Cheney accidentally shoots fellow hunter in Texas
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot
and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, his
spokeswoman said Sunday.
Harry Whittington, 78, was "alert and doing fine" after Cheney
sprayed Whittington with shotgun pellets on Saturday at the
Armstrong Ranch in south Texas, said property owner Katharine
Armstrong.
Armstrong said Cheney turned to shoot a bird and accidentally
hit Whittington. She said Whittington was taken to Corpus Christi
Memorial Hospital by ambulance.
Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, said the vice president
was with Whittington, a lawyer from Austin, Texas, and his wife at
the hospital on Sunday afternoon.

trip. i have families of quail that come across my property. how anyone would want to shoot a defenseless bird or animal is beyond my comprehension. we also have bunnies -- we feed them 2 sliced apples every day. it's like they've become our pets. they don't even run anymore. when they see us start to throw the apple slices they run toward us. we also keep a large pan of water (not too close to the house because of the coyotes) for the animals to drink.

I don't know the details yet, but usually it means both guys were at fault - the shooter for turning too far left or right to follow a bird, and the guy getting shot for getting up in front of the other hunter.

Big shots and/or their kids who don't hunt often but go to the hunting locations with a lot of birds do this sort of thing. It's caused by lack of gun and hunting safety. If you don't know where your fellow hunters are, you should never shoot.

Gun accidents happen because someone got careless.

I read the really loong thread on this, but I'm kinda hoping more folks will yet chime in with further thoughts on what I believe may become a significant matter.

I figure there is no way in hell that the Bush administration can be anything but furious and frustrated that this "accidental shooting" occurred. I'll bet the reason the release of the news was delayed was because there was a helluva lot of discussion in the inner circle about how to handle the news. Surely they WISHED they could suppress it altogether, but that was impossible, so they chose instead to skip past the time for the Sunday morning news shows and then give out their own version as carefully as they could and hope for the best.

But it will NOT be GOOD FOR THEM -- no way! Think of how ridicule hurts, how it reduces the ridiculed one to something less than worthy of valid consideration forever after! The Neocons know this full well ... they have used the ridicule tactic against their opponents for a long time now, and very effectively.

And THIS event contains elements that take it a long ways beyond being fodder for the ridicule of Dick Cheney, too. The image of Darth being presented that rifle by the NRA will pop up again everywhere ... and the stories about his canned tame-pheasant slaughter (already surfaced here on DU I'm glad to see) ... and another image will form in people's minds, of a 78-year-old man being shot in the face, neck, and chest by the Vice President of the United States....

Oh, I believe this incident will prove to be VERY important as the true horror of it sinks into the collective American psyche -- especially those who have up to now backed this administration. I think this may be the WORST THING they can ever have imagined happening to them right about now.
