Hastert to donate Abramoff funds

A spokesman for Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert’s campaign this week said money given to Hastert’s campaign by lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his clients will be given to charity, and outlined which charities will be receiving the money.

The once-influential Abramoff agreed last month to cooperate with federal prosecutors in an investigation of congressional corruption, after pleading guilty to charges of fraud, tax evasion and conspiracy to bribe public officials.

Congressmen in both parties have made efforts to distance themselves from the Abramoff scandal. Recently, both Republicans and Democrats unveiled lobbying reform plans.

John McGovern, spokesman for the Hastert for Congress campaign, said Tuesday that the campaign and Hastert’s political action committee, Keep Our Majority PAC, has donated $77,500 of Abramoff-linked funds to five charities.

•$25,000 - Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

•$25,000 - Gila River Indian Community Diabetes Resource Center

•$10,000 - Illinois 4-H Foundation

•$10,000 - Boy Scouts of America

•$7,500 - Christian Community Foundation.
