a man accused of murder, who waits until he's convicted and sentenced before disclosing evidence that proves his innocence. WHY WOULD YOU KEEP IT UNDER YOUR HAT?

As for Bush's numbers being the highest they've been in a year -- well, if you want to BRAG about going from 35% favourability to 36%, please feel free to do so ...

a flyswatter.... and he ignored the info of 9/11 and refused to listen to clinton administration, or gather his people together like clinton did, and ignored cia and terrorist group and fbi, and 9/11 happened on his watch, we still havent gotten obl, anthrax happened on his watch and still havent gotten them and he has created more terrorism with his iraq war, why anyone would consider bush serious on protecting our nation has got to be asked, just how balanced they are claiming to be.

iran has sat stewing
hamas won election in palestine
north korea bush is lost

what has this administration done

lost billions of dollars
has done nothing to bring iraq together
has created another islamic govt
and totally is supporting both saudi and pakistan for the oil ignoring hteir role

how can any reasonable person see bush as doing something against terrorist

not to mention creating such a division in this country he doesnt have majority support which weakens him
and he lacks world support that further weakens him

where is this poster seeing anything postive with bush

6. Thanks all. His perception of the poll numbers blew me away, too.
This is one repug's opinion that we're up against, and he's not a dummy, just prefers to be and stay misinformed. I don't get it myself.

LOS ANGELES:
Terrorist says plan
called for encore attacks
By RICHARD WINTON
Los Angeles Times

LOS ANGELES - Al-Qaida had planned to attack Los Angeles' tallest building in the months after Sept. 11, as part of a second wave of strikes that was never carried out, according to a statement by an alleged terrorist that was passed on to the Los Angeles Police Department.
"We were made aware of that information last spring," said John Miller, the LAPD's top anti-terrorism official. "From a public safety standpoint, we took a number of immediate steps to tighten our procedures on notifications of any hijackings in the area."
Miller said city agencies had also implemented evacuation drills at high-rise buildings in the downtown area after police learned of the alleged plot.
Two law enforcement sources said Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the former operations chief for al-Qaida captured last March, reportedly told his interrogators that the Library Tower - now known as the U.S. Bank Tower - was targeted along with Chicago's Sears Tower.
Law enforcement officials, however, caution that Mohammed's statements since his capture have been viewed with a degree of skepticism by U.S. intelligence.

Just as I will give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to terrorism.

He would probably give satan the benefit of the doubt to make sure he got a better spot in hell.

9. You might bring up the daily press conference
Where someone asked Scotty about this plot to use shoe bombs to hijack planes and fly them into buildings. The reporter asked something to the effect of "wouldn't the use of a shoe bomb bring the plane down." Scotty almost immediately ended the news conference. There is a thread around here somewhere on it. Mike Malloy talked about on Friday I think. You might try white rose to find the actual audio. Hope that helps.
